  • the train tracks appear alongside Interstate 8 at Felicity, which is very close to the state line- way past el centro. railfanning is better up in calipatria and niland. the trains go slower there and there's usually closer access to the ROW.

  • welcome to the Cajon Zone- now get the hell out unless you've got a sack of somethin good.

  • interstate 8 is great- too bad it goes to arizona

  • I drive here all the time. It's very nice indeed :)

  • thanks for the post. I lived in Southern California and Northern California about 20 years ago and found the freeways, although quite busy, in San Diego move much better than LA, Orange county, or the Bay area. They get jammed but only patchy, not gridlocked. The San Diego freeway system seems much newer and capacity is much larger. I-15 commute is much less onerous than say 91, 60, or the San Bernardino fwy, or the Nimitz, Bay Shore, or McArthur freeways up north.

  • One of the main routes I have incorporated into what I call the Migrator route from Jackson, Wyoming to Westmoreland, California, just not too far off I-8, where i have cousins living!! They take this route to the beach every weekend!!

Very nice video!! Hope to get down there soon! Peace and ~Namaste~ , Larre ;)

  • Man, I remember that I-8/805 stack fondly. The 805 traffic's on the 4th level because it cuts through the hills south of I-8. Thanks for posting.

  • Never been on I-8 East of El Centro..Does the UP Railroad parallel the interstate further East?

  • Totally agree. The 8 East out of the OB area is really interesting. Ends right at the end of Nimitz Blvd doesn't it?

I've just got back from my trip to the USA and know San Diego pretty well. This road especially as it links up with the 163 which takes me to where a good friend of mine lives. :O)

  • awesome stretch indeed .. i did drive this while i was there .. certanly unique in tons of aspects .. but who would have thought wat lies eastward appx 70 miles .. wow

  • Watching this video makes me miss San Diego more and more. I miss driving this route whenever I was feeling down. Always made me feel so much better :-)

  • Well, California is certainly awaiting your return. C'mon back!

  • Awesome! how do I miss being in SD :(

  • At 00:50, that's not traffic from the I-5, at the ramp meter. That's traffic from Camino Del Rio. Camino Del Rio takes you to Rosecrans St., and when you on the 8 west, the exit says "Rosecrans, 5 South". The Traffic merging from the I-5 is the lane that makes the taylor street exit lane, 00:57.

  • Another thing is that I'm so used to paying attention to the road and other drivers' actions, that I've never really taken the chance to realize the magnificent scenery that San Diego has.

  • Indeed, this is a very interesting freeway to drive. The I-8 goes right through my neighborhood so I'm very familiar with it...Sea World, Mission Beach, Mission Valley Mall, Hotel Circle, El Cajon, etc. I've even driven this all the way to Phoenix.

P.S. your Annotations are a very interesting addition to your videos. It makes me feel like you're personally guiding me like its a tour. lol

  • Thank you so much for creating this video. I traveled that distance pretty much everyday from the heart of SD back to the La Mesa/El Cajon area. I always used the 8 as much as I could. It's a pretty drive!! I moved to the east coast from SD four months ago. I miss San Diego so much. Your video brought back many many memories. I can't stop watching it.

  • Well hey, I'm glad this video brought back so many good memories! I have several other videos from Greater San Diego up on YouTube as well in HD, including all of Interstate 5, CA 125 and CA 163. Eventually the entire freeway network of San Diego County will be uploaded onto YouTube. Stay tuned...

  • Great video!

  • Thank you! I absolutely love driving Interstate 8 in San Diego.

  • thanks for the video! I think you should add a note about San Diego State University a little past the 15.

by the way, what time of day did you film this? I wonder if I drove by you. lol

  • I'll look into the San Diego State location. I had always wondered where exactly it was located.

    I filmed this, a little bit after 3:15 p.m., I believe?

  • what day did you film this? not sure if I was on the road.

Anyways, around 2:36-2:41, to the right is San Diego State. You can see a big TV thing there near the overpass.

  • This was filmed on a Wednesday. Did you get a chance to check out my first I-5 video as well? It runs from San Ysidro, up to CA 52, right by La Jolla.

  • I might have seen the video, but I'll check it out again

  • lol looks familiar!!!!!

  • That is a neat freeway, I can see why you like it so much.

Love the 805 stack and WTF at 0:55? merging to one lane at a busy interchange? gotta be a relic from the 1960's, I imagine a fair share of fender benders happens there.

  • Jim, there's a lot of bizarre merges all over San Diego. Merging onto 5S from 8W, you have about 6 seconds to merge over into a single lane. It's insane.

    Really nice video!

  • Thank you, Greg! There's a lot more footage to come from San Diego, and California in general, in the future.

  • Watch the power of yt:stretch=16:9 :D

  • Haha

  • nice job.

what's the speed of the main flow of traffic?

i notice that the left lane is full of idiots

  • awesome work .. this one is going on the favs

  • Yeah, definitely one of my favorites, as well. :-)

  • Does this video mean you're officially done with your cross-country trip? I was kinda hoping you'd do at least a few more videos around Miami, the state of Florida, or Albuquerque before you got back. Ah well.....

Great video as usual, Brent. Loved watching this vid in HD, this time around! And I even learned something new that I didn't catch the first time around in the process(the fact that the Green Line trolley runs parallel to I-8).

  • I recorded I-25 and I-40 thru Albuqerque, as well as 8 videos around greater Miami, a few videos around Tampa, I-4 thru Orlando and a couple of videos around Jacksonville. There will also be future Overseas Highway footage, all the way out to Key West. :-)

I'm glad you enjoyed my I-8 video. So much more to come in the future.

  • Nice video of the San Diego metro area, Brent.

  • Hey, thanks! I'll eventually have every freeway from greater San Diego, uploaded onto YouTube.

  • Alright, that's what's up.

  • Wow very nice! Ive been on that freeway before, and its very beautiul, and intresting to see.The roads are crazy though, one wrong turn, and who knows where you will be lol.Anyways this video was really nice to see,and I can't wait to see the upcoming vids like always5*.=)

  • It's certainly not a boring freeway, by any means. There will be a good 2 dozen or so videos from San Diego in the coming future. It's a work in progress (my So Cal place is about 80 miles from downtown San Diego).

  • I know the freeway isn't boring, but the freeways there are crazy!

  • Not as crazy as the stack interchanges in Texas. :-)

  • Awesome video!

San Diego is an interesting city, with it's canyons and topography. Very different from Los Angeles. (Less dense). Love it!

  • You've totally got that right, and certainly less crowded, as you mentioned. LA has really grown on me over the last few years, though...
