A few good points are made in this video, but you need to think about being a little... Idk... Less of a pompus jerk. I don't blame the dude for blocking you
Philos blocks everyone who criticizes him or his well-worn arguments even the slightest. He's attempting to live in a bubble of self-delusion and project an image that his arguments are infallible. The arguments he uses in his 20 minute waste of time are EXACTLY the same arguments he's been using for YEARS... and a child can see through them. They're full of non sequiturs and bad analogies... and the way he misues Nietzsche to try to make himself sound intelligent should be considered a crime...
When you say "this is so real" I think it cuts out because you burnt yourself with your cigarette. Happens to me all the time when I'm arguing with frustration and contempt against my opponents intellectually bankrupt assertions. Take care. And watch out for those cigarettes. They're like the bullshit that illogical Christians eat every Sunday; fucking addictive.
Yeah, I tried to sit through that one, and no dice. I checked out not too long after "The Dude" from The big Lebowski took the lead actor to the book store. That was plenty for me.
1 and 3 are actions that relate strictly to religious observance and are theologically, not ethically based. The first part of 2 might relate to ethics but when you tack on "accepting the doctrine of faith" as an impetus you have again made it an issue of theology, not ethics. The part of the statement that does relate to ethics can be uttered or performed by believers and non-believers alike.
There is no block to having ethical staements and actions within a theological framework. If there is a God (from the Christian perspective) then praying for your enemies is entirely ethical.
The challenge is deliberately framed on the erroneous presumption that religious people hold that atheists can't be moral or ethical. It is merely a rhetorical sleight of hand. It's akin to asking someone to draw a square circle and then declaring yourself the winner when they can't.
All three are examples of "an action performed". As for 2; anyone can reform their destructive behaviour but only a believer can do so using the acceptance of the doctrine of faith as their impetus.
Hitchins' challenge is a piece of piss. I'll give you three examples which meet it. First here is his challenge; "Name me an ethical statement made or an action performed by a believer that could not have been made or performed by a non-believer."
1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart your mind and your strength
2. Reform your destructive behaviour (gambling, alcoholism, violence, selfishness etc) by accepting the truth of the doctrines of faith.
I'm pretty certain you'll not understand this but here goes; if you are in a philosophical debate of any kind, in order to sucessfully attack your opponents position you must give the presumption of truth to your adversary. You must presume that the philosophy or worldview you are opposing is in fact true, and then debunk it on that basis. Understand? Read it over a couple of times and let it sink in.
I really, really, really tried to watch the entire show. But I couldn't do it... it was too inane... I'd rather listen to my 4 year old nephew explain how the bees at the bottom of the garden make honey, or at least how he thinks they do. But still, thanks Meridian for the insight. Good vid for you as ever.
Why do you watch his videos? Oh Strontium, you are a silly bitch (mind if I call you 'stronty')? I think Meridian is a savage cat! (that's a good thing I'm told!)
His film killed some of my brain cells, though. I've never seen something so badly written since Michael Bay's first remake of Transformers. Philos71's film should've been on "Mystery Science Theater 3000."
I think the moral of the video was "It's ok to break the ten commandments (lying and telling that that was the guy who killed his wife) if you're trying to convert people to Christianity". Like we didn't already know that.
It's funny that more and more theists are defining their own faiths nowadays by pulling apart atheism. I would not at all be surprised if someone told me that some christians think that being christian is to attack others who don't declare themselves as christians themselves.
sausage4mash - I mean't that some theists. (ie evangelical christians) seem to define their own faith, or reaffirm it by attacking the idea of atheism. It's like it gives them some sense of worth or purpose. (also having very little to do with their religion)
I'm in the process of watching the film you described. the jesus like figure first of all he claims isn't jesus, but an angel. even then, why would an angel need glasses to read? but i'm nitpicking here.the angel, jesus, whatever is a bit of an idiot. now i'm at the point were "our hero" kills the fat guy. just like god to influence him to kill the guy. whatever happened to that "thou shalt not kill" bit? turns out he didn't kill the guy, it was just an illusion. I agree. this film is ridiculous
yeah, I think I saw that film. what a joke it was! lame! does anyone have a link to it? I'd like to check it out again to refresh my memory of this awful film. also like you said jesus reading a book WITH glasses? why would god make his son with imperfect eyes? This guy like you said has no clue about atheism. It's merely a lack of belief in a divine being that made the universe. nothing more.I have pretty much been an atheist since I was a kid. oh, make sure you clean out your "ashtray" frosty!
"Disclaimer: I understand not all atheists become non believers due to the same reasons that the protagonist in this story does. This is a fictitious account of a fictitious person's life. Just a movie, folks. Enjoy it, and may it challenge you."
I suppose he wrote this after he got flamed. To that I say, "To interpret how an atheist views the world as if he's making an appeal to emotion ignores all the other valid arguments that he brings forth to the table."
We have a fundie/conspiracy nut troll that comes onto our facebook group and regularly posts walls of text with links to videos from Philos71, as if that dickhead actually had something good to say.
And that video has been around for years...I'm pretty sure that philos71 didn't write it. Thunderf00t and a couple others I'm subscribed to made responses to that years ago. He's just uploading it for whatever stupid reason he shat out of his head.
brilliant. Iike how he use donut anaology. God is a donut.. hollow in the center. WTF? So the argument claims that evil is the absence of good, but if god is good and god is omnipresent, how can there be a lack of god?
Lol. philos' sphincter started acting up, so he decided to send me a message. Here it is:
philos71:
I'm not that important my friend. You're obsessed now. A bit creepy you know. Leave your mother's basement and go get some fresh air. Think about life, go interact with people. What you are doing is unhealthy.
I know that you aren't that important. I don't remember saying that you were. And I have never responded to a video of yours, so as for obsession, well, I would hate to see the word you use to describe your religious affectations. Hate to break it to ya pal, but I've been on my own for the last 16 years. But the "mother's basement" comment just never gets old, does it?
I appreciate your concern for my well being, but fuck off.
You have been of great help. Make sure you keep an eye on the cock-sized red slap mark on the side of your face though. If it turns another color, you should see a doctor.
Calling Philos71 a fuck stick is an insult to fuck sticks every where. I hate hypocrites like him. They act humble and kind in public but when you really get to know them their true colors shine like the light of day.
this guy blocks everyone who posts something that disagrees with his views... kind of a pussy move if you ask me. He blocked me like 6 months ago for calling him out on one of his illogical arguments...
Thanks for addressing him. Philos71 is also a coward. When I called him on trying to justify the Holocaust during a Problem of Evil debate, he blocked me.
Seriously though. Why the fuck would an unbeliever waste their one and only, and thus infinitely more precious, life? "
That's your point of view. Others may not want to live a pointless life. Suicide never makes sense to those of us who appreciate life. Those who do it have their reasons, and one reason that has been given is it's pointlessness if there is no ultimate meaning. .
Saul committed suicide to prevent capture by the enemy, not because life had no meaning. Judas committed suicide pretty much because it had too much meaning, as the ramifications of what he had done sunk home. Not because of meaninglessness, but too much meaning and tragedy.
Do you know what a crisis of faith is? Many theists still believe in god, and yet still feel suicidal as they believe their life has no (objective) meaning. Any meaning derived from god (a mind) is by definition subjective. IF you are talking about objective meaning, happilee.

For one thing, we won't just disappear when we die. Nor will the human race be totally forgotten when the sun expands in a few million years to the size of the orbit of Mars.
Another is that it makes sense of why we are here, why the universe is here and why life exists.
Existing for the sake of existing. What a grand purpose. It's a bit funny the way you talk as if those things were facts instead just wishful thinking.
Why is it everytime you comeback here, the comment ratings are wacked out? Maybe you've got something to share?
God put us here. God created life. It seems kinda obvious that some inteligence is at work, whether you believe in the Christian God or some other force.
The purpose is to be companions with God. To serve him. To be one with him. Sin prevents that. You have a way to wash away your sins, but you refuse to accept Jesus sacrifice for you.
Why did god wait for millions of years meanwhile the earth was teaming with life? Seems like if he was going to place a bunch of life on the planet that he would have created humans around the same time but didn't. Why? Because there is NO god, life was not created by any intelligent design. It evolves. Because you can now look back on the process doesn't mean it has some hand involved in making it work.
"Why did god wait for millions of years meanwhile the earth was teaming with life?"
Maybe he wasn't in a big rush like you are? Maybe he doesn't live by the minutes on a clock. Have you never heard that a thousand years is like a day for God? see II Peter 3:8?
"if he was going to place a bunch of life on the planet that he would have created humans around the same time ..."
Because you wouldn't have done it that way, he wouldn't? Do you fast forward through movies & just watch endings?
I tried to watch the film, and man was it painful. The quote mining of famous philosophers really pissed me off. Here's a Nietzche quote that should've been included: "That which is done out of love is beyond good and evil."
Sounds like a rip off from another christian film, I think it's called an atheist meets Jesus or something (maybe I just made the title up though)... Don't know if I want to watch such BS, philos never had the best arguments...
I really did not like you at first. Thought you came off as pretentious. However, the more of your vids I watched the more I realized that it was your pretentiousness (is that a word) that kind of endeared me to you. Gay sounding I know but true none the less.
I've actually gone through more or less the same process with meridianfrost. Hard to put my finger on why, but I disliked his stuff at first, now I can't wait for more :)
Hmm? What's that sound? Could it be Philos71's new ass hole, freshly ripped by meridianfrost?

why does God need companions or service if God can do anything at will? i never really understood this

"God put us here. God created life."

Kind of an arrogant statement to put in there.Where do you get the information that a "GOD"put us anywhere.

oh this is great :)

I tried to watch the film, and man was it painful. The quote mining of famous philosophers really pissed me off. Here's a Nietzche quote that should've been included: "That which is done out of love is beyond good and evil."

Philos, how do ya like them apples!
lynchmobb2000 2 years ago 2
Sounds like a rip off from another christian film, I think it's called an atheist meets Jesus or something (maybe I just made the title up though)... Don't know if I want to watch such BS, philos never had the best arguments...
Atheistblindchick 2 years ago
I have the same suspicion. I even believe that thunderf00t made a video about it. So philos did a ripoff of a ripoff? Sad.

Wasn't Kent Hovind in that one? I think he was.
kff 2 years ago
If I remember right Hovind is quoted but doesn't actually appear.
I'd check the video but I happen to like my brain solid and not leaking out of my ears.
