is it legal to use a highbanker in VT NH and Maine? i live in Ma and planning on making a trip up there once its not so cold...would love to run a highbanker....anything on restrictions that you could tell me?
@SmokeyandtheBandit77 I haven't checked to see if there are any changes for 2012. The last I knew, in VT you cannot use any motorized equipment in prospecting for gold. Using a sluice box is by permit only. Out of state cost are $100.00 & you must tell the state the exact location you are using it. Not the brook but the exact gps location. In Maine you may use a high banker of dredge without a permit but land owner permission is required. Join me on facebook. Yankee Gold Prospecting New England
@YankeeGoldProspect just added you....and looks like im skipping the trip to vt haha thats just stupid...what about on the swift in Byron maine? do you need permission there? ive read about some places in NH too but well talk over the facedbook
@SmokeyandtheBandit77 Land owner permission is required in ME but not necessarily written like it is in NH. Byron promotes dredging but that is limited to some areas. You need to check in with the store across from the Coos Canyon Campground. They have a list of land owners that allow dredging. In NH the Twin River campground in allows dredging on there property for a fee. If you are staying at the campground, they will give you a pass while you are there.
@YankeeGoldProspect ok soo if i wanted to just pan or sluice in the river in nh or maine...would that be ok to just go? i dont have a dredge or anything.. if its on someones property i have no problem going to ask if i can thats just good manors but if i have to pay everywhere i go its not very much fun...
Thanks Nuggets to dust. had another good weekend. Found about 2 grams of gold. Some nice chunky stuff. The best stuff is right on the bedrock or trapped in the schist. The Mercury coated gold seems to be more in the over burden.
@SmokeyandtheBandit77 prospect Connecticut , Colbalt Connecticut , there are places where 7 ounces per ton can be had but you have to be careful; the state police will arrest you if they catch you , the state hired a mining company to mine it I know places where there are nuggets that are 3 and 4 ounces each but it's not worth going to jail for
@jhunted7667 I have read that article about the College group finding rich ore ine the old mine. A lot of land owners are generous & will allow you to pan for gold on their property, if you ask. Long as you respect their land. If you tarted finding nice nuggets, it might be wise to give them a %.
@YankeeGoldProspect who do think wrote to the geology department telling him where to look , there are nuggets out there that you would not believe me if I told you , but the state police will throw your ass in jail and take everything away if they catch you , Connecticut stinks unless you own the land then you can do what you want
@jhunted7667 nice ive read about the farmington river...but dont know any specific place but..not really worried about the state police thing..do you have a specific location to the prospect or cobalt area or whichever ones the 7 ounce one...if im gona have to make it quick mise well be in a good area am i right? haha
@SmokeyandtheBandit77 make sure that your NOT on state land , there is a place but people I sent there before came out screaming saying the place is demon possessed , I know I would not go there
@jhunted7667 alright...id check it out if your willin to say the address..im headed to ct this weekend and need to waste some time..propbly wouldnt even do any panning or anythign just check it out...what you told me intrigues me...id like to investigate...if i come out screamin then i will never go back
The mercury is attached to some of the fine gold. Was used by the old miners and lost out of there long Toms back into the creek. It has been in the creeks for a 120 years or so. Still with the gold. Must wash down with storms from bank erosion. Found the 1889 penny there so Dredgers Pre 90's and panner's missed a lot of stuff. They all go behind the big rocks. I was right in the middle of the stream. On bedrock.
@santonucci Mercury is not covered by it's self. It covers clean gold and looks like flakes of silver. I made the mistake, at first, of putting it in with my other gold. I soon discovered more silver flakes. I guess that is why it is aka, quick silver. It spreads to any clean gold and amalgamates to it. There is no way of removing the mercury, other than burning it off. Unfortunately to purchase the proper equipment to do it properly is very expensive.

I am not sure where Shelburn is Steezyskiier. In Vermont most of the creeks & rivers that flow toward the Connecticut River have some gold.

@jhunted7667 Wouldn't it be worth making friends with a land owner & offering them a % to prospect on their property?

Nice haul. What do you do to recover the mercury? Is it leaching into the stream from the environment?
