yes you can hurt your self i got a cut from flipping mine from retracted to extended and i hit my arm right on the point and it has a razor sharp edge because it is made to stab into brain from the back of the head or u could go from the side of the throat and slash out cutting the jugular and the wind pipe in one slash. how is the folding karambit i herd allot r junk i got a fixed blade karambit made bu cold steal
"nature doesn't mess around" May your quote be immortalized with the other great quotes. I just ordered mine today, better be worth the hefty price...I have one Benchmade and I only justify that price because of the LifeSharp service and quality of reputation.
Can you demonstrate the wave feature as being removed from your pocket? Thanks! Good vid. I just ordered the Fox with Emerson wave feature not because it was cheaper, but because everyone seemed to be out of the Emerson.
yes, a good piece. what about the material (steel)? I have old knifes that are handforged from iron. The iron was made from iron ore. I hear a lot how today things like blades are made from bad materials. Do companies use old scrap iron and make new iron out of it? ...because some blades are bad. The material must be bad. But I am not talking about expensive blades/knives from Japan and Sweden.
@kiftua Emerson knives are made from 154cm which is a premium stainless steel from Crucible Metallurgy. It is similar to Japanese ATS-34. It is a good mix of hardness, edge retention, and ease of sharpening and maintenance. I'm sure Emerson gets his steel in sheets from Crucible. Almost all knife companies these days are using high quality stainless and carbon steels.
@macjmillsx : Thank you for this good answer! You got over there really good things. My father was buying Austrian knives for his work and we have also some Italian knives. But stainless steel blades in the my local stores are cheap and probably just "normal" and not exellent. Like a throwing knife FOX ROSTFREI brand for 15 EUR (420 steel).
I like their designs, I've just had too many problems with mine in the past. Bought a 2010 mini 7, 2 hours after getting it , while playing with it the thumb disc became lose? Went to tighten it and then screw head poped off and left the rest of the screw in the blade, didn't bother sending it in just sold it cheap. Had a friend with the exact same problem too. So i'm guessing they are using cheaper screws in 2010.. dissapointing. I'm sticking with Strider :D , never had a problem with them.
I'm waiting to hear in the news about someone trying to sneak one of those plastic/ fiberglass tactical knives that are on the market now. I wonder how many years in prison someone would have to serve for such a dumb stunt?
Try Angelo Collado (Kenpo) on YouTube for information on how to practise with a Karambit blade. Actual training is necessary but videos are a cool place to start.
Hi there-- I totally enjoyed your review, as I own one of these knives myself. I've purchased one of this particular brand, as well as a more traditional karambit crafted with hand-forged steel and Filipino redwood (which was a gift to my father).
I just wanted to point out-- as a cultural reference: In the Philippines, "karambit" is pronounced "kahRAHMbit" ("kah" like "Khan", with more emphasis on "RAHM", like "rum"). I tend to snicker at "ker-ram-bit", but not in a bad way. Good stuff!
if you need a karambit just to practice i would recommend the cold steel nightshade karambit it is good to practice with and if you had to use it you could but i would not recommend that. this has to be the best karambit on the market
The problem I have with getting a CS karambit is that Lynn Thompson has been quoted in various interviews and knife publications bashing the karambit and saying it was a worthless knife design.. now they are selling it and marketing it as being awesome.. If I get another karambit it will be a Strider PS karambit. The waved opening Emerson is a formidable knife by all accounts though!
@macjmillsx FIRST OF ALL I DONT DO WHAT I AM SAYING I EVEN DONT HAVE ONE OF THOSE "PLASTIC WEAPONS" but you can remove that ring and then you have a weapon that goes thru the detector
It was based off the natural concept of a tiger claw, you're right, and that makes it perfect for tearing into the backs of antelope as they run away from you. However for fighting against another human who is standing facing you and fighting back, sometimes with a knife of his own, I believe the double sided combat dagger to be the most effective design.
Interesting perspective. I know the dagger is an effective combat weapon, as 5-6 inches of penetration will cause shock and death.. but a karambit in the hands of a competent user can sever tendons and vital arteries in the blink of an eye.. I think the key is to practice and be comfortable and competent with any weapon/tool you may choose to employ to protect you life or a loved one's life.
I was gonna get a Harpy but I'm not big on the SS handle. I know there was a limited run of G10 Harpys but they are impossible to find. Truthfully I don't carry hawkbills too often.
Yeah I know what you mean. I used to carry them all the time, but now I carry my Harpy just every once in awhile. That being said, in the next several months there is going to be a run of Spyderhawks, which is a larger Harpy, with FRN handles
From what I have read and learned from the silat guys in my kali class, the karambit was originally meant to be your last line of defense. So after you have lost your long pole, machete/sword, sticks, knives, and whatever, you whip out your karambit for very close-quarters combat. In head-to-head combat dagger, I would much rather have a dagger then a karambit (or even a good piece of rattan), just for the reach, but I have seen people do some amazing things with those little guys. Do want.
EDC means Every Day Carry. I prefer a knife that has a good balance of utility, self defense, rugged, and durable. The karambit can be used in that role for most tasks, but it is a thin tip that would be no good if you needed to pry anything. The SnG is just well rounded and functional, hence every day carry.
Thanks! I bought mine directly from EKI so it was a little more expensive than it would have been from a reseller. You can expect to pay about $150-$250 for a new one depending on where you get it.
Nice video. I don't know what kind of still camera you have, but if it's possible - could you take some close up pictures and post them on a site like flickr or photobucket and post the link in the info? That would be awesome!
Most people will back down if you pull out any form of weapon, but if they know how to perform CQC they will find a way to disarm you, not even necessarily directed towards the actual weapon itself, but good review :D
Thank you! I agree with you, training and preparedness as well as comfort using whichever tool you choose to protect yourself or others is the key to surviving a potential threatening situation.
Is it a high quality reliable knife ?

I think they put a steel ring in the handle for legal reasons so you can't pass through a metal detector with the weapon.

You can, the ring is easily removable and other than that it's just fiberglass and plastic.

It is a very effective tool considering how small it is. It's modeled after one of the most efficient designs in nature: the tiger claw.
