Yep, they knocked it down and then left the site empty. Joh was just proving the point that what the majority wanted didnt matter. No sympathy for the rest of the MPs either - the Liberals in particular were too gutless to control the troglodytes in the National party. They havent changed either.
Thankyou for posting this Video. We now live in a Society that has a short memory and anything 'heritage listed' means that... its more than 50 years old.
Im 34. and my old man hated Joh. ive heard about the Bellevue so many times.
The significance of the Bellevue Hotel Demolition was that, as a consequence, the Queensland Government became the first Australian State Government to draw up a Heritage Act that required a range of government and community assessments to be made on a building's significance to the community before it could be demolished or altered. This Act was then the model for all other States which eventually brought in similar legislation.
God, those National Party pollies really were a bunch of bumpkins, weren't they? However did they manage to stay in power for so long? They don't present well at all. But as for the Hotel, I don't particularly see how its demolition became such a significant issue. I mean, aside from the fact that the demolition was hardly on par with the bombing of Dresden or the destruction of Warsaw, it's not as though it was the first historic structure that has been demolished.
@batreeka National Party. All they care about are banana's. They stayed in power because the nationals rigged all the elections which saw Joh get voted in on as little as 20% of the vote. Country areas had more seats. Where now electorates are divided by population. He was basically a dictator in a democratic country. An absolute criminal.
