I can remember some of this series when it was broadcasted in the Netherlands in the seventies, saturday evenings late. I was in my early teens then.
As for the thriller genre, there is also a haunting series called 'Great mysteries', 1973 (the theme music is on youtube). Those episodes were also thrilling. Those episodes only lasted for 30 minutes and were introduced by Orson Welles. I wonder if that will ever be released. The same goes for Thriller, there has to be a market for it. Thanks.
I will have to have a listen to that theme music to see if it's familiar. I think I might have some recollection of that series. The Orson Welles introductions ring some bells.
Getting back to Thriller, isn't it funny how we can remember when they used to screen? In Australia it was Tuesday nights on Channel 7 at 9.30. :-)
Hi Hairylittlewombat, oh this is incredible. I've been trying to remember for more than 20 years what this series was called. Nobody I know remembers it, even when I hum the creepy theme tune and last time I looked online there was no trace of it. So thanks so much for posting this. Your video's really informative and brings it all back. Each episode terrified me in the Seventies. I'm going to have to get this box set to see if it's still as scary. cheers!
It's a great box set and worth getting. The intro is certainly hard to forget.
Some episodes have dated, but most are still very enjoyable. My fav has always been Someone At The Top Of the Stairs (Series 1 Ep 3) - still very creepy.
this is an excellent series from ATV in england . the episode called the colour of blood was also known as " the carnation killer " the creepy theme tune alway's scared the hell out of me .great stuff
Dear Mr. Wombat, thank u so much for this wonderful review. I am a UK man who got the network set at home. I know the madman set is the definite version. I always wanted to know what it looked like and your guide was very informative, so thanks for that. No disrespect it is pity that all the best versions of UK TV shows is sold abroad, this being no different. A truly excellent review. Thanks.
Oh man....i am drooling over the Australian box version. Why do they do far better version box sets in other countries...our Network set was a bulky box with 4 cases, with all the info of each episode on the opposite side of the inlay of each case. I also notice, from the madman website, the extras not on the UK set....i am seriously tempted to upgrade......?!?
@hairylittlewombat I've gone and treated myself....i'll have to do a bit of comparisons with the UK Network set. The original VT countdown is a hidden easter egg on each of the episodes which you have to skipback a chapter to see before the ATV (not AVT as you said....lol..!)...will miss that if this set does not have them! Looking forward to it...! Re. various boxsets, the UFO complete series by Umbrella is just amazing and puts shame on the UK sets which are now deleted! Good Review..!
If you google shop this in the UK it retails for £97 quid. But ASDA DVD have it for £38 quid and free delivery Just bought it. Looking forward to receiving it. It terrified me when I watched it as a kid on a Friday night!
@conradnoel Good price...yeah, I loved the show in my younger days too and like I said, I still enjoy watching them. Originally, I think Thriller screened here on Tuesday nights at 9:30.
Thanks for the comment and enjoy the 43 episodes of Thriller. :-)
Oh man I am SO getting that box set. It looks completely awesome. I love the Hammer series so it goes without saying that this would be pretty good. I also loved the Amicus flicks and all of the older UK horrors. Thanks for showing it :)
@AussieRoadshow Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, like I said, I really enjoy watching these episodes. The Brits are generally pretty good at this stuff - their old buildings and bleak weather helps with the atmosphere. :-) I should have mentioned too, Laurie Johnson's music - it's is also a key player in setting the ambience.
@hairylittlewombat Hi man. Finally got the set, despite a customs charge for the cost of sending over....! Totally over the moon with it...shame there's no VT countdown as i mentioned in a previous comment. The UK set extras are similar to the madman set, but with the Aust. set, it's got the additional stuff. I've not gone through it fully, but look so much to watching it again...!
CORRECTION RE. THE VT FOOTAGE....don't know if you're aware HLW, that the footage is before the intros to each episode which is odd.....if you notice on the playback of any episode, the timer should be just before or over 30 secs. If you skip back, you'll find the VT b/w footage.....very happy now to find....!!!!
@hairylittlewombat I'm not sure what the actual term or phrase they call this, but they have used this format on every take since the 60s. Was originally used for TV adverts and then for programmes. It's mainly a visual recording of the take, as it counts down, with a voiceover stating the name of the programme, running production number, the TAKE (1,2,3, etc.) number and sometimes the date of recording.
@hairylittlewombat This was the same easter egg that appeared on all the discs of the UK box set. That's why i'm glad they remembered to keep it in for this box set as well...!
Not aware of this series at all mate?...but certainly some classic brits actors in there...including Helen Mirren who has always been great. You must have seen 'The Long Good Friday' with her and Bob Hoskins...classic!

@velocet1976 Hey mate, thanks for watching.
Yeah, if you're a fan of Thriller, this one is a pretty good set.
It's funny cos I reckon you guys in the UK normally do far better than us in terms of extras etc...
I would definately shop around for a good price though. If you're patient you should be able to pick up a cheap set on Ebay or similar.
Thanks again, Cheers.

I've never heard of this show, but it sounds very interesting. You don't mind paying the big bucks for quality sets like this. It looks incredbile!
I always think of "Caligula" when I hear Helen Mirren's name. lol
Can't wait for your next video!! Keep up the good work.

@MainManAus Thanks for the kind words, mate. Ahhh, yes, Caligula...I have the blue unrated R1 release and the crappy cut red release.
I might do another vid over Easter and I also have trailers for Envy and The Magician.
Cheers, mate - thanks again.
