Questions to nuclear advocates on this thread: Have not the major designers of new plants obtained cooperation and approval from the NRC on their new safe designs? Why haven't private investors put their money on new nuclear power plants? There's plenty of money out there looking for a good return. Price-Anderson isn't enough government risk management for them?

I've never worked for the NRC or this White House, so I don't really know their details. I'm simply asking nuclear advocates to explain the lack of private, or even French, if you will, investment in new American power plants for the last 3 decades. They receive a significant subsidy in the Price-Anderson Act. Check it out.

I'm 21 years old, and I support nuclear energy. And i'm from a state that does not have any nuclear plants (Kentucky) but I would have them built in my back yard if I could. I was born after TMI and Chernobyl and that has allowed me to look at things objectively and not hysterically. Nuclear is the most safe, clean and affordable baseload carbon free energy in the world and we need more plants to be built. Especially in the US and Kentucky!
France has used nuclear power for many years and they have had no problems.
What makes you young kids think the USA cannot
have the same thing with a much more cleaner environment? Oil is not the solution. Coal is horrid. You cannot build enough dams and windmills to sustain growth.
@ axe863: I expect that they did that so they can quietly get started on plans for a spent fuel reprocessing plant. Because nuclear reprocessing reduces nuclear waste to a fraction and would provide thousands of more jobs. I still want yucca mountain opened, but it would be for what can be for the small amount that cant be recycled.

I propose a very simple solution to the nuclear waste problem, current reactors recycle the waste and further reduce it. In 100-200 years we will have constructed the first space elovator, this will allow us to dispose of the nuclear waste in space, and by then we will have advanced technology, enough to use a lot of solar power.
I know a lot of you college students are young idealists, and you want to participate in something bigger than yourselves and do what is right, I respect that, but I am college student too, and I choose to research the issues before making judgement.
I challenge you to actually research nuclear power from an unbiased perspective. You talk like there are massive nuclear wastelands from nuclear waste, France gets 75% of its power from nuclear fission.

all of these sources cost more to run efficiently than the current system. These renewable resources don't put out enough energy for the growing population. An investment in sustainable nuclear fusion or the conversion of co2 into solid carbon and o2 would be much more feasible solutions that to saturate our growing economy with bullshit energy sources like those proposed.

3) Nuclear energy is the most efficient energy. Clean/dirty coal is also one of the cheapest. Not being oil free, we still need to sustain oil without relying on foreign soil. Off shore drilling is the obvious choice. Money is tight you go with what is cheap/efficient and available.

If your premise is correct about these methods being sustainable, why do you need government to handle it. You're young, bright and energetic. Go start a company in your garage (apple, google, etc.) develop a great product, make billions and then give half of it back to the government. Depends on a number of factors what the output is. I've never been to a nuclear plant, but I have been to a coal and solar plant. I think the solar plant in hinkley put out something like 150 MW, and the coal plants that I have been to varied: 550MW and 2050MW. Depends on how many thermal cycles you have going on at one time, and in particular the # of turbines.

all of these sources cost more to run efficiently than the current system. These renewable resources don't put out enough energy for the growing population. An investment in sustainable nuclear fusion or the conversion of co2 into solid carbon and o2 would be much more feasible solutions that to saturate our growing economy with bullshit energy sources like those proposed.

1) record number of young people did not show up.
2) Of the young Obama voters that did show up, the top 18 reason would not have clean energy.
3) Nuclear energy is the most efficient energy. Clean/dirty coal is also one of the cheapest. Not being oil free, we still need to sustain oil without relying on foreign soil. Off shore drilling is the obvious choice. Money is tight you go with what is cheap/efficient and available.

lol wind and solar energy cannot supply us with enough electricity, and don't forget it is unreliable, costly to build, and in the process of construction creates a lot of pollution, has to be replaced every few years. Right now nuclear is the only option, until better technology is available, which will be a long time from now.

Depends on a number of factors what the output is. I've never been to a nuclear plant, but I have been to a coal and solar plant. I think the solar plant in hinkley put out something like 150 MW, and the coal plants that I have been to varied: 550MW and 2050MW. Depends on how many thermal cycles you have going on at one time, and in particular the # of turbines.

If we drill right now, we'll have our own oil within 20-24 months. We have more reserves than the whole middle east. We the people would charge Exxon, Mobil, etc $50 per barrel as royalties. Compute that...Not only no income taxes, but no cap gains, nothing. Get some Tea Party conservatives into congress, stick spending at $2.6-2.8 Trillion yearly and we'd actually have a nearly $400 billion surplus per year from OUR oil revenues.
Naaa, lets build windmills and run $1.4 T deficits.
