I sympathise what this young man may have gone through, but those innocent civilians have my sympathy more. True, there have been quite a few stabbings over time -- but they are absolutely not common, infact, Japan is very low on murder compared to many G8 countries. In my belief, the only reason why stabbing is popular is because the harsh and demanding Japanese culture tends to seclude people who are 'different'. Take it as revenge, if you will.

I'm Japanese and i've lived in Tokyo all my life, and I have to disagree. True, there have been quite a few stabbings over time -- but they are absolutely not common, infact, Japan is very low on murder compared to many G8 countries. In my belief, the only reason why stabbing is popular is because the harsh and demanding Japanese culture tends to seclude people who are 'different'. Take it as revenge, if you will.
If someone goes to Akihabara with the fear of getting stabbed, I truly pity them.

It's not just started now, though. About 30.000 people commit suicide annually for the past decade. Back in 70s and 80s People who raised their families in the golden era are now retired, and their kids are forced to learn that it's not the same anymore due to the big corporations out sourcing the jobs to the over sea, then bills pilled, get harassed by the corporate criminals (yakuza) for being in deeply debt. I think it's not a trend, it's a typical backlash of a typical capitalism nation.

They love to drop that universal media comment from every time. The more the media makes psychos into heroes, because psychos have ratings for TV viewers, they love love love to pretend, the media is not the source of the problem itself. That is what making a statement is. Fame. Getting on TV. That was explained in depth with Natural Born Killers. Of course it will be more frequent.

It's a conundrum... the public has the right to know what is happening in the world. If incidents such as this were surpressed the public would protest. The media needs to report the crime without glorifying the criminal. But there will always be someone who wants to be famous (infamous).
Prevention is the key issue. Better mental health system to start with. Proper diagnosis and treatment before they reach the point of murder.

You have to remember that people in America are allowed to buy guns. Police have to becareful if a suspect is armed with artilleries where as in Japan people cannot buy guns so the scenarios are not as dangerous like it would be in the US.

About the Washington D.C. thing... more towards the outside of the city the crime isn't that terrible, but Anacostia, in the southeast part of the city, is one of the worst ghettos in the entire country.
I think a few years ago the statistics ran that a person died in Anacostia every day. Not sure how it is now.
