You're probably doing it wrong or the opponent in attempt to counter-act the sweep probably grabbed your "kicking" leg and put it under his legs as you sweep.
Most likely you aren't creating enough space and/or your opponent is sitting back which is the wrong time to try this sweep.
As for the space, watch the video again and pay close attention to Rodrigo when he shrimps out look how much space he is creating, how he is on his side forcing the opponent to lean in the direction of the sweep.
I had the same problem and that was what I found to correct it. Good luck.
@jitzfitz Thats is great advice. I'm not a bjj guy myself, but that has not stopped me from learning some when possible. I don't recommend bjj as a first response to self defense, but I do think it fills in an important gap that other martial arts do not prepare people for. Keep fighting the good fight man cause sooner or later you could end up on the ground and if you don't know how to get the guy off of you your going to be sorry you overlooked something so simple. Cheers bro!
@LoveNiim I have done 3 martial arts and recommend bjj as a first response as long as its done with common sense. you do not want to take one man to the ground if he has 2 buddies who will kick you in the face. you dont want to use things like jumping guard on a sidewalk and of course you dont want broken glass all over while grappling. in cases where a bully or a single attacker is larger than you, forcing the fight to the ground where you have advantages of leverage and submissions works well.
Ahhhh this guy was on inside MMA last friday along with Royce and Royler but i forgot his name! Ralek was there too, but left half way and was replaced by this guy.
Why does this technique prefer to bring the knee across the stomach? If my opponent has his legs spread I find I dont have the leverage to get him over with both legs low. If I instead bring the knee up to to the shoulder and hook my foot in their armpit, I've got much more leverage. Is there a tactical reason not to sweep that way?
perhaps it's because then you have made yourself more vulnerable to the heel hook/ foot lock by placing your foot in the armpit. Just speculation. I'm pretty new to bjj.
Its not "wrong"... just different IMO. The advantage to grabbing behind the triceps is that it allows me to pull his arm/weight FORWARD a bit easier as you pull his arm in to prevent him basing. Some gyms teach a whole guard game from collar/sleeve position of the hands and it might work well for that gyms system to teach it that way. Hope this helps?
it can work grabbing at the wrist but that still leaves the opponent with a lot of arm movement and leverage to escape the grip as opposed to grabbing at the elbow/tricep.
You will need to have very good grip strength relative to your opponent or pull it off quickly before they can react.
the left arm would grab the tricep, and the right hand would be on the right side of his neck pushing, instead on on the left pulling. It is especially important to remember to pull him forward to remove his base.
OH REALLY?! THAT'S NEW!! Jesus, next thing you tell me is that you can box without gloves, and mayeb something real wild, like apply muay thai in real life, IN JEANS, NOT SHORTS!!!
I have question though what if your not wearing traditional Gi's. What if its a short sleeve shirt? Do you grab his bicep or his arm? please send me an e-mail at dragonov91@msn
