  • i like it, but the face at 4:47 scared me!

  • distryed somthing near and dear to disney possibly the oldest thing in the parks

  • Savvie?!

  • For years my family has made it tradition to visit Disneyland every year, and it is quite sad to see all of the original memorable things being converted into newer attractions. Even though it will be missed and it's original, that Walt himself over saw we have to keep into consideration that Tom sawyer Island was a really amazing attraction in its day, but times are changing and they have to make it more appealing to newer generations. It will be missed, but i am also i big fan of Pirates.

  • man up sweetheart....

  • 240p?? awe

  • TOM AND HUCK FOREVER!

  • Aye, i guess its better than a poke in the eye.....but not by much! Argh

  • how come the dont have captain teages playin guitar. if i had to listen to that horrid song id at least like to see a real pirate... not sumone that loks like zac efron on halloween.

  • Nice job on the remodel....I think Walt would be proud to see how far things have come since his time.....Now if they'd just do something about the OUTRAGEOUS ticket prices, more people could enjoy it.

  • This really sadddens me. While piarates lair is cool, its not what Walt wanted. I used to play on Tom Sawyers Island alot as a kid, and I didnt realize that none of the island is Tom Sayers anymore. I feel as if Disney is changing too much of the original park. Like The Swiss family robinson treehouse and pirates od the carribean. It makes me sad to see it.

  • This is sad. Walt Disney and Mark Twian would have been so upset. I love Tom Sawyer. At least there is still Walt Disney World. I can't believe they did this. Walt Disney put a lot of hard work into that island. And as someone said, this was Walt's favorite story.

  • This is so sad. I always loved Tom Sawyer's island. Well at least their is Walt Disney World.

  • Um... are we a'skeered that Mark Twain will rise from his grave and sue or something? (Although, I can't imagine Arthur Rackham wouldn't do the same...) Whoah... the song sounds like some weird rendition of "Whiskey Your The Devil"!

  • I think the pirate theme for the island works well with the old tie in story of the area the Pirates ride full of its namesake sailors, the Mansion having pictures of some of the Pirates characters and was supposedly owned by a Pirate, and an old crypt leading from the mansion underground to the Island. (the crypt was never used i believe, but the entrance is still there-blocked off-and possibly the decorations of skeletons and gold are still there)

  • Well I liked it, I think it's very historically accurate. I've read before that Pirates typically break out in song and dance to people in between robbing, fighting and making movies.

  • I wanna go there just for that short Pintel and Ragetti thing ^^

  • b-b-b-b-b-roll!

  • though they could have done better with this, you have to remember that Walt always spoke of the park not only growing, but changing. So they do need to keep things going with new ideas, and i would rather they create something awesome and totally new than rebuild an old attraction :]

  • I have to agree with Knusper: Disney has lost all imagination!

  • @samsen1 It isn't magic, it's only money:-/ I am so happy, that I have visited DIsneyland before the major changings - although Nature's wonderland was already gone. At Europe, we have big trouble with Disney because they are dubbing the classics again and again. Getting worse every time!!!!! We asked to rerelease the old dubbings but they just say: NO! Shame on them!

  • @samsen1 If you are interessted in the dubbing-Theme - Just watch "Pinocchio synchronvergleich" or the channel of the User Pineheadraiser.

  • ...this guy is very depressing

  • Why? What for? Just because this popular Jack Sparrow? Poor Walt! They are changing Disneyland more and more. Tom Sawyer's Island was so great! This is just Marketing-Shit.

  • @KnusperhexeRosmer Remember that Pirates of the Caribbean is based on the ride that Walt Disney designed!

  • @KimOfDrac Sure, I know and I love that ride. But I loved "Tom Sawyer's Island" too and I do not need another Pirates attraction, just because the movie was such a success.

  • @KnusperhexeRosmer Same here, I loved goin in the caves and stuff. I dont go there anymore due to the pirates thing.

  • @KnusperhexeRosmer Yeah, we're going down there in like 4 days, I'm kinda bummed about this because I always liked TS Island.

  • @sgtpepper1138 Hi pepper, how was it? Did you enjoy?

  • @KnusperhexeRosmer yeah, though we didn't make it over to the island. we just got caught up in other stuff. it was great except it was insanly busy, and I lost one my cameras. But it was really fun other than that.

though I almost enjoyed Universal more for the one day we were there.

  • @sgtpepper1138 I loved the E.T.-Ride at Universal and always wished, they would do Peter Pan like that. I suggest, they should treat their classics in a better way. Just imagine: wildwaterrafting with Pinocchio like "Jaws-the Ride", a rollercoaster with the Cinderella's mice through a landscape with big shoes and always in trouble with Lucifer:-)

  • @sgtpepper1138 And Tom Sawyer was one of Walt's best loved stories!

  • I don't really like it. I mean they already have a ride and now they need to make a whole island?

  • i was there opening weekend it was kool

  • What happened to Fort Wilderness? I went on Pirates Lair and saw that it was closed. Also, where is the blacksmith's shop? I think that what they did was okay, but it was really cool as Tom Sayer's Island.

  • it has been closed due to bugs eating it

  • if they ever bring back the original they shuld reopen fort wilderness, but without the fake rifles

  • is that weird al in the video?

  • Ugh, what a let down. I was expecting much more from the Pirate's Lair. It's virtually Tom Sawyer's island but with a few pirate additions.

  • the only time i've been here has been to meet jack sparrow. now that i've seen it, i think i'm gonna go next time

  • wow no more tom saywer man i barley went to the island i wonder do they still have the bridge on top of watter with the barrels underneath those were my favorite i used to jump as hard i could in the days..

  • Still there. Was there today and saw them!

  • Um since Tom Sayers Island Is no longer Tom Sayers Island, is it still annexed to Missouri? Im really curious.

  • they kept the caves and put the as the line SMART

  • The kid in the green shirt body was later found on the back side of the island. Turns out that he could not find his way off the island.

  • Sad to see the new Disney team destroying all that Walt Disney had envisioned..is there going to be anything left after they are done? So depressing to see it all gone.

  • I'm sad, too...

I don't wanna go there now...

  • well walt Disney wanted his park to keep changing or moving forward or something like that.. Usually when a new attraction replaces an old attraction.. chances are some props from the old attraction will be hiding in the new attraction.. like rufus the sleeping bear. Once sleeping in a cave than Splash mountain came.. Rufus had a new home in Splash Mountain ( before the first drop you can hear him sleeping ) Than theres the eyore parking sign at Indiana jones and the country bear heads at pooh

  • wasn't it walt disney himself who said "as long as there is imagination left in the world, disneyland will never be complete"

  • Comment removed

  • @Snookiebutt but dont you think walt is looking down at disneyland seeing how sucessful disneyland has been and how much people love disneyland, even though people think walt disney's own ideas and and what he had envisioned. if people didnt remodel it, we wouldnt have little scavenger hunts to find the old disneyland ride parts and things like that. all that matters is that how disneyand makes everyone smile :)

  • While it is sad to lose a wonderful peice of theme park history, I find the updates wonderfully refreshing. Besides pirates are so cool and jake gets another show other then the pirates accatimey. (sorry I have very bad spelling)

  • I wonder if they'll do the same to the one in WDW.

  • I used to love Tom Sawyer Island, but they really did some terrific stuff with the pirate stuff there!

  • I think it's so sad that they changed Tom Sawyer's Island, especially because Walt Disney's favorite author was Mark Twain.

(But don't get me wrong, I don't mind if they change SOME things to keep it 'fresh')

  • dont be so sad they take the old out and bring new "pirates" is there new thing not tom swayer

  • i agree with TBZK.disney is doing what its famous for

  • Comment removed

  • so they completly got rid of tom sawyer island? damn i was hoping to go on it next week when i go to dland. walt disney would be pissed if he knew that they were changing his ride that he put so much work into. he even made a pact with the state of missouri so that tom s island would become apart of it. damn.

  • although its always sad to get rid of classics i like that Disney is including more attractions for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies... as long as they don't come out with a Hannah Montana ride i'm happy :)

  • they need to add more characters to pirates of the carribean like elizbeth swan and orlando blooms character and tia dalma

  • I think I saw Sparrow kicking a Will Turner-like guy's ass in the video.

  • @JackLORDofTOASTppl Yes well - that DOES make one realize that it could be a looooot worse!

  • when i was there in 2008 and the head popped out of the hole in dead man's grotto (about 4:45) and i was petrified for life!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I find it mildly depressing since I was always dearly fond of T.S. Island. I'm glad it came out looking so good though. Quite entertaining.

I hafta say I'm quite glad they left the one in WDW alone.

  • I like Pirates Lair I cant deny it. I never had been to Tom sawyer's island from what I remember. I wish I had gone though.

The first time I went to the island was mostly because I was waiting in line to take a pic with Jack on the mainland and he said that he needed to go to the island so we and others followed and then we actually ended up chasing sparrow (not just us but a bunch of people) around the island and we FINALLY caught him to take a picture, it was a hilarious experience.

  • Pirates Island is cool and all, but as you said, Walt personally designed that island, and i remember going there in `03 and I loved it, so I think that they should have left it. At least they still kinda have one in Disney World

  • i heard they might change the one in disney world

  • NO! It's still as a fort!

  • i no it is but, i read this article saying there thinking bout changing it to pirates lair

  • it's only a matter of time .... =[

    remember Mr. Toad? x*[

  • Unfortunately I never got to see tom's island

    I wanted too. . .

  • like ive never done this...when u get on the island is it a ride or like a walk thru type of thing?

  • walk thru

  • you know, ive been to disney world about a hundred times and i never went to tom sawyer island. the wait was always like an hour long. did they change the one in disney world too???

  • No They havent changed the one at disney world

  • thanx

  • they need to change the one in florida, it would be cool

  • Comment removed

  • I think the my favorite part is dead mans grotto its so cool very cool special effects!!!

  • I went to disneyland just 3 days after this opened in may 07 i went there may 29th for my 13th bday and when i went on it i got lost for like over 20 min i thought i would never get off!!!

  • whoa. i had NO clue about this. awesome vid!

  • Awesome Video footage! What a fabulous eye you have in your film-making! Really enjoyed that. Felt like I was watching a Discovery Channel program.

  • its brillient lol

  • Does this go for WDW as well?

I love your videos! (The first time I watched one, I thought John Malkovich was the narrator, haha.)

  • At first I was really sad that they did the whole "Pirates" thing because it was just dovetailing the movie's success. Disney has sure whored in the money on that endeavor. However, since hardly anyone went to the island anymore, I was afraid that someday they would get rid of it. At least the pirate things, though gimmicky, aren't too obtrusive and bring people back onto the island.

  • Pintel and Ragetti? Hahahaha. Last time I went to Disneyland last August, we didn't even know about the Pirate's Lair.

  • well the company has to fulfill the costumers' needs...

    i don't like it

  • I think the new vamp of the island sucks. I liked the classic island. Now, disney is going too computer generated and such. It's starting to lose it's classic look. I'm a huge fan of the older movies, like steamboat willie. I miss those simpler times.

  • Yeah. I do like the Pirates Of The Caribbean related stuff. But I just wish Disney wouldn't make all their animated films 3D and made by Pixar. I'd like some of the old fashioned 2D stuff.

  • Yeah I was getting sick of the 3d computer generated animations and im excited about the movie "The Princess and the Frog" thats coming out in hand drawn animation this year!

  • i went on Piarte Lair. its a really fun place, it was really hot when i went on it this past Wednesday so we didnt stay long, but a lot of things to see, plus we got our picture taken with Captin Jack Sparrow

  • I miss the classic disneyland

  • Why not try and enjoy disneyland the way it is. Its always PRESENT, and ppl get mad when they change things.

U know i bet alot of ppl older then u were mad when they turned it into what u call "classic disneyland"

  • when this came out i felt so ripped off but good job i love every video you put up

  • i didnt realize it was done when i went to my grad nite lol but they didn let us on the island..... =[ lol

  • oh man i'm so excited for pirate's lair! i'm going to miss tom sawyer, but i'm glad they are making these changes

  • me 2!

  • Well done! Informational and well shot! I'm gonna watch all you're videos dude, now that there's finally some professional disneyland videos on youtube! I'll miss the old theme though.

  • amen to the high school musical island thing

  • I always felt Tom Sawyer Island was not what it could have been. Sadly, Tom Sawyer isn't that relevant anymore, but the Pirate theme is a good replacement. Thank God it didn't become, "High School Musical Island."

  • I agree with you , I am so happy high school musical will not be the new theme for this island

  • Oh god they were thinking about putting high school musical island?

  • oh yeah man...that would've been SOOOO dumb........

  • When we were there we saw no stunt show, we explored many parts of the caves and didn't see much animitronics.we saw where they were but they didnt seem to be doing anything. The band didn't sing much the entire time we were there.I hadn't been on the island in years and had only been over there a few times but I thought they should have done something with the old fort part.I always thought the it was the best part of the island and this was the perfect oportunity to bring it back /improve it.

  • i actually like it! i have never been to california, but im sure i will visit that!

  • did they change anything about fort wilderness besides the blacksmith?

  • lol, you were riding the canoes when you were recording the island werent you? i could head the castmember yelling in the background. heh, i love disneyland

  • Wow I haven't been since Bats' day '05. A lot has changed. I'm quite excited to go. I like the change up for Tom Sawyer's island. Seems to be a lot more going on now.

  • 07:08-07:12:Is that jack sparrow?

  • thank you for the update! I am definately going soon, I haven't been there since Nemo or this opened! Great job!

  • neat updates it still feels the same!cant wait to see it for myself!this month!

  • lilcrazy09,

yes the poppup head was pintel

and the hand with the eyeball was ragetti

  • Oh my gosh, I just saw something I haven't seen before. Last time I was on Pirate's Lair, my boyfriend saw the animatronic pirate in the cell, but he didn't speak or change like that! Next time I go, I'm definitely asking a cast member about that one.

  • is that pintel, the popup head at the end if it is then YAAAAAAY

  • yeah it is! =)

  • Well the caves looks too scary for me (but really nice effects). Like the pirate songs and the pirate theme.

  • boy, things were better when Walt Disney was around. i will miss the original stuff...

  • of course, walt himself never said D-land would never be compleate, so the pople are just doing as they are told.

  • I didn't know that guy at 5:18 talked.

  • This is so amazing, I'm going for my birthday/christmas, so I'm freakin psyched!

  • I like it alot better than the Tom Sawyer theme, hope WDW does the same with it's island eventually.

  • dude your the best

  • THE SAME RAFT!!!!

  • i have been visiting disneyland since 1964 when i was only 4 years old, and although there are many attractions i miss i like to think walt disney would be happy with the park as it is today. he himself said disneyland will never be completed as long as there is imagination left in the world. i think the park is as beautiful, and as fun to visit as it ever has been. just wish the kids today could have seen some of the older attractions that no longer exist.

  • As a fan of Pirates, I'd be drawn to the new attraction, but I'd feel a bit of sadness for the old island. I would've loved to romp around there for an hour or two.

  • me and my family used to play hide and go seek, boys vs girls. and those caves were the best hiding spot. now you can't really hide in them any more. I miss the old but I agree with mariecalendars. Kids these days don't like the old. which is sad.

  • if you are a true disneyland fan you know that on top of a tower on sleeping beaty's castle there is a poin that is not painted in gold. . . and walt wanted ir that way . . . because in his words " disneyland will never be finished" and sadly these kind of chages have to happen . . . because new generations will not find disneyland fun if it has land marks of something that they have no idea.we want disneyland to keep having as much success and these are the kinds of risks we have to take. I

  • You can meet Jack? KICK ASS!

  • I think they should have kept the Island as is. as much as I enjoyed the Pirates movies, they don't need any more pirates stuff. Tom Sawyer is a classic. It looks like fun, but, I mourn the day that movies come before literature and profit comes before history.

  • Maybe because I havent been one to see the older verisons of a lot of things and im sorry to say this too but that does look like an AWESOME piece of disneyland! ohh i cant wait to go and check it out next week!!

  • You did a great job of taping it. However, to me it seems sad that they are gradually dismantling everything that Walt did. The worst thing that they've done is to replace the Tiki Room at WDW. The previous show was a master piece. The bird that stars is the new show reminds me of a seven year old brat who is a disgrace to his parents. And then the have the "glee club birds" singing a 50's song in a tropical themed show. Walt would have fired people over this one had he been alive.

  • I have to say that if Tom Sawyer isn't by now a well known literary character then kids in schools all over North America need to become better educated. Everything at Disney can't all be about the pirates franchise. Oh well, at least for now the WDW version remains unscathed.

  • The name is "Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island"

The pirates even give credit to Tom Sawyer as the founding the island. And Tom And Huck's Treehouse is still around. So understand this; The Tom Sawyer aspect is still mentioned.

Walt wanted the park to be changed, and even in his day he loved to use his movie characters in the park.(Swiss Family Robinson anyone??)

  • I think the point was that marketing of a single movie has gotten out of hand, with overload. And Swiss Family Robinson was a book first, that is how

pervasive Disney has become, most of us assume Walt owns it all, as has happened with Milne's Hundred Acre Woods group.

You sound like a PR paid employee, just state your op wouldya?

Leave the PR to the publications, thanks.

  • Is the Fort still used now? How is that themed?

  • Nope. The Fort is gone.

  • They're rebuilding it in stone so it won't rot. No idea when it'll be up though.

  • the fort is not accessible its now for castmembers since it was rebuilded.

  • It looks like a great update, breathed new life into it! I hope they do it at WDW too!

Only thing is, the singer could've put a bit more of a piratey / West Country accent to it! Also it seems they're using the word "Savvy" in the wrong way, it means "Do you comprehend?"

  • Great Video! I loved how you edited your video it look cool. Great update and voice :) **Oh check out my Disney Video i Edited :) **************

  • I noticed when I was there that they had like half of it blocked of for cast members only, are they going to add more back there or is that just blocked permanity?

  • Its wrong that they changed Walt's vision. Sacrilige.

  • Guess what? Walt thought of the park as a living breathing thing, that could be improved and changed to keep from becoming stale. Its not sacrilege. And YOU are wrong. Walt wanted the park to change. Its sad and selfish of you to deny a deceased man his wish.

Besides, when Walt was alive and they were developing the island, pirates and treasure were considered.

And anyway, there are still references to Tom Sawyer.

  • Walt wanted it to be fun for families and kids, and Tom Sawyer although an American institute, is not as well known now, and the kids would enjoy a pirate themed area more. Walt would be pleased.

  • Tom Sawyer and Fort Wilderness were way better!

  • I'm kinda sad they changed it, I grew up on that island, use to play hide and seek and all sorts of stuff, I later worked on the island. It will always be Tom Sawyers Island to me.

  • It STILL is!!

Its called "Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island"

And they still acknowledge the Tom Sawyer character.

  • I like that pintel and raggetti were included in pirates lair!

  • I went there 2 days ago. It was pretty fun. I made a cute short clip on youtube if you want to check it out. Not quite as in depth as yours though. :)

  • Fantastic so gotta see that!

  • I love you whoever does these updates. For us Disneyland-addicts, its gold.

  • EEEEEEE I love pirates!!!!!!!!!! it's my favorite movie i am going to Disneyland in july i cant wait!

  • Why did they have to mess with Tom Sawyer's Island? They already had a Pirates ride (and hence, the movies ...). But you've done a great reporting job :) Next time we're at D-land, we'll check it out. Thanks!

  • Looks awesome. I cant wait to go on my 22nd birthday. Yo Ho Yo Ho A Pirates life for me!!

  • acostumbrando a los chamacos y los grandulones a lo macabro simpatico

  • i never been there but i cant wait to go there to see the dead mans chest

  • I've been going to Disneyland every few months my whole life and I rarely went to TSI, it bored me, especially as I got older, when I heard they were changing it to do with Pirates I was very excited, and I LOVED exploring and hearing Davy Jones around the island in certain places, the show is pretty fun too. But as some have said, I want to see more POTC characters running around.

  • Amen sista! I think pirates are the most awesome people in history i would've been one if i had been born in the time period.AND i love Jack, i hope the dude who dresses up like him is as excellent as Johnny Depp was.

  • This new island overlay is stupid and not well thought out. The effects are cheesy and very lazy. I hope you're all happy in 5 years when the whole fad is dead.

Does a Caribbean Island really make sense in the rivers of AMERICA?

Stupid stupid stupid stupid. Bring back Tom and Huck.

  • I sometimes think that too, but it's for the people's enjoyment, so they have to give to them.

  • You know what, Pirates rule and you suck so i hope everyone else is happy when YOU'RE dead in five years you a-wipe and NO the effects aren't cheesy that's awesome i'm sooooo gonna go on that island when i go there in July, and you know what Tom Sawyer island wasn't even that great......no one went to it, and now it rocks 'cause pirates are better thatn little boys running from an indian so go play in traffic

  • Does anyone know what the song is called that he is singing first?? its catchy for a pirate song.. Cant wait to see this in person it looks awsome!

  • It's the Davy Crockett theme from the old Disney TV show.

  • what is that thing at 5:16?

  • It's a full-size human figure in a dark room, enclosed in the cave system. As in the first Pirates movie, in the moonlight, the curse turns him skeletal.

  • animatronic?

  • its a pirate. looks like they mixed haunted mansion and pirates to get that thing. :) but thats what I think thats what it is. I havn't been to it yet.

  • I have to agree with some of the other comments - even though I wasn't too fond of this idea of retheming the island and taking away such a classic, they do seem to have done a commendable job of it and are using the space to provide further entertainment - and freeing up some much needed traffic area around the perimeter of the Rivers of America. And one day, who knows? Tom & Huck might come back again.

  • I really enjoyed your video, and as much as I hated seeing TSI go away I have to admit that Pirate's Lair isn't all that bad.

  • Well, I've been eagerly awaiting for something more to be tied into the PotC franchise at Disney in general for a long while and of course, it had to come into a replace a small portion of the park. A logical transition, that was long overdue but in a way, I'm sad to see Tom Sawyer Island go. But on some level it was due to happen. I've got a soft spot for the changes to the Island, but I was hoping for more of the characters from the movies and rides on the Island.
