  • What an irony - Murray in a musical culture renowned for its virtuosity, finesse and accuracy

  • Very Nice.

  • dance to david murray??

  • So is all this negative diatribe meant to make you look more intelligent than the other person? . . . . . Is the limit of your ability as a human being. . . . to put down another person to make you look better . . man, what kind of animal are we? . . . .Just in enjoy the music, discuss it, analyze it, yeah, debate about it . . . .But the the NEGATIVE out . . . .keep it out of your spirit and you'll live a healthier life . . spiritually, mentally, n physically . . . Peace to everyone . . .

  • Actually Reed nailed it in this video - inadvertently.

"Maybe New York jazz was a mistake."

    rnso5w9 hit it.

Murray's been smart enough to surround himself with real musicians. That's about as far as it goes.

  • david Murray is the best

  • 5'20 -ng la banda-jose luis torres on flute,

    giraldo piloto on drums.

  • Well, you are still confusing quantity with quality. No, I would not think the same of Dizzy, because he STUDIED the Afro Cuban tradition and incorporated it into his own style. Murray does not, and can not, do this but merely uses these groups as a background noise to do his thing, which is quite limited. So no cultural exchange here, just business. Put Murray in, say, Gonzalo Rubalcaba's group and he would struggle through lack of musicianship. You can't say the same of Dizzy.

  • i think you addressed your comment to me in error. i made no comment about quality or quantity.

  • sorry, mistake.

  • M. rnso5w9, on est au moins deux à penser que M. Murray fait n'importe quoi 95% du temps, c'est faux et sans intérêt; son vrai talent, une super carrière.

  • Murray is stunning...

  • Some very ordinary American soloists standing in front of a very talented Cuban band. That great sounding salsa in the middle, recorded at Egrem, has nothing to do with Murray at all. Cultural imperialism is still alive and well, it seems.

  • You're kidding right? Ordinary? Ha. Who wrote the composition and did the arrangement. Who controls the band? You sir are a shallow misguided fool.

  • Use your ears. Murray's shambolic "composition" is a lame brew of cliches and second hand conduction tricks to paper over the cracks. You don't "control a band" by merely standing in front of it and having your name in lights.

The only concise and effective bit of playing is the tumbao by Torres, Piloto et al at 5'; crediting this to Murray is like crediting Miles and Coltrane's solos to Gershwin. And yes, Murray and friends sound ordinary.

  • "crediting this to Murray is like crediting Miles and Coltrane's solos to Gershwin" ...wha....!!? You do understand that all of the runs played by the band is composed. There isn't anything new in music. There's only one's indelible marks and alterations of the existing music. Murray is one of the most recorded musicians in the world. to call his soloing 'ordinary' is to not understand ANYTHING about the continuum of jazz. You would be in the minority with that comment. and conduction 'tricks' ?

  • As to the big band piece, well writing a couple of 'runs' on paper doesn't make you a composer, and Murray often covers up the paucity of his ideas with material generated with 'conduction' signals borrowed from Butch Morris [look it up]....

  • You aren't paying attention. I am writing about the tumbao [look it up] at 5', not the big band clip. At this point there are some Cuban musicians from the band NG La Banda [look them up] improvising on an open groove which has nothing to do with Murray stylistically; it is the kind of diatonic improvising that Cubans can do in their sleep, and this is just them having fun at EGREM in Havana [look it up]..

  • "Murray is one of the most recorded musicians in the world"; yes, along with Elvis, Kenny G and Ethel Merman [look her up]. Quantity does not equal quality. If you are concerned about the continuum of jazz, go find some late Coltrane, say 'Transition', and then put on Murray's inept Coltrane tribute; hey presto, a beginner with a dull sound, poor time and no ideas. Not much of a continuum there.

  • You are NOT correct; Elvis, Kenny G and Ethel Merman are NOT some of the most recorded musicians, not 'best selling' or 'well recognized' stupid.Who would be in the continuum of the avant garde if not Murray? This was a cultural exchange, would you say the same about Dizzy, how about Dolphy's latin recordings. The magic happens on stage. Of course Cubans can do it, that's what they do. Put them in a free Avant Garde setting and they sound robotic, true - seen it. Some don't, most do - sorry.

  • "Who would be in the continuum of the avant garde if not Murray?" - if we only think of saxophonists, how about Peter Brotzmann, David S Ware, Charles Gayle, Sam Rivers etc etc. And I think you will find that Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp, the real deal, are still both going strong. You can only think of Murray because he is the most visible;he has very good press agents and management.

  • David Murray has been my hero since 1978! Wow, who is the 15 yr old on drums?

  • Hugh Ragin, lead trumpet and conducting.
