Bradley's face is just priceless! other actors would have been disappointed they didn't get it but they were all just so happy for him. RIP john, american tv is all the weaker without you.
first movie i saw him in was War Games , where he acted towards a young Michael Madsen. he was very good actor even back then 1983 & well deserved award to him.
When I saw the actual episode that Spencer won this Emmy for (Season 3, Episode 10: Bartlet for America), I knew he was in contention. It was some of the best acting I've ever seen in my life. If you haven't seen the episode, find it and watch it. You'll know why it was impossible for anyone other than John Spencer to go home with the award.
First of all, I can't seem to stop watching this video--if only for Brad Whitford's visceral reaction to John's win at 0:30. Second of all, why in the hell didn't Brad start chanting, "Leo! Leo!"? Third of all, this is the greatest network television series of the past twenty years, if not all time. Third of all, this guy's name isn't John Spencer, it is and will always be Leo Thomas McGarry. Bartlett For America in 2012 and beyond! RIP LTM
@JPLosman7777 You could really tell how the whole cast was so glad that he won, I mean, Richard, Dule, and Bradley were all in contention for the win but every single one of them was just so happy, especially Bradley's reaction! And it was great seeing Rob's fist pump, you just know from that little moment that he was rooting for John and so happy! John Spencer truly was a legend! :)
Now THAT is how you make an acceptance speech! He definitely went over the time allowed but there was no way they were going to cut that speech short.
Seriously, what kind of di*khe@d has disliked this? Anyone with even a passing appreciation of the genius that was The West Wing, LeoMcGarry's character or John Spencer's portrayal will have loved this, and anyone who didn't just shouldn't be here
I'm convinced that one of the things that made this show so amazing to watch were the actors, not only their skill but they'e genuine friendships and warmth.
They each have a beauty that shines through in every episode. I remember thinking of this moment during the scenes filmed after John Spencer's death, it must have been so unbelievably difficult for all of them.
John Spencer is still missed and this clip just shows why I adore Brad Whitford! (...and Rob, Allison and Richard of course! :-D)
Bless him!!! I don't know much about Spencer, but he plays the role of Leo McGarry exceptionally... it inspires me to work and actually do thing... he will be missed..
The show was great but I always felt anything he was in, as mentioned, was made by greater by his presence-i remember when he was on L.A. Law-sorely missed Mr. Spencer but not forgotten.
@AMYLYN78 I know right? It's so clear that none of his fellow actors were upset about their loss, but instead, they were all so happy that he won. Just look at Bradley Whitford's reaction, how he jumped into the air and was estatic, how Rob Lowe sitting behind Richard Schiff did a little first pump in the air at the announcement. It's so rare these days to see a cast that is so strongly dedicated to each other and not think of their own win.
Yes, there will never be an equal....the West Wing had the best ensemble cast ever, and without question some of the best writing, directing, producing and music ever. John Spencer was a class act in a cast filled with class acts. Nobody writes better for TV than Sorkin, and Snuffy Walden has been putting together great music for TV shows since back in his days working on Thirtysomething; his use of Jeff Buckley's recording of Hallelujah in the episode, Posse Comitatus, was brilliant.
ensayers, I agree completely. Snuffy Walden is brilliant when it comes to choosing the right music to set the right mood for the right episodes. Also, Two Cathedrals - the last episode of the second season - was one of the very best episodes of the entire series....particularly when you put it together with the two part Manchester episode(s). My personal favorite episodes however are the first three episodes of season two.
@fancyfred I know. The first season finale/second season 2-part premiere are by far my favorites out of the whole show. To me, that moment feels like the emotional focal point of the show.
There was never any doubt just how much talent that cast had! All of the original cast had Emmy noms or wins. This cast dominated in the acting Emmys and Best Drama!
This was possibly hands down the best drama series cast there is!
I absolutely loved him, great man, fabulous actor, he died way to soon, you are so missed John more than you'll ever know. Loved you in the cop movies.
I've loved John Spencer since I first saw him in LA Law and Presumed Innocent. His smile is so infectious. Wonderful actor. Based on his friends reaction a wonderful man. WW had excellent writing but I have to believe that the offscreen positive relationships bled over into their onscreen personas. They are all great actors it just made it magical. I miss you John and congratulations.
The finest actors and some of the finest actresses on the most superbly show ever written since M*A*S*H. I could drag out my thesaurus, but I'm pretty sure I don't need to. John Spencer, God bless, Sir, & thank you. Aaron - do you have any idea how happy you made us & how educated we got from your writings? We don't watch anything anymore. But I have our good ol' BBC mysteries, comedies, & our West Wing DVDs. It was like WW of Disney. Me & my little boy, now 19 USCG, This was our mom/son show
I am happy and sad at the same time..Happy that a great man, gracious, talented and just a kick ass guy wins.....Sad that we lost him. As a west wing fan, John will always be in my heart...
BTW, I forgot to mention how much I love the huge bear hug Martin gives him when he wins, because it almost made me forget that I wasn't looking at Bartlet and Leo. :D I love him so much -- great man.
The main characters in the west wing are so good. I forgot they're actors. I no longer think of Martin Sheen as an actor, I think of him as some pragmatic new hampshire economist that became president. Even John Spencer, you just think of him as Leo McGarry.
I just now discovered the West Wing and I'm voraciously taking in all the episodes - (about to start season 7) and Leo McGarry is by far my favorite character. I just read his IMDB bio and I came here to find clips of him as a teenager on the Patty Duke show... go search Patty Duke Frankie Avalon for the episode I saw him in.
Truly one of the greatest losses of the last 20 years....Spencer was a man that brought out in his charaters a likability and closeness that few actors are able to acheieve......REST IN PEACE.....
Well, you know, flashy movie stars are petty and selfish, but good actors like Whitford, especially character actors, take their work and the *quality* of their work very seriously. Why do you say "it is sad he did live to see Obama win"? What difference would that make? If you are suggesting that the West Wing was somehow a program put on TV to help convince the American public of the idea of a minority winning the Presidency, is that not a form of propaganda? The use of TV to convince the American public to think in a certain way?
didn't John Spencer, in real life, die after their last season, but had him die during the last season, or did he really die during the last season? Because I remember that his character died during the alst season. And if he REALLY died during the season, then isn't it coincidential that they had him die off when n real life he was really dying? I DON'T REMEMBER!
He passed away in December (2005) while they were still filming the 7th season. They literally re-wrote every episode from then on out. He was such a great actor and I miss him so much!! He really deserved this Emmy.
that's the thing about the west wing. it just doesn't matter who wins an award, coz you could put anyone of the cast up there and he or she'd still deserve it. there were only top actors on that show and that together with the top notch writing staff made it one of the best shows in tv history.
You can tell by the way he smiles, and by the way everyone is happy for him (expecially Bradley Whitford) how a sweet man he has been. And, of course, he was an incredible actor.
I love whata great guy Bradley is. No fake smile. He jumps for joy screaming immediately. Great guy. Although I have been cathing up on ALIAS lately and Garber should have won at some point. Never did
Now how's that for class? Certainly one of the great Emmy acceptance speeches. To see how happy his castmates were (when they were also nominated)says a great deal about the kind of man JS was. He was loved and respected and he is greatly missed.
That was so great to see Johnny win. I miss him so much. And I couldn't believe it, they took over the entire catagory just about. WOW. Thank you for uploading this. :)

The use of TV to convince the American public to think in a certain way?

RIP Leo... RIP John Spencer! I cry everytime I watch The West Wing and see Leo's character die. We miss you Johnny!

didn't John Spencer, in real life, die after their last season, but had him die during the last season, or did he really die during the last season? Because I remember that his character died during the alst season. And if he REALLY died during the season, then isn't it coincidential that they had him die off when n real life he was really dying? I DON'T REMEMBER!

He died in December of the final season. Caused them to re-write a majority of the final episodes...

Oh goodness this made me cry. What a lovely cast, and what a great actor John was.

I did fail...I failed at putting a pound of jizz up your grandmas shit box. Instead I settled for your dads crab hole.

You can tell by the way he smiles, and by the way everyone is happy for him (expecially Bradley Whitford) how a sweet man he has been. And, of course, he was an incredible actor.

I became West Wing fan when Bravo started re-runs. I didn't even know John Spencer at this time.
It's really great I can watch his Emmy win now. What a great speach! What a classy man! Thank you for posting this and please don't erase!!

I love whata great guy Bradley is. No fake smile. He jumps for joy screaming immediately. Great guy. Although I have been cathing up on ALIAS lately and Garber should have won at some point. Never did
obrien1187 4 years ago 5
Now how's that for class? Certainly one of the great Emmy acceptance speeches. To see how happy his castmates were (when they were also nominated)says a great deal about the kind of man JS was. He was loved and respected and he is greatly missed.
