In case someone hasn't pointed it out yet, it was MLK Sr who was the Republican, Jr never was to my knowledge and like other posters have said, he was often attacked by the republicans. The majority of today's republican party were democrats who switched parties, not the other way around. Guys like Newt Gingrich, Trent Lott, Jesse Helms, Ronald Reagan, Strom Thurmond, etc, they were all Democrats until the Civil Rights Movement, then they switch party affiliations to Republican.

What byron said in 2008 and what is happening now 2011, he hit it right on the head. Obama is facing alot of oposition like he said. It also seem that the congressional vote and senate vote is more important than the presidential vote. It's harder to get the black vote for the congressional and senate vote. The republican won the house now its going to be even harder for obama to get things done.

Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote in his autobiography:

"The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism."

That was his description of the 1964 Republican National Convention. He also referred to the Republican convention as "the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right."

Im so sick of people trying to get blacks to vote for republicans it isnt going to happen. Just like how republicans arent going to change their extremely negative views of black people. Maybe if republicans change they might win more than 10% in elections. But republicans cant keep the animosty directed towards blacks and expect to win a sizeable portion of the black vote. Who cares if MLK was Republican? The faces of Republican and Democrat have flipped so many times throughout history. Hell, the Republican party sure wasn't even the same 10 or 20 years ago. Republican was the party for blacks in the late 1800's and the Democrats supported slavery. Everything in life is a circle. What we need is our own political party, but you can't have that type of political power without economic power, those blacks who have achieved economic power and independence must return to the community. You are still dangerously uninformed if you think MLK was conservative or would be a Republican.This is mass manipulation. Many blacks in the South were Republican due to the power and racism of Southern Democrats. That shifted by the mid 60s but in no way was King ever Republican in ideology or would he be aligned with Republicans of today.

You need to your research about the words, actions and speeches of King to understand his true ideology which was further left than most would imagine.

I'm a Dem because I find that nowadays Dems care more about issues concerning people than Republicans do. Republicans, to me have a one-sided outlook on what our country and countrymen and women is supposed to look like.

I'm pro choice, Republicans are pro life and tend to call pro choicers murderers. I'm for gay marriage, but republicans put restrictions on how and who should love another person, even if they're of the same sex.

Basically, I think Republicans are closed=minded.

Could you please tell me how your offspring would die off if a gay couple gets married? Civil unions between gays isn't different than being a married gay couple. They have the same rights. Well, I am mostly to the right but not a Rep either and I have very strong conservative views. When it comes to marketing themselves, I think any party should consider those who are near or at the bottom. The majority of the people in this country have conservative views, specially when it comes to financial and security issues. But they won't align themselves with Reps cause of the stigma attached to them by the media.

The Great Society which MLK was pushing for and even cut ties with Johnson over, was not even fully executed so for people to continue to blame the Great Society shows that they are lacking in their understanding of complex social issues.

1. He supported the Great Society. As I said, read "The Other America". It called hard-work...google it.

2. He was in favor of Affirmative Action like programs. Research Operation Breadbasket. King once said and I will paraphase, that America has done so much against the negro so he now has to do something special for the negro. He also sighted similar "affirmative action" programs in India.

3. King was against the Vietnam War for two primary reasons, one, he saw it as draining funds that could be used to fight domestic issues. Second, he saw it as another example of American imperialism of non-white countries.

Please do not tell me that it was Dems who started Vietnam because one, America has a history of such wars and two, Republicans have become the extreme war mongers in the last 40 years. King acknowledged this and detested Ronald Reagan.
