its nothing to do with it being different. loads of bands take a famous tune and make it there own by chilling it out or rocking it up and it sounds great, but this is not one of those moments. the worst part about it isn't his terribly screechy voice, its him saying things like "lets skip all that other crap and get to the chorus" that in my view is very disrespectful.
