...I don't think Hummel did such a good job arranging this...you are supposed to be able to her the various voices and layers...and this is all muddied up...he thought he was composing one of his sonatas...
Mozart's 40th symphony is the most overplayed, hackneyed piece in the classical literature but under Katsaris, it actually sounds fresh and authentic Mozart. My Bravo to this poetic gifted pianist and thanks to the person who posted this U-tube video, I wouldn't have known about this pianist at all.
how i agree with you. my favourite mozart are38, 41 and 30. (being a fan of Sturm und Drang, 25 is not bad either, depsite its overly repetitive pattern.) the pianist's cool, man! he plays magically well.
He sure has a rather voluminous hairdo, sort of reminds of the wigs they used to wear centuries ago in Europe. Gives him a dignified if also somewhat comical retro look. Katsaris is great technically and musically but has a leaning toward festive sounding music.
This man has the ability to get at emotion unlike a million other virtuosi. I wasn't aware what an ineffable technique hehad nor hispoetic bent till recently rediscovering him at youtube. He has it all.Up there with Horowitz ,Bolet. hehas a jazz sensibility and rythmic acuity rarein classical world. his wrists are amazing and so is his tonal variety. No other pianist could make this music( Hummel transcriptions) sound right as he does.
great peformance! i could never imagine a transcription of a symphony to soud exactly like a full orchestra, but mr. katsaris just showed me it is in fact possible; thanks for posting it:)
Don`t you happen to have the other three movements? Or any video of the transcription of the Jupiter Symphony or the piano solo transcriptions of Mozart's piano concertos that J.N. Hummel also did?
maybe you didnt get it? i can see him puting feelings in it... and by the way, we cant say how is right to play - Mozart is dead and perhaps he was playing it in such way too... Its just Katsaris vision of playing - fast but light... i like it.
Your comment made me laugh lol. How can you be so stupid and don´t get the idea? I really liked this, a great technique combined with lots of different colours. Listen again carefully!
First of all... This is Mozart's 40th symphony... not the 49th...
And secondly... can you do it? Because until you can post a video or audio recording of yourself making a better performance, your opinion has absolutely no value whatsoever.
Have a nice day (or night, depending on when you may read this...)

I heartily disagree with your post, demonicadvent. Having the ability to create something- whether it be a performance, a novel, a painting, a movie or a recipe- is not necessarily a qualification for making criticisms and judgments. One might, and often does, know what something ought to sound like, or looks like, or taste like, (afterall, there are no absolutes in art), but may not know how to produce it.
Like anyone can post a better interpretation than this... It is best to take the video quality into consideration, even though it does need to show a more solid melody.
Hi! Please can you send me a copy of the sheet music? I was going to play the Stradal version, but I think this is better in most parts and will certainly flow with greater ease. I will give you my Email address.
The great thing about Katsaris is his commitment to the programming of works that others don't even bother to look at. A pianist who is a million miles from humdrum, thank goodness.
"C.Katsaris: the egocentric pianist". The only figure in History that remembers Him, is Paganini. A pair of good, even virtuosistic, hands but commanded by an egotistic mind. One night Paganini used to enchant His audience with sublime music, but another night He could have simulated the screams of animals like a charlatan.
Two superhomistic egos, Paganini was a Nietzsche's figure ante litteram, Katsaris probably read too much "Ecce Homo" in His youth. He is a victim of His titanic ego, so suffocating even to blind the eyes of weak listeners.
No, it's Homo Erectus is the true greatest living known pianist, not C.Katsaris. What a sad consolation prize to be the best just because Horowitz, Cziffra, Bolet, Richter, Benedetti Michelangeli and many other are already dead. Also Haydn was the best after Bach's and Haendel's deaths and what a poor era it was, just like our time...
A 'super-virtuoso-feather-head with no taste' would hardly have taken the trouble to record all the Beethoven symphonies as transcribed by Liszt, nor would he be just about the only other person on the planet apparently apart from myself to play Busoni's transcription of Wagner's Trauermarsch from Gotterdammerung.
Well, why don't you upload it and share it with the rest of the world since it is so rare...and it's not what or how many difficult things you record, it's HOW you play it.
ps Was that last comment meant for me or not, you should have clicked on "reply"!
Sure, why not two dozen...tell me, what tradition do you mean and what do those 4 have in common? Very little in my view, this one is ONLY a super-virtuoso-feather-head with bad taste.
kewl, hey i can play that on the clarinet. It' really hard when you only have 4 clarinets in the grade 12 school Band. our band teacher timed it and it was about 9 mins long, one of the longest pieces we've played!
great transcription indeed! I'm sorry to say such a thing about this "gigantic pianist" but my cell phone performs this symphony more expressively than he does..
