There is almost nothing in the book that isn't in the game that was confirmed as being true or given Bungies consent, it was just the writers ideas and what they think happened. Basically, its all made up. Bungie members are the only people supposed to create the halo story and the only viable source of information. Honestly, I think everything else is kind of bullshit.

Without the books, there is no Lord Hood, no MAC guns etc. So the books takes a part in Halo. Most of them. Heres some:

theres a reason to why bungie has never showed MC's face, its because they want it so whenever we look at him, we can see ourselves, relate ourselves to him in a sense, that since we have no visual aid for us to picture him, we tend to put ourselves in his place, its what allows us to get so into the game, especially when we're by ourselves, its a way for us to get out of our everyday lives and become heroes, putting a face to him would make it so we wouldn't get the same experience
