In case someone hasn't pointed it out yet, it was MLK Sr who was the Republican, Jr never was to my knowledge and like other posters have said, he was often attacked by the republicans. The majority of today's republican party were democrats who switched parties, not the other way around. Guys like Newt Gingrich, Trent Lott, Jesse Helms, Ronald Reagan, Strom Thurmond, etc, they were all Democrats until the Civil Rights Movement, then they switch party affiliations to Republican.
What byron said in 2008 and what is happening now 2011, he hit it right on the head. Obama is facing alot of oposition like he said. It also seem that the congressional vote and senate vote is more important than the presidential vote. It's harder to get the black vote for the congressional and senate vote. The republican won the house now its going to be even harder for obama to get things done.
Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote in his autobiography:
"The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism."
That was his description of the 1964 Republican National Convention. He also referred to the Republican convention as "the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right."
Im so sick of people trying to get blacks to vote for republicans it isnt going to happen. Just like how republicans arent going to change their extremely negative views of black people. Maybe if republicans change they might win more than 10% in elections. But republicans cant keep the animosty directed towards blacks and expect to win a sizeable portion of the black vote. They cant have it both ways, they have to stop the animosty or consistently lose the black vote.
Who cares if MLK was Republican? The faces of Republican and Democrat have flipped so many times throughout history. Hell, the Republican party sure wasn't even the same 10 or 20 years ago. And need I mention that a Democrat initiated the Af. American Civil Rights Movement? But what difference does that really make? I feel as you felt the need to point something out about MLK that wasn't relevant to his person or message to selfishly justify your own political position.
Wow!!! it's amazing how you feel so passionate about her statement about MLK being a Republican. Is that ever a bad thing to be a Republican if your black???
THIS is my favorite look of you. A true African Goddess! The world worshipped the African Goddess long before the Europeans invaded and changed the dark hued image to a so-called white one.
Republican was the party for blacks in the late 1800's and the Democrats supported slavery. Everything in life is a circle. What we need is our own political party, but you can't have that type of political power without economic power, those blacks who have achieved economic power and independence must return to the community. Black, brown, and red must unite to have more control over our lives by controlling our communities through economics.
Democratic="black", because democrats have a habbit in recent times of giving a f*** about issues within the black community, or that black people widely care about.
Republicans on the other hand, do not reach out to the community...and they really don't care to. They even reminded you all in this year's election...they're "playing to their base". And we all know that this "base" does NOT include us.
The Republican's freed the slaves and the Democrats have only since Mlk's death after which the Democratic Party has seduced Black America back onto the plantation. The Democratic Elite has convinced most black people that they can't make it without their help and guidance, while in fact they just manipulate them for their votes. More Republicans died to free blacks in this country than blacks have died from racial injustice, which has almost always been at the hands of democrats like the KKK.
MLK was much further left than portrayed by popular media and American revisionist history which is why much of his actions, words and speeches have been suppressed.
You are still dangerously uninformed if you think MLK was conservative or would be a Republican. This is mass manipulation. Many blacks in the South were Republican due to the power and racism of Southern Democrats. That shifted by the mid 60s but in no way was King ever Republican in ideology or would he be aligned with Republicans of today.
You need to your research about the words, actions and speeches of King to understand his true ideology which was further left than most would imagine.
Great job Miss Tonya! Flaws and all...it's all good. You did GREAT!
As for the topic. I definitely need to become more versed on it. I don't follow the parties at all. I tend to stick to the platforms; meaning what the parties are offering. I am not glued to either party.
I'm a Dem because I find that nowadays Dems care more about issues concerning people than Republicans do. Republicans, to me have a one-sided outlook on what our country and countrymen and women is supposed to look like.
I'm pro choice, Republicans are pro life and tend to call pro choicers murderers. I'm for gay marriage, but republicans put restrictions on how and who should love another person, even if they're of the same sex.
u have 2 put restrictions on gay marriage.gay equals death and disease. 2 of the same can not produce. if the gay populattion isnt controled then who knows we could die off
It's not about reproducing, wheatbread! It's about loving someone. There are couples who can't reproduce physically, does that mean that their reason for staying together is wrong? Because they enjoy each other's company and love each other UNCONDITIONALLY? I think you're wrong.
gay doesn't = death. Especially when there are heterosexuals in this country who get AIDS every single day from OTHER HETEROSEXUALS! AIDS isn't a gay disease. AIDS doesn't discriminate.
I just asked you a question. If a heterosexual couple can't reproduce, does that mean that their marriage isn't real or the way that they feel about each other should be invalid because they can't reproduce?
HETEROSEXUALS get AIDS also, wheatbread. Didn't you know that or are you still stuck in 1984 when all of the ignorant people were convinced that AIDS is a "GAY DISEASE"?
Being gay (in your eyes) is against everything societally (new word) normal. It's taboo. HOWEVER, if you're not gay, why do you care if someone else is. And what makes you think that YOU or the government needs to CONTROL the personal lives of American citizens , whether gay or straight? And will you PLEASE answer my question. You made that argument about marriage being about procreation, and things but are straight couples marriages doomed if they can't have children?
thats not true i never said it was taboo or any of that. the governments needs to maintain control over a society or it will collapse.i never said marriage was about procreation, marriage is something holy. gay people can not be married thats impossible. it doesnt make any sense. the concept marriage is built on the idea of a union btween man and wmn, its an attempt to restore adam and eve to their ultimate glory
Adam and Eve didn't set the standards for love and fidelity. After all, EVE manipulated Adam into eating an apple from the tree of life (which God expressly told them NOT TO DO) How much love was involved there? Adam and Eve...not a good example of a healthy marriage.
And when you stated that gays shouldn't marry or be together because they can't procreate, you ARE saying that those hetero/straight couples who can't pro create really dont' have a reason to be together.
see u are misinterpreting everything i say nvm.i diodnt say anthing about adam and eve being the medel 4 a healthy relationship or none of that bs ur talking about i ddnt say gays couldnt be together. they can be together in a civil union but NOT a marriage. MARRIGE IS ABOUT COMBINING EVERYTHING THAT A WOMEN IS WITH EVERYTHING THAT A MAN IS, BY DEFINITION ONLY A MAN AND A WOMAN CAN MARRY
"u have 2 put restrictions on gay marriage.gay equals death and disease. 2 of the same can not produce. if the gay populattion isnt controled then who knows we could die off "
Could you please tell me how your offspring would die off if a gay couple gets married? Civil unions between gays isn't different than being a married gay couple. They have the same rights. In fact, respectfully, to those heterosexual couples who can't reproduce have a lot in common with gay couples.
Wheat, I just pulled up a quote that you typed into the comments. If you have nothing against gays why are you saying that the government should put restrictions on gay marriages. In that case should the government also be allowed to tell gays or anyone else who to be in a relationship?
I never said he was a democrat! Just because someone disputes that someone is not Republican does not mean they are a democrat. I am far left but I am no democrat.
In addition, I am basing my statements on King's actual views and words...not his white house affiliates.
I find that most people do not know that King was far left. Our society has done a lot to destroy what he stood for.
Well, I am mostly to the right but not a Rep either and I have very strong conservative views. When it comes to marketing themselves, I think any party should consider those who are near or at the bottom. The majority of the people in this country have conservative views, specially when it comes to financial and security issues. But they won't align themselves with Reps cause of the stigma attached to them by the media.
Now I did not say you said he was a dem. But you implied that was his directional bend. But I that part's neither here or there. Party politics change over time, like one poster said. But that's a small part of the issue. There were and still are a lot of entertainers who voted and are voting Republican, which is not equivalent to racism. James Brown supported Richard Nixon for his term in office.
I disagree. He was gospel minister before entering into political issues, which is still right up his alley. You just don't want to concede to the fact that his ideology was conservative in nature. He spoke of self-reliance, hard work, dedication, persistance, as well as freedom and dignity. Liberalism does not believe poor people have the capacity to care for or advance themselves. Black folks have been hurt by the "great society".
I believe in self-reliance, hard work, dedication and persistence as well as freedom and diginity. Possessing none of the values makes me conservative.
Read "Where Do We Go From Here? by MLK and speeches like "The Other America".
The Great Society which MLK was pushing for and even cut ties with Johnson over, was not even fully executed so for people to continue to blame the Great Society shows that they are lacking in their understanding of complex social issues.
No, I know he wasn't an entertainer. But his views were not far left either. He was very conservative being a preacher of the gospel. Kennedy was a dem but had conservative leanings, at least fiscally. So was Johnson, although he appeared to have been a bit of a racist. It's not the party anyway, it's the ideology that matters.
"It's not the party anyway, it's the ideology that matters. "
So you finally got what I was trying to say before you dragged me in your debate over political party affiliation.
As I said, it is not about political parties, MLK had a far left ideology which most people do not know about because he evolved over time moving further and further to the left.
Most people unfortunately don't know anyhting outside of King in Alabama and at the March on Washington. You are one of these people?
You are late in this conversation and at this point, I am tired of having to quote King because since all of you are conservatives and only conservatives understand hard work and self-reliance, you guys should be doing this work yourself.
Nonetheless, it was a few months ago when many had to surrender that King was in fact far left and many conservatives on these boards were upset about him and his views.
King fought against capitalism, materialism, militarism as well as other issues not simply racism.
Also, most black activists in the 1960s realized that the issues that afflicted opressed people of color was far more complex than our society at large liked to make it. I hardly ever hear anyone discuss the systematic economic deprivation as well as other topics?
Stop trying to claim King, you would not agree with him if you knew your stuff.
Let me just break it down because I am not going to keep playing see-saw with you,
1. He supported the Great Society. As I said, read "The Other America". It called hard-work...google it.
2. He was in favor of Affirmative Action like programs. Research Operation Breadbasket. King once said and I will paraphase, that America has done so much against the negro so he now has to do something special for the negro. He also sighted similar "affirmative action" programs in India.
3. King was against the Vietnam War for two primary reasons, one, he saw it as draining funds that could be used to fight domestic issues. Second, he saw it as another example of American imperialism of non-white countries.
Please do not tell me that it was Dems who started Vietnam because one, America has a history of such wars and two, Republicans have become the extreme war mongers in the last 40 years. King acknowledged this and detested Ronald Reagan.
4. You should go to the search box on youtube and type in MLK and Bootstraps...its from a speech by King.
5. You should research MLK's time in Chicago as well as other North and Western ghettoes where he spoke about the conditions as human rights violations and how it will only get worse. The stuff he said would upset most ignorant Americans who know little about how those places came to be.
Our media and eductaional institiutions have gone to far lengths to edit out this King in favor of promoting a more safe to the "status quo" type figure.
If King was so safe, why was J. Edgar Hoover's FBI trying to destroy him under their corrupt COINTELPRO program which most Americans know little about.
YOU MUST LOOK INTO KING BETWEEN 1965/1966 and 1968!! THOSE ARE THE YEARS THAT NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW ABOUT.
My presentation is over. Hopefully you are smarter now than you were before.
@LoveTruth86 MLK on abortion "the negro cannot win when he sacrifices the future of his children for immediate comfort and security" barrack obama is 100% for black abortions?
