@mmmmbert Hot Swapping of a CPU has been possible technology in enterprise/server environments for many years, although it usually will require you restarting the OS, but not always.
@mmmmbert Hot swapping CPUs is possible, just very uncommon. First step is to disable the entire node, then power down the CPU riser board ( usually two CPUs ). Swap with new CPU Riser board and new CPUs for entire node. Re-enable node.
It is much like distributed computing - except inside 'one' machine.
The trick is that each CPU in the node had to match, you could not upgrade in this manner, merely replace a faulty chip or fan. I'm in the biz & I've seen it once - 15 years ago
its all personel opinion but the facts are that 32bit (mostly intel) are good for up to about 4gbs of ram, 64bit (AMD) can basicly go to 128 gbs of ram and 64 bit as a high bit bandwith for bits and bytes
Wether a CPU is made by AMD or Intel doesn't determine whether its 64 or 32Bit. Intel Xeons, Pentium IVs and up, and almost all Core 2 chips are 64bit capable. AMD and Intel are just two different brands. AMD tend to be cheaper, whereas Intel tend to have a slight power advantage. 32Bit CPUs can generally use up to 3.5Gb of RAM, though, up to 4Gb can be used. However, your just as well off to use a 64bit CPU in that case
What a nice way to ruin your expensive chip. Always replace your heatsink grease because re-using dried out compound results in air bubbles and reduced heat transfer, this can result in heat buildup and burn up your chip.
you don't use a screw driver on HP AMD servers either, that's some generic box/board. And real soon I can drop a 6core istanbul chip in to the same socket, good luck with your xeons.
There is no way that you can change both processors and the bios chip in 5 mintues. They were able to do that because the serve wasn't in the rack and the cover was already off.

those fans are extremely load you need to take them down from 100% to about 60 to 70%
pyromaniac171 1 year ago
@pyromaniac171 The fans are at 100% because they detected that the door is removed. When you replace the door, it gets much quieter..

Why do you run Windows on a server? LOL!
First you gonna shut it down?
Linux has hot-swap, you can replace the CPU while its still running.

lol he has to use a screw driver. I never used a screw driver on the hp servers we deliver with xeon.
