  • i'm fucking crying

  • @daisypaste same

  • he's so excited to get the award! RIP

  • Bradley's face is just priceless! other actors would have been disappointed they didn't get it but they were all just so happy for him. RIP john, american tv is all the weaker without you.

  • `Johny, we hardly knew yee`

  • There wasn't one person in that room that didn't want him to win.

  • awkward for rob lowe :p

  • I think his speech is the best I've heard even to this day. I miss Johnny so much. ;(

  • This was unquestionably John Spencer's season. The whole cast knew it... you can tell by their reaction that they're thrilled for him. RIP John.

  • Way to go, John! And well deserved. We will always remember you. R.I.P.

  • Awww. I love how happy the rest of the cast is for him.

  • Man i miss john..he was a great person and actor. Thank you for all your hard work. We miss you John.

  • R.I.P John.

  • first movie i saw him in was War Games , where he acted towards a young Michael Madsen. he was very good actor even back then 1983 & well deserved award to him.

  • When I saw the actual episode that Spencer won this Emmy for (Season 3, Episode 10: Bartlet for America), I knew he was in contention. It was some of the best acting I've ever seen in my life. If you haven't seen the episode, find it and watch it. You'll know why it was impossible for anyone other than John Spencer to go home with the award.

  • First of all, I can't seem to stop watching this video--if only for Brad Whitford's visceral reaction to John's win at 0:30. Second of all, why in the hell didn't Brad start chanting, "Leo! Leo!"? Third of all, this is the greatest network television series of the past twenty years, if not all time. Third of all, this guy's name isn't John Spencer, it is and will always be Leo Thomas McGarry. Bartlett For America in 2012 and beyond! RIP LTM

  • I'm so glad john got the recognition he deserved before we lost him.

  • You could tell that John and Martin were good friends as well as cast mates.

  • *sniffle* RIP

  • Look at the fist pump from Rob Lowe in Richard Schiff's box.

  • @JPLosman7777 You could really tell how the whole cast was so glad that he won, I mean, Richard, Dule, and Bradley were all in contention for the win but every single one of them was just so happy, especially Bradley's reaction! And it was great seeing Rob's fist pump, you just know from that little moment that he was rooting for John and so happy! John Spencer truly was a legend! :)

  • @MinionBooBoo I think Bradley would actually have been upset if he himself had won.

  • Rest in Peace.

  • Why are President Bartlet and Leo at the Emmy awards!?

  • Now THAT is how you make an acceptance speech! He definitely went over the time allowed but there was no way they were going to cut that speech short.

  • i'm french, i love this video.

it's all that i love from "the west wing", they 're so friendly each other.

what is the feeling we have with the serie comes from this absolutely wonderful passion and friendship they had together.

John, if you hear me where you are now, you were sincerely a man i liked a lot ! thanks for this great video

  • Everytime I watch this... *tear*

  • John Spencer has the best smirking smile of all time

  • The best TV series ever made. RIP John we will miss you.

  • A great celebration of Bradley Whitford!! Josh Lyman FOREVER!!!

  • Seriously, what kind of di*khe@d has disliked this? Anyone with even a passing appreciation of the genius that was The West Wing, LeoMcGarry's character or John Spencer's portrayal will have loved this, and anyone who didn't just shouldn't be here

  • More class than I've ever seen - on stage or off - from this business called acting. We miss you, Mr. Spencer.

  • @antonzap That's just the character he usually plays. They are douchebags. Josh Lyman too. I never liked him.

  • 4 out of 6 nominations! Yeah the west wing had the best actors ever!!!

  • Leo McGarry Forever!!!

  • Of course!

  • "john it seems like we hardly knew you"

can't believe its been five years

    rip Leo

  • I'm convinced that one of the things that made this show so amazing to watch were the actors, not only their skill but they'e genuine friendships and warmth.

They each have a beauty that shines through in every episode. I remember thinking of this moment during the scenes filmed after John Spencer's death, it must have been so unbelievably difficult for all of them.

John Spencer is still missed and this clip just shows why I adore Brad Whitford! (...and Rob, Allison and Richard of course! :-D)

  • Bless him!!! I don't know much about Spencer, but he plays the role of Leo McGarry exceptionally... it inspires me to work and actually do thing... he will be missed..

  • I love John Spencer, so much!

  • I miss John Spencer...he was a fantastic actor! I still remember watching him in his LA Law days where he was also very good!

  • i love how happy all of them are for him!

  • Humility is beautiful, perhaps the most beautiful of things. Very related and perhaps as joyful as innocence itself.

  • The show was great but I always felt anything he was in, as mentioned, was made by greater by his presence-i remember when he was on L.A. Law-sorely missed Mr. Spencer but not forgotten.

  • Miss this guy, he made mediocre films better just by his presence on the screen.

  • what a wonderful human being. god bless him

  • Damn look at that bitch's teeth @2:11...

    Lookin like a straight SaberToothTiger...

  • The true and dedicated loyalty and friendship really showed amongst the cast when John Spencer won this award...sincerely touching.

  • @AMYLYN78 I know right? It's so clear that none of his fellow actors were upset about their loss, but instead, they were all so happy that he won. Just look at Bradley Whitford's reaction, how he jumped into the air and was estatic, how Rob Lowe sitting behind Richard Schiff did a little first pump in the air at the announcement. It's so rare these days to see a cast that is so strongly dedicated to each other and not think of their own win.

  • haha, man. The West Wing just dominated back then

  • They just don't make tv shows like this anymore. The West Wing was an amazing show.

  • RIP John S ... amazing actor!

  • "Delicously Redundant" - Love you Leo!!! errrr i mean John :) ( you will forever be Leo to me)

  • @DJRockinRob true!

  • How awesome is it that the moment Maarg announced John Spencer, the biggest reaction came from Brad Whitford?

  • @MrFnClean

    "Look at my compadres!"

It's a team thing, a win for one is a win for all on the West Wing team. Ain't it something?

  • Rest in peace, John.

  • BEST show ever on television, and this form a staunch conservative

  • Yes, there will never be an equal....the West Wing had the best ensemble cast ever, and without question some of the best writing, directing, producing and music ever. John Spencer was a class act in a cast filled with class acts. Nobody writes better for TV than Sorkin, and Snuffy Walden has been putting together great music for TV shows since back in his days working on Thirtysomething; his use of Jeff Buckley's recording of Hallelujah in the episode, Posse Comitatus, was brilliant.

  • fancyfred, i totally agree with everything that you wrote. Also dire straits brothers in arms at end of s2 was an absolutley perfect piece of music.

  • ensayers, I agree completely. Snuffy Walden is brilliant when it comes to choosing the right music to set the right mood for the right episodes. Also, Two Cathedrals - the last episode of the second season - was one of the very best episodes of the entire series....particularly when you put it together with the two part Manchester episode(s). My personal favorite episodes however are the first three episodes of season two.

  • @fancyfred I know. The first season finale/second season 2-part premiere are by far my favorites out of the whole show. To me, that moment feels like the emotional focal point of the show.

  • Four out of six. That was a dream cast. Best cast on any TV show ever!

    V.

  • There was never any doubt just how much talent that cast had! All of the original cast had Emmy noms or wins. This cast dominated in the acting Emmys and Best Drama!

This was possibly hands down the best drama series cast there is!

  • I absolutely loved him, great man, fabulous actor, he died way to soon, you are so missed John more than you'll ever know. Loved you in the cop movies.

  • "They are so happy for me, and that's it all about The West Wing" 1:00

  • great man... great speech... john, you are the man

  • I remember him from The Rock.

He was a good actor. Rest In Peace, John.

  • I've loved John Spencer since I first saw him in LA Law and Presumed Innocent. His smile is so infectious. Wonderful actor. Based on his friends reaction a wonderful man. WW had excellent writing but I have to believe that the offscreen positive relationships bled over into their onscreen personas. They are all great actors it just made it magical. I miss you John and congratulations.

  • wow, when 4/6 of the nominees are West Wing cast, you KNOW that show is kicking ass and taking names...

  • Four actors from my favorite show nominated for an award presented by two actors from my second favorite show...Can't get any better than this

  • Has there ever been a tv show as awesome as The West Wing? I don't think so.

  • @srb123ou Why yes there have. The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Mad Men... ever heard of them?

  • It truly shows the quality of a show when more of half its cast has nominations in the acting categories!

GOD BLESS JOHN SPENCER! WE MISS YOU!

  • The finest actors and some of the finest actresses on the most superbly show ever written since M*A*S*H. I could drag out my thesaurus, but I'm pretty sure I don't need to. John Spencer, God bless, Sir, & thank you. Aaron - do you have any idea how happy you made us & how educated we got from your writings? We don't watch anything anymore. But I have our good ol' BBC mysteries, comedies, & our West Wing DVDs. It was like WW of Disney. Me & my little boy, now 19 USCG, This was our mom/son show

  • I am happy and sad at the same time..Happy that a great man, gracious, talented and just a kick ass guy wins.....Sad that we lost him. As a west wing fan, John will always be in my heart...

  • what does it say when a single show has 4 of the 6 nominees... and i love josh's reaction when they announce the results... sooo classy

  • BTW, I forgot to mention how much I love the huge bear hug Martin gives him when he wins, because it almost made me forget that I wasn't looking at Bartlet and Leo. :D I love him so much -- great man.

  • An amazing actor, from the best show.

  • such a hero

  • John Spencer, you're the man. R.I.P.

  • Peace Be with You John.

    You are missed...

  • Rest in Peace John

  • Was Bradley Whitford going for a kiss? :D

  • The main characters in the west wing are so good. I forgot they're actors. I no longer think of Martin Sheen as an actor, I think of him as some pragmatic new hampshire economist that became president. Even John Spencer, you just think of him as Leo McGarry.

  • jrs89 - How true!

As I write this (11-07-09 @ 20:12pdt) your comment is already at +23 thumbs up.

  • I just now discovered the West Wing and I'm voraciously taking in all the episodes - (about to start season 7) and Leo McGarry is by far my favorite character. I just read his IMDB bio and I came here to find clips of him as a teenager on the Patty Duke show... go search Patty Duke Frankie Avalon for the episode I saw him in.

  • I'm so happy that John got the recognition he deserved before he passed, what both a fantastic actor and a show!

  • What an actor what a programme.I miss them both.

  • He is so right when he said an actor is only as good as the material they get.

This show and caliber of actors are truely missed. The shows on now are junk.

  • Who is the woman w/ John? It isn't Patti Mariano, was he dating someone else?

  • BTW, I have a request: could you put up Richard Schiff's win from 2000? The first season..the show swamped the the emmys...would be really awesome.

  • Yeah! I missed when Schiff won his Emmy! I would love to see that moment here! Please put it up!!

  • The brotherhood between Jed Bartlet and Leo McGarry was something truly special.

  • Look how LOVED he was by everyone there! I miss him, I miss his smile....

  • Truly one of the greatest losses of the last 20 years....Spencer was a man that brought out in his charaters a likability and closeness that few actors are able to acheieve......REST IN PEACE.....

  • I am just finishing watching the series, he just died on the show & it made me so sad. I loved his character on West Wing. Rest in Peace, John

  • Fantastic!

  • i'm literally crying.

    we miss you, John.

  • That is both the most awesome and devestating thing I have ever seen

John will always be my favourite, but Bradley and Dule and Martin etc reaction was just priceless

  • Very cool. Bradley Whitford looked happier than if he'd won it himself!

  • Well, you know, flashy movie stars are petty and selfish, but good actors like Whitford, especially character actors, take their work and the *quality* of their work very seriously. So if Whitford personally thought that Spencer was better than he was, he would be happier to see Spencer win than himself, because its only right--its vindication for true quality acting.

  • @laura0329 "You're not willing to toss it overboard to win. You're willing to toss it overboard to avoid disappointing Leo." Bradley Whitford is Josh Lyman.

  • The reactions of his cast mates really illustrate the kind of man he was...to have those people feel so overjoyed for him. Wow!

    I still miss him.

  • I love how the other nominees from the West Wing were overjoyed when he won ... especially Bradley Whitfords "YES!!" and he jumps out of his seat.

  • Of all the television shows in history, the West Wing has to be amongst the great's!...And John Spencer's performance in this show was certainly one of it's most defining aspects, rest in peace brother...

  • deliciously redundant

  • He is a real deal. i miss him so much. WW is all about John.

  • I love how his castmates are the first to jump up and applaud, even if they were running against them. And I love that he was sitting next to Martin Sheen. I hope they were as close in real life as they were on screen.

  • Most of what I've read/heard/seen indicates that they were indeed very close off-screen as well as on-screen.

I remember reading (I forget where, unfortunately) that when Spencer died, Sheen was quoted as saying something to the effect that he'd just lost a brother.

  • R.I.P.

  • I know everyone has said this, but it´s amazing how his castmates are soooooo happy for him!! It gets me every time!!

"So this, my friends, is deliciously redundant"

I love John Spencer and his Leo!

  • you can see why this show was this great, those people all legitimately care about each other. The chemistry is really amazing.

  • Still miss ya John Spencer. The West Wing wouldn't be the same...

  • God, this almost made me cry. I was so sad when John spencer died. RIP and you earned the emmy. Not to mention, as nascarkraz said, TWW completely owned the nominations. Best show ever.

  • During the Aaron Sorkin era TWW owned the Emmy nods almost every time. I miss this show so very much!

  • RIP John you are sorely missed.

  • Great great man! In a show like West Wing, only the best had place. And John was, without doubt, one of the best. RIP John.

  • The reaction of Brad when John was anounced as the winner. Just love it. Miss you John.

  • I know, so nice!

  • He was so lovely, it is sad he did live to see Obama win. I can't watch the episodes when Leo has a heart attack or the one when Leo dies, it is too painful and sad.

  • RIP Leo... RIP John Spencer! I cry everytime I watch The West Wing and see Leo's character die. We miss you Johnny!

  • didn't John Spencer, in real life, die after their last season, but had him die during the last season, or did he really die during the last season? Because I remember that his character died during the alst season. And if he REALLY died during the season, then isn't it coincidential that they had him die off when n real life he was really dying? I DON'T REMEMBER!

  • He died in December of the final season. Caused them to re-write a majority of the final episodes...

  • He passed away in December (2005) while they were still filming the 7th season. They literally re-wrote every episode from then on out. He was such a great actor and I miss him so much!! He really deserved this Emmy.

  • John Spencer is a wonderful actor and a lovely guy, and its truly sad he's no longer here.

  • Here, Here!

  • that's the thing about the west wing. it just doesn't matter who wins an award, coz you could put anyone of the cast up there and he or she'd still deserve it. there were only top actors on that show and that together with the top notch writing staff made it one of the best shows in tv history.

  • Oh goodness this made me cry. What a lovely cast, and what a great actor John was.

  • What makes this is Brad's reaction. They are all SO happy for him. I love it!

  • yeah, i agree with you, their chemistry is so apparent. love it too.

  • love brads reaction. He just jumped out of his seat.

  • That's fantastic, I love how Mr. Whitford jumps up. so great!

  • I think of him as simply Leo McGarry :)

  • I miss you West Wing. I miss you John.

  • Didn't you take out the feelings of shame at your failed life on the YouTube comments board, of all places?

  • What the heck are you talking about? I"m really trying, but I cannot make sense of your comment.

    "drawgo (7 months ago)

Didn't you take out the feelings of shame at your failed life on the YouTube comments board, of all places?"

  • ok....you may dislike john spencer....but please do not dishonor his memory. i am just asking for some respect please as a human being.

  • You can tell by the way he smiles, and by the way everyone is happy for him (expecially Bradley Whitford) how a sweet man he has been. And, of course, he was an incredible actor.

  • LEGEND.

  • deliciously redundant. great speech.

  • What an ensemble. miss this show so much!

  • the other guys really seemed very happy for him.

  • This put the biggest smile on my face. :)

  • Also I love that Bradley Whitford celebrates more than Spencer when the winner is announced!

  • He is the great, excellent and awesome, the best!!!

  • I love Dule Hill tripping over himself to pat John Spencer's back.

  • What a class act. Beautiful speech, brillant actor. He is sorely missed.

  • I became West Wing fan when Bravo started re-runs. I didn't even know John Spencer at this time.

It's really great I can watch his Emmy win now. What a great speach! What a classy man! Thank you for posting this and please don't erase!!

  • excellent speech by John. i miss him. West Wing is the best ever tv show in history.

  • I love whata great guy Bradley is. No fake smile. He jumps for joy screaming immediately. Great guy. Although I have been cathing up on ALIAS lately and Garber should have won at some point. Never did

  • Now how's that for class? Certainly one of the great Emmy acceptance speeches. To see how happy his castmates were (when they were also nominated)says a great deal about the kind of man JS was. He was loved and respected and he is greatly missed.

  • Wow...4 outta 6 people are for the West Wing. as a WestPhile, I gotta say...I LOVE THIS SHOW LOL.

  • Congrats John Spencer i love the west wing

  • John Spencer was outstanding, Leo McGarry is the boss we all want, a true gem in a brilliant show.

  • What a legend.

  • what an amazing actor!

  • What a fantastic and passionate speech. So sad that John Spencer has passed away. Many thanks NOBLE.

  • That was so great to see Johnny win. I miss him so much. And I couldn't believe it, they took over the entire catagory just about. WOW. Thank you for uploading this. :)

  • I've seen this clip before but Bradley Whitford's reaction gets me every single freakin' time. Such great people, all of them.
