I have been sailing for over 45 years now and along the way I have owned 6 hobie 16, and at high speed all started out with that hum, as per hobie , if you take a rasp file and put a edge on the following edge of the rudders, it will greatly reduce the hum--- at high speed water will captavate at that edge of the rudders and make hum noise, I did so on all my 16's and hum was gone or all most gone, sharp-in like a dull knife edge, may your sails always be full and sun on your back-mrseabeemike
@darkdoom645 yeh the whole point of the jib on a multi hull is to create a slot between the main and the jib creating lift if you have it to tight in it just stalls out

@Countavery but the hobbie is in hauled in am i right? if the forestay is that loose in hauled in then i wonder how loose the forestay is in a run but thanks for the info, i honestly never knew that about the cat :D
this footage is taken in Kefalos Bay !! Don't ask me what year cuz i have no idea. I just recognize the spot cuz i've been sailing there now for over 9 months in total !!
@appybuddha---- I've sailed for over 45 years now , (sailing 30 ft sloop now) but along the way I have owned 6 hobie 16 and unless you have sailed one, it would be very hard to just tell you just how fast they are , my wife and I had 5 girls and they all sailed my hobie's, I have been clocked at 42 mph by a stinkboat running along side. During the time of my hobie sailing I had pulled a surfboard with one of girls riding , they sail as fast as they can on a reach , try one -mrseabeemike
@ridgeback69z recored speed on a hobie was 44 mph and I'm wondering how many of these boats have you owned, and if your not getting these kind of speeds then maybe it's your sailing skills (LOL), I was clocked by a speed boat while the wind was blowing at 30 mph + and I was told by that boater of the 42 mph, I never had a knot meter on any of my boats and everyone knows, that you can't trust the word of a power boater (LOL) may your sails always be full and the sun on your back-Mrseabeemike
My Hobie-14 hums just like that when I get above 18 knots. Yes, the humming is the boat. Actually, it is the water rushing past the rudder (not the hull).
I had one of the first Hobie 14's back in the early 70's. Sail #8621. And on a broad reach that thing hummed like a 10 penny finishing nail hit with a greasy ball peen hammer!! Pure fun!!!!

@darkdoom645 The jib is loose? They're reaching, main and jib are trimmed somewhat properly. Loose would be luffing, i didnt see that.
Countavery 9 months ago
@Countavery no im not talking about luffing, im talking about the gib's forestay being too long
darkdoom645 9 months ago
@darkdoom645 A cats main is the backstay essentially, the tighter your sheeted in the tighter the forestay.

@darkdoom645 Not even close. Look at the twist in the main on the Hobie.

My track 14 hummed, ppl could hear it from shore - I adjusted my rudder allighment to make it stop
pnjasv 2 years ago
@pnjasv how do you adjust the rudders on a trac 14?
lego720 1 year ago
@pnjasv not always alignment. more often its the trailing edge of the foils.

thats defiinetly not max speed. i can sail faster in a monohull
superzkid 2 years ago
Superzkid:You'll be planing tho.
Cats can't plane so hull speed is max speed.
Read Frank Bethwaite's book.
Or google him.
Serious tip...

lime green is probably the gayest color u cud hav for a jib, ur haulin ass though mac

how is green gay?? and by calling it gay it just shows how insecure you are in your sexuality
DrummerInTheCity1091 2 years ago
i dont think it was maximum speed
emieldijk 2 years ago
It can't be, they were pointing. Maximum speed is only at a broad reach.

It was the boat making this noise. Sea was flat - wind very strong - hi speed possible.
