Prison doesn't do anything. It just becomes a hotel for these type of career criminals. Death row is just as costly. Years and years of appeals leave these criminals sitting there, so we'd still be paying for them anyway. And, all people have rights no matter what-this country was founded on that. The Founders of this country fought for liberty of all people who are created equal. Actions of Americans in those days were seen as criminal by the British. Once they created this country, they established certain laws to preserve one's liberty, especially when a criminal: Habeas corpus, 5th Amendment, etc. As a professor of Constitutional Law at the U. of Chicago, I'm sure Obama recognized that, by American creed, all people are endowed with inalienable rights. Whether we like it or not.
I most certainly agree that they are endowed with inalienable rights, before during and after the crime. they have the rights to due process and a fair trial. But when committers of heinous crimes are given too much leway and too much forgiveness for their unnecessary action, it tears this country apart by its social morays and economics. If you really ask them about situations where life and death decisions were being made, most will tell you that even the properly trained people will make mistakes and some will forget their training. It is a human reaction to be scared and it transcends the civilian/soldier labels. The people of my state, if licensed, can carry and they are some of the most law abiding people out there.

Obama stands against the death penalty. It's his belief that the death penalty is in itself a form of injustice. I am anti-death penalty, and if I had the chance to vote in the USA, I'd vote for Obama. Of course, I'm Irish, but I still want to have my say on how stupid this video is.
No. Obama is for the death penalty in some cases. In fact, Illinois law already allows the death penalty in cases of premeditated murder, which would cover many gang killings. He voted against this particular "gang killing" bill because of its partial redundancy and because he felt the bill would place undue emphasis on certain racial and ethnic minorities.
Which doesn't mean the video isn't stupid. It clearly is. It just goes to show that it is hard in the first place to accurately sum up a candidate's stance on a complicated issue in the space of 60 seconds, but it is very easy to misrepresent someone to a public that thrives on sound-bytes and television.

The death penalty isn't a deterrent for crime, nor is an iron fisted military (or has Osama run out of hiding with his tail between his legs when he heard how "victorious" the US has been in Iraq). The death penalty just makes us (the teeming masses) feel mollified. Yes we need to protect the innocent from violence but not with more violence.

The death penalty doesn't work to lower crime, and it definitely doesn't work to lower gang violence.
A gang murderer is hundreds of times more likely to be killed in repercussion by the other gang than be executed by the state. Prisoners on Death Row in Texas have a LONGER life expectancy than gang members in areas with the highest gang violence. These gang members kill other gang members knowing they'll likely be shot in return, why the hell would they care about the Death Penalty?

But they don't lose ALL of their rights, even the Constitution sees that. But what if a jealous wife kills her husband? Or two friends argue about money and shoot it out? Does the same rule apply? Prison doesn't do anything. It just becomes a hotel for these type of career criminals. Death row is just as costly. Years and years of appeals leave these criminals sitting there, so we'd still be paying for them anyway. And, all people have rights no matter what-this country was founded on that. The Founders of this country fought for liberty of all people who are created equal. Actions of Americans in those days were seen as criminal by the British. Once they created this country, they established certain laws to preserve one's liberty, especially when a criminal: Habeas corpus, 5th Amendment, etc. As a professor of Constitutional Law at the U. of Chicago, I'm sure Obama recognized that, by American creed, all people are endowed with inalienable rights. Whether we like it or not.

The only problem is that money talks and the wealthy folks have plenty of it to use as leverage against higher taxes. Actually, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana lowered taxes while increasing ethical behavior in government, increasing education spending, and I believe he addressed health care as well. There are some good leaders out there... it's just that they're few and far between. Obama isn't a good leader. He makes folks feel good because he is a great speaker. He's lacking where it counts.

We trust soldiers and police officers with those decisions every day. If you really ask them about situations where life and death decisions were being made, most will tell you that even the properly trained people will make mistakes and some will forget their training. It is a human reaction to be scared and it transcends the civilian/soldier labels. The people of my state, if licensed, can carry and they are some of the most law abiding people out there.

It was because emboldened criminals KNOW that in Chicago, handguns are banned, and law-abiding citizens are disarmed. McCain, Hillary, and Obama all want to ban guns. Allowing guns to be legal will not help the crime rate, it actually might make it worse. Besides, I don't trust the average civilian to know when to use his or her gun. Guns allow people to make life or death decisions in adrenaline filled moments where it is easy to kill with a weapon that separates you from the blood and the killing.

No. Obama is for the death penalty in some cases. In fact, Illinois law already allows the death penalty in cases of premeditated murder, which would cover many gang killings. He voted against this particular "gang killing" bill because of its partial redundancy and because he felt the bill would place undue emphasis on certain racial and ethnic minorities.

Just so you know, the death penalty doesn't apply to rape. And if it did, it wouldn't just "make the people happy". If you knew anything about anything, you'd know that rape is one of the most heinous crimes one can commit, and that rapists usually just don't do it once, they keep doing it.
