i've owned sportbikes (2 ninjas) and a harley davidson, HD gets respect from most everyone and sportbikes are considered a kids bike. I like both, but get noticed when I pull up on my HD, not so much on my zx7. my next bike will be another HD.

They want a solid rumble underneath them and appreciate the image and name Harley Davidson has EARNED for itself. Sportbike riders are the exact same way, except with a younger generation. Have a cold one and chill with eachother.

You have a right to your opinion, although we know it isn't accurate. My husband has a 2000 HD Superglide with 144,000 miles. It's been problem free aside from the normal upkeep. If you don't like them, don't buy them. But, respect other riders choices. We're all in the wind. Get the chip off your shoulder.
I would say that is the exception rather than the norm. and the only "chip" i have on my shoulder is the fact that most HD owners are RUB's or snobs that look at you with disdain if you ride metric. newflash-my "jap crap" can outperform you "american made" bike in 2nd gear.
Look, this conversation is pointless. Yes, your bike may be able to go 160+ mph. Not all of us have the desire to do that. We avg. 20,000 miles a year and ride long distance trips. These bikes do well for us. We had 3 honda's before Harley's. All were good bikes except for a Shadow that leaked oil. Tried all kinds of seals, never did get the thing to quit leaking. You sound like the snob. Ride safe. I'm done.

Harley doesn't lead the way on technology, and never will. They don't make top performance bikes. The don't make low cost bikes. That's not their gig. There really is no point comparing A Harley to a sport bike. It makes more sense to contrast them.
The newer generation harleys compare favorable with BMWs with regards to maintenence(sp?) and longevity. And the VROD is a high performance vehicle similar in function to the cafe racers you probably favor.
i agree, HD reliabitlity issues have sunk to new lows. good for them. the vrod is more of a tweaked cruiser than anything else. designed by porsche no less. but, i don't think it is anywhere near the acceleration, braking, top speed, or cornering of a modern sportbike. it wasn't built to take on sportbikes.
What I meant to say was they're VERY reliable. I had an old BMW R90 and it lasted forever. Had the heads re-done at 90k and got another 90k out of it. I've got a Heritage Softail Classic now and after 25k zero issues. Just do the regular maintenence. I haven't ridden the VROD but looked at some of the specs; higher gear ratio in 1st and 2nd anyway, and higher compression ratio in the cylinders; much quicker off the line it would seem. As to the cornering and braking, can't say.
and i agreed with you. although my wording made it sound like their reliabilty was crap. sorry. since the evo, i beleive, the HD's have slowly lost their questionable builds. ie-no more oil leaks,etc. the vrod does put out some good speed numbers but cruisers weren't made to be nimble. it's rake, trail, and wheelbase are far different than a sporbike.
