Apple Insider reported that the Mac Pro is probably going to be dropped soon due to years of bad sales, and it's not difficult to see why when you start customizing a 12-Core Mac Pro. I think Macs are fine computers on their own, but there are too many myths about the platform. The no-virus argument is untrue, the quality argument is based on units sold (PCs sell way more so obviously they have more reported issues). Apple cleverly uses these.
The reason macs are better is because they have things that middle school gamers dont want. They dont have the best graphics cards and there are not many games for them. But who the fuck plays computer games passed college. With OSX lion there is no need for a disc drive because everything is a download on the app store. S video output is a fucking joke. Mac has a thunderbolt port that streams in 1080p so why would you want s-video. Macs are for gettin shit done! not playing games

Not exactly. In terms of stability and performance, OSX and Windows 7 are neck-and-neck, with OSX suffering from quite a bit of lag that W7 doesn't have a problem with (source: CNET). All file types are NOT supported on Mac, either, given the inherent differences between UNIX and NTFS operating systems. Granted this isn't a gigantic issue, but an issue nonetheless. Both OS's do precisely the same thing, with OSX having difficulties with more strenuous workloads.
@Yeagizzo well i've used windows all my life and never had one problem... i have a win7 tablet and a xp high end gaming pc both without anti-virus both are really fast and relibly. and built well and cost under 300 each. the gaming pc has better graphics than xbox/ps3 and the tablet is better than the ipad in every way. soo fuk steve job and fuck apple...
@kingold786 you do have problems. windows doesnt run without problems. it because there are som many drivers that some of the programs cant run correctly. since apple made both the compute and the os im using, everything is in sync.

Mac customer service is quite good, from what I've witnessed. Even casual questions are answered very well.....although they don't seem to have answers for logic issues, like why Apple charges $750 dollars to upgrade a Mac Pro from 6GB to 16GB of no-name, generic 1333MHz RAM. Ironically though, that is exactly what separates a Mac user from a PC user. 3/4 of PC users have an excellent grasp of technology. Mac users inherently do not, in which case, Mac is a better choice.

I just bought extra ram for 50$ and installed it myself intead of 200$. Well I don't know what you have to do in order to make it work right. Every time I've seen Windows problems, there has always been an irresponsible owner behind it who is downloading this, that and the other without bothering to check. All you need for proper computer use is common sense, not a strong technical background. If you don't know, research. Mac users believe they're safe with a more stable OS, yet they're wrong on both counts. Research still counts.

@Yeagizzo regarding S-video, yes it is outdated, much like this video which was made nearly 4 yrs ago. And if I want to stream 1080p from my laptop, I simply plug in an HDMI cord which comes standard on most laptops these days. No need for all the additional adapters to connect Thunderbolt to all the different peripherals. As far as disc drives, they are becoming obsolete, except for installing software bought from a store maybe.

Now with lion disc drives serve no purpose. HDMI isnt the only thing youll need for adapting. apple uses one port so it takes up less space and less energy. PC's have things on them that will quickly go outdated. S-video was dead 4 years ago. thunderbolt can be used for many things and will be in use for years.

You are also looking at gaming as the sole difference between a Mac and a PC's capabilities. Ever wonder why Apple benchmarks every new Mac against last year's Mac? It's because they're terrified of going up against a PC. Third party comparisons always show the newest Macs being slaughtered in the numbers game. Pit a 12-Core Mac Pro against a 12-Core SR-2 Classified PC on a 60 second Trapcode Particular render, and you'll see what I mean. The Mac Pro will lose, badly.

There are no such things as viruses anymore. It's all been roped under the malware category. Coincidentally, writing malware for a Mac is much easier than it is for a PC. Wrong. Malware and hacking are much, much easier to accomplish on a Mac. The nature of the Mac OS and Apple programs makes it very easy to accomplish the specified task. That's why Apple devices fall first at every Pwn2Own on the first day of the competition.
ROOT access isn't needed to do that sort of thing, my friend. That's what makes Macs such a wide open target. Not everyone is using Safari, but you do bring up an interesting point. Safari had the most vulnerabilities out of any browser in the world.

The Macbook line simply cannot compare, no matter how hard it tries. Your "Costco laptops" aren't a very good example. One can walk into Costco for a TV set and not match the sheer might and quality of a Quattron, too. Bad example on your part. Truth is, Apple's products are mid-range at best.

It depends what you use the system for. If you need a lot of scripting and access to terminal, Mac is better. In Windows, you gotta install linux emulator like Cygwin, which isn't guarantee to work on all the programs, or install a separate Ubuntu-like software. Plus a lot of academic software are only tested on Linux and Mac, and not guarantee to work on Windows. Mac is the better choice if you are in academia.

I DON'T like windows. It's buggy, and has viruses, and sure, it has more apps, but Mac has the same app once then the same app 10 times, and that one works, instead of having to search which one works out of those 10. And windows has more 3D games. Mac has more games in all, but, sure, PC has more games. I can't fight that one. Go play you games on a console that's meant to play games. If you had Alienware computer (Like I do) you would tell that windows runs a lot faster. If I ran mac os x Lion on alienware, I wouldn't tell a difference. Mac doesn't get bogged down like a windows operating system. There is a reason a pc is $350. The keys will stop working,the screen like my friends in 1 month, etc

My mothers broke when it got wet and when she brought it to the apple store they fixed it for free. (omg so expensive). 3. How are macs not upgradeable? I have already changed my graphics card to a Nvidia GeForce GTX 570, my RAM is now 16gb, I upgraded my hard drive to a solid state drive, and you can upgrade the processor if you want.

I have WoW, Starcraft, Bioshock 2, Civilization 5, Minecraft, Final cut Pro which helps with video rendering, portal 2, grand theft auto, and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Don't tell me I can't play games on it. And Mac will only start to get more and more of the games in the future.
@Cyclonexman All those games no one really plays except for WoW and Starcraft. Where's your Call of Duty, or your Battlefield 3? Games will never come to the Mac side simply because only 15% of computer users own a Mac. Maybe is Apple drops their price and sells their OS to other companies such as Dell or Toshiba will they break the 30% or even 50% mark, but at this rate the will never have as many games as a PC.

When I had to replace my pc charger and then eventually battery, it cost me $130. Why would so many people get a mac then if they could just get a pc just as great for 600?

Apple Insider reported that the Mac Pro is probably going to be dropped soon due to years of bad sales, and it's not difficult to see why when you start customizing a 12-Core Mac Pro. I think Macs are fine computers on their own, but there are too many myths about the platform. The no-virus argument is untrue, the quality argument is based on units sold (PCs sell way more so obviously they have more reported issues). Apple cleverly uses these.

Not exactly. In terms of stability and performance, OSX and Windows 7 are neck-and-neck, with OSX suffering from quite a bit of lag that W7 doesn't have a problem with (source: CNET). All file types are NOT supported on Mac, either, given the inherent differences between UNIX and NTFS operating systems. Granted this isn't a gigantic issue, but an issue nonetheless. Both OS's do precisely the same thing, with OSX having difficulties with more strenuous workloads.

Mac customer service is quite good, from what I've witnessed. Even casual questions are answered very well.....although they don't seem to have answers for logic issues, like why Apple charges $750 dollars to upgrade a Mac Pro from 6GB to 16GB of no-name, generic 1333MHz RAM. Ironically though, that is exactly what separates a Mac user from a PC user. 3/4 of PC users have an excellent grasp of technology. Mac users inherently do not, in which case, Mac is a better choice.

@Yeagizzo regarding S-video, yes it is outdated, much like this video which was made nearly 4 yrs ago. And if I want to stream 1080p from my laptop, I simply plug in an HDMI cord which comes standard on most laptops these days. No need for all the additional adapters to connect Thunderbolt to all the different peripherals. As far as disc drives, they are becoming obsolete, except for installing software bought from a store maybe.

It depends what you use the system for. If you need a lot of scripting and access to terminal, Mac is better. In Windows, you gotta install linux emulator like Cygwin, which isn't guarantee to work on all the programs, or install a separate Ubuntu-like software. Plus a lot of academic software are only tested on Linux and Mac, and not guarantee to work on Windows. Mac is the better choice if you are in academia.

But you seem to have the knowledge to build your own computer, but I don't understand why you wouldn't like PC. Apple does a good job of restricting their users to not be able to do things Apple doesn't want them to do.

@CMI1986X64 Exactly. There is no difference. The difference is the operating system that puts less strain on the hardware and has less requirements to run as smoothly as possible. If you had Alienware computer (Like I do) you would tell that windows runs a lot faster. If I ran mac os x Lion on alienware, I wouldn't tell a difference. Mac doesn't get bogged down like a windows operating system. There is a reason a pc is $350. The keys will stop working,the screen like my friends in 1 month, etc

@CMI1986X64 Another real classy Windows boy. Like 99% of people, I didn't get a mac to be "cool". I got it to have a reliable computer for many years. How long have you had a pc before getting a new one? I have had 10 in 7 years. My macbook will last as long as I need it to. Sure, spend an extra 500 dollars that anybody could save in a week or 2 and save a thousand dollars in the long run. Apple must be the smartest company EVER to fool hundreds of millions of people around the world.

@CMI1986X64 A 100 to 1? 5 of the 10 top laptops are macs... Also, almost 1 in 4 personal computers sold are macs. That is rather a lot for a company that sells one model for different types of computers. (iMac for desktop and macbook pro/air for laptop. If you don't like your "only option" for the 17inch mac, then don't get it.

@CMI1986X64 For almost everyone who gets a mac, it runs the average every day task so much faster and easier. Emails, internet, making presentations, and editing photos/video. Sure, PC's are faster and have better specs / less expensive, but if they were really that much slower and were not good computers, the Macbook pro wouldn't be the highest selling computer in the world.

You didn't compare the gpu's and didn't give exact detail of the CPU Type, RAM type, and harddrive speeds :/, I think they are both very good. I don't use a Mac personally, but I would use one if I got it for free.

@Cyclonexman They buy a $600 computer for over $2000 which is not upgradable or fixable so if it breaks you're outta luck thinking that they won't get viruses. Only very few programs that do anything. You buy one because you actually think it's better than a PC.

@superniitendofan64 1. I have parallels on a mac so i can run windows on it also. It runs windows better than all the pcs i have ever owned. 2. My mothers broke when it got wet and when she brought it to the apple store they fixed it for free. (omg so expensive). 3. How are macs not upgradeable? I have already changed my graphics card to a Nvidia GeForce GTX 570, my RAM is now 16gb, I upgraded my hard drive to a solid state drive, and you can upgrade the processor if you want.

@Cyclonexman Parallels runs on a single core of your processor, making it ultra slow. And why the hell would you buy a such a good "gaming" video card for a Mac. You can't game on a Mac, maybe except for WoW or Starcraft 2.

I have WoW, Starcraft, Bioshock 2, Civilization 5, Minecraft, Final cut Pro which helps with video rendering, portal 2, grand theft auto, and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Don't tell me I can't play games on it. And Mac will only start to get more and more of the games in the future.

@Cyclonexman All those games no one really plays except for WoW and Starcraft. Where's your Call of Duty, or your Battlefield 3? Games will never come to the Mac side simply because only 15% of computer users own a Mac. Maybe is Apple drops their price and sells their OS to other companies such as Dell or Toshiba will they break the 30% or even 50% mark, but at this rate the will never have as many games as a PC.

@Bevil031 Can you replace a battery or charger when you buy this 600 dollar pc? A charger is typically 70 bucks mac or pc. Apple replaced it for free. When I had to replace my pc charger and then eventually battery, it cost me $130. Why would so many people get a mac then if they could just get a pc just as great for 600?
