I like to imagine dear old dad listening to this while serving in the South Pacific in WWII on a PT boat. He always like the instrumentals. I wonder if it somehow got airplay on armed forces radio out thataway?
It's an incredible recording. Very balanced and dynamic. And obviously it was a benchmark for recording technique at that time.
before i heard xavier cugat's version,i was familiar with the disco/dance version by the ritchie family in 1975(who took their version to #11pop).it wasn't until 1983 when i found the 45 with this on it.i like this one too.and his version was the biggest hit of all the versions came out(#2pop in 1943).
Os americanos acham que é mambo por conta do vídeo do Jon Candy, MR. Mambo, que eles tocam Aquarela do Brasil... Eles são burros, dá um disconto gente!
"Aquarela do Brasil" ("Watercolor of Brazil"), also known in English-speaking countries simply as "Brazil", is one of the most popular Brazilian songs of all time, written by Ary Barroso on a pluvious night in 1939. It was first recorded by Aracy Cortes later that year. This song marked the creation of a new genre, the samba-exaltação (Exaltation Samba)
78s are actually usually made from shellac, not vinyl (which is why they are brittle). Very nice record! I have to get myself a copy. I, too, have a great collection of records....mostly U.S.A. big bands, but I'm starting a Cugat/Molina collection, among others. Such good music....especially on my 1940 Silvertone Radio Recorder! (with modern needle and cartridge, of course...to save the records)
Surprised to see such interest in this vid. Thankyou anoni for the correction. Some may enjoy "Brazil, by The Real Tuesday Weld". It is on youtube. A black and white cartoon with a great rendition of the song. Peace.
I think your friends don't want to see the movie because it deals with bureacratic absurdities that leave the viewer wondering could this really happen? Ever? ...and although the film treats the hero in a nightmarish manner, the viewer is released from the horror of a "1984" reality because there's always that place in the hero's mind (and the viewers) where he can escape pain and agony...a sort of thought anesthesia
Never heard a lousy rendition of this particular piece. I suppose the excellence of the tune makes it impossible to play it any other way than great. My favourite version is that by Enrique Madraguerez, Carmen Cavallaro does a nice job too.
Do You remember when Dinah Shore sang with the Xavier Cugat band 1939-1940. All the popular songs of the time. Yours, When the swallows come back to Capistrano, The Breeze and I
That was the age when some of the best songs were written, great melodies and superb lyrics sung by SINGERS who observed the technique of singing. When I listen to the tuneless crap written nowadays it makes me cringe

How did you prevent scratches from developing on your shellack for the past 60 years grandma or grandpa?
mikemcgee 6 months ago
@mikemcgee Unless the records were overplayed or lived in the trunk of your car for 60 years there's no reason they should be scratched.

That is Brazil's signature rhythm - SAMBA! Watch any of the Carmen Miranda's clips and you will see it performed masterfully.

I did not knew he made records that early... I always have to think at the Terry Gilliam movie when I hear this record...
