you have to play sonic three 20 times.. an easy way to do this is to start a game exit and come back in.. rinse and repeat 20 times and u have unlocked sonic 3 and knuckles witout playing thru the game 20 times which wud be very boring

Yes, they did that to keep continuity within the Japanese and American games. Dr. Eggma was also called Robotnik in the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure 1, I believe, just like the way he is in the American version.

Eggman is the japanese name. They changed it from the english translated name of "robotnik". But in the Archie comics, for the sake of continuity, kept it as just his nickname.
