Always loved this song but did not know who sang it. Thanks Kevin Spacey for introducing me to the great Bobby Darin !!! Aka , love the shirt Bobby ..... you were one hot looking guy !!! Justin Bieber who ? Bobby Rules forever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is from the Judy Garland show. It was filmed a couple of days after JFK was killed. It aired on Dec. 29. 1963. I was only 9 at the time, but I remember it all vividly. The country was in an emotional train wreck. I think this poignant video of Bobby singing this beautiful spiritual, sums it up quite well.
@4everbobby Thank you for telling us this. The song is even more poignant with your explanation. I bet Bobby especially chose this song for that reason.
Bobby Darin received the GRAMMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TONIGHT! His son Dodd Darin gave a beautiful speech on his behalf in yesterday's ceremony. It's on You Tube under " Bobby Darin Lifetime Award". Bobby was a versatile, multitalented genius!
This is amazing... I enjoy Darin a lot but this is way up there. We can only wonder if he did more gospel tunes -- even if he is not African-American -- his soul is dead-on! This is simply amazing!!!
Me too! He has stuff on Amazon, Ebay, old LPs. If you still spin records, he old gems are out there and WELL WORTH tracking down. I've been on a treasure hunt looking for this OVERLOOKED genius' works!
Thanks for sharing such a great performance from one amazing man! I agree, gone too soon but what a body of work he has left us and that now can be shared not only in hearing his music but also with the videos of performances and interviews. Wonderful!!
Bobby, like Elvis, wholly understood these wonderful, soul-searching ballads and was able to convey a sense of joy and hope with his marvelous talent. What more can be said? Bobby Darin was a once in a lifetime talent who was gone way too soon. Thank you Mr. Darin!!
......He knew....no accident that he sang gosple as well as anything else...his soul reaches out with every word...sentisive child of God doing his work....precious post...
Wow, one of the most underrated and diverse performers in 20th Century America...an incredible new version of an old spiritual ("On My Way To Freedom's Land"). Sounds as alive today as when it was performed to me. I would be incredulous if I saw someone like this in this day and age.
I believe its from the Garland show too. (Pretty sure) Immediately before his self imposed exile from night clubs and immediately after JFK was shot. Dec, 63.
He was just an awesome entertainer, so much energy. He performed so much great music, and was a very good actor. You could never tell how sick he was. So sad, he went so young.
Flawless & timeless.

Given the circumstancs of his life, he felt the words and conveyed the soul of the song perfectly. Authentic pain in there is what gives it power.

Soul wrenching gospel. Bobby Darin is one of a kind gargantuan -giant entertainer. No one like him since his early departure. Sad but true.

Yeah, the shirt is a goner.
Is it sacrilegious to want to tear off a man's clothes when he's singing gospel? Just asking.......

It's a very distracting shirt :-D
