Chances are the bolt is attached to the piston, so when the gun fires, the gearbox pulls the piston back and lets go of it, but the piston doesn't always stop at the same spot, so the bolt doesn't always close all the way.

And only idiots shoot people with real weapons for any reason outside of self defense. Airsoft is good for quick fun if your're really bored, or are too young to own a real weapon. Real are fun too if have a shooting range near by.
