i can only assume there is some sort of sensor on the ball, or some way the device picks up the balls and adjusts itself to the balls speed and direction and calculates where it has to be in order to hit the ball in the direction of which it is asked to (the other flying object, or up/down back to itself over and over again)

in tchernobyl the russians tried to use robots to clean the reactor roof from very radioactive pieces, but after a few days they broke down because radioctivity jammed the electronic pieces, so they had to send humans ...
