This has to be my funeral song, i hope its a long long way away though!!!, brilliant, this always makes my hair stand on end. Very emotional song . love it .
Well I still wonder how it was all possible: this kind of music being mainstream. Too good to be true. At least we will always have these treasures. I love almost all 70s Genesis, but these gorgeous "wall of sound choruses" just blow me a away! A similar song is "Evidence of Autumn" it is on the old vinyl edition of "Three Sides Live" and on the second Archive Disc box set.
Unfortunately Genesis had to chance their sound for the 80s - like all 70s acts (many didn't make it back then)......
Absolutely one of the best Genesis songs...ever. This was the album that solidified my love for Genesis. The lyrics had a huge impression on me. I was 20 when this came out and I found strength and encouragement from this song. My other favorite from this album is "Follow You Follow Me" which I had played at my wedding. I wonder if Tony Banks knows the impact of this song and what spurred the lyrics?
Okay - so you uploaded a video of one a track from one of my favorite albums from high school - played on the same turntable I owned back then - and you did it on my birthday? Many thanks! :-)
This just a great song...I don't care if Homer and Jethro did it or after who left...A great song is always a great song. Hope Peter listened to this one...
@thekillingjimmy Unmistakably a Technics 1200, probably a MkII, but that's a guess. Probably the best turntable ever made - used and abused by DJs the world over and they almost never break down - built like battleships! B->
Mind you, JVC and Technics are the same company, I think.
@capcomms Hi-JVC is Japan Victor Co. Technics is owned by Panasonic and is now Defunct. Technics is still their Prof. division but Panasonic took over the Consumer Products.
@capcomms Best turntable I ever had was a basic Acoustic Research with an AudioTechnica $179 cartridge/stylus (big bucks at that time)...a real piece of work. Technics made some great stuff too...best cassette players ever, by a mile. : )

Taking away pops, krackle and surface noise, the good old LP's sound so much better than CD's which still use a standard established by Sony and Phillips back in 1983 - based upon the Nyquist sampling theorem and Fourier analysis, by now proven to be too low. I don't buy CD's anymore. Bring me a higher resolution instead of surround crap, and I will buy them. 'Till then : good luck to recent vinyl music manufacturers.
iTLL SOON BE SNOWING OUT THERE AND SO ..........BETTER THINK A WHILE OR i MAY NEVER THINK AGAIN.......IF THIS WAS THE LAST DAY OF YR LIFE MY FRIEND TELL ME WHAT DO U THINK U WOULD DO THAN??? STAND UP.....LET ME LIVE AGAIN- LET LIFE COME FIND ME WANTING///what a great song!
stand up to the blow .. that fate has struck upon you, make the most of all you still have coming to you - lay down on the ground and let the tears roll from, run into the (somthing) tree's and heaven, finally on your knees,
these words have brought me such great strength when going through the storms of life.... I listen to Collins and Banks and shake my head listening to their "commercial" crap just breaks my heart....but thank God for songs such these....
@goosesquash I would say it is as I have this album also and when you play records over and over they get scratchy and blips etc...this sounds authentic on the player :)
I am so glad they included this song on the "Platinum Collection," otherwise I may have never experienced it. Absolutely beautiful, underrated song. It's right up there with Ripples in my opinion as some of the most beautiful music anyone has ever made.
I heard this live at knebworth when I was 12 , my dad ,me and my sister hitch-hiked from st.albans , hertfordshire , never will forget that wonderful day ...............
Sounds like Mike Rutherford made a bit of an attempt to sound like Steve Hackett???, and then he play's these killer booming Moog Taurus pedal bass chords/notes.
This is one of the best songs ever made! They don't make real music anymor. I wish I could have been my fathers age when he was young and went to Genesis and Pink Floyd concerts!
@Allanlegarthnielsen Maybe, but then you'd be our age too! When I was young,I used to wish I'd been around in the sixties....I guess that's one of the wonderful things about recorded music-that we can hear it exactly as our parents did.But don't wish your youth away-as G.B.S. once said-"Youth is wasted on the young".
Loved this album ever since it came out. Somehow I never heard Tony Banks solo album of this time until a couple months ago. WOW! It's like "and then there were 3 PART 2".. The only thing that could add to this sound is hackett's atmosphere.
I love this album, too. I think it's fantastic that they brought out such a lyrical album after Steve Hackett's departure.
I think it is sad that many Genesis fans cam be a tad dismissive of it...
Personally, I think it's one of their finest albums. I also think that a lot of people who are not Genesis fans would derive a great deal of pleasure, comfort and reasurance from adding this album to their collection...

@Squonk06 Amen! This album along with Wind and Wuthering was their best! I love Steve Hackett and he was a real tradesgy of this band....Too bad Collins ego moved him out...
curtains are drawn ... so , so emotional feeling , all fears go as I look on your face....if this were the last day of your life, my friend.... is a kind of alegory of human being ...too profound with simple words...genial... who can else had not pass for a moment like this...?...love this song , its essential for my life...everyday !
And Then there were Three is a great and not yet the last great album of Genesis, perhaps latier albums are not so amazing ...but I like so much Duke, great sound of a different time and also prog...
I spent one year ...complete ,listening only this album, I had not another of Genesis ...at that time , I enjoyed it like I was listening it for the first time, ....Undertow makes me cry and produce on me an emotion that I cant describe l...yrics, music... all...♥

Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you,
Make the most of all you still have coming to you, [or]
Lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you,
Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on your knees
Let me live again, let life come find me wanting.
Spring must strike again against the shield of winter.
Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me,
Telling me the danger's past, I need not fear the icy blast again.
