As an American musician I have no more than a basic technical appreciation of Carnatic music, but have loved listening to it since first hearing a recording of Balachander about 45 years ago. In recent years I have discovered the music of Rajaswari and she has become a very great favorite. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful performance with us!
yes she is the grand daughter of karaikudi Samba siva Iyer. Her brother is Dr.Karaikudi subramanyam. Daughter srividya is a veena player, son sundararajan is a great flautist.....
Thanks. In addition to being Professor of Botany and Head of the Dept of Botany at Lady Doak College, Madurai. I was also in charge of the Fine Art's club. I invited Subramanyam to give a performace. I have fond memories of his superb performance. The one that is loaded here of his performance is not audible, I came to the USA for my Ph. D. Living in the USA I did not get to listen to any of my favorite Vina players. Thank you all for posting their concerts on You Tube.
Is she not the grand daughter of karaikudi Samba siva Iyer? J heve listned to her brother too. He was a lecturer in madurai. Samba siva Iyer was one of my uncle;s patients in Perambur.,long long time ago.
oh what a performance! excellent control on the instrument. I would say it was a power packed performance. Felt even bad when I learnt that she successfully accomplished the responsibility of carrying the sampradaaya from 8 th generation to 9th and then transferring to next. Now a days we find very few such people.
Sad to know her demise :( really a great loss for the Veena fraternity.

We are very sorry to let you all know that our mother, Smt. Raajeswari Padmanabhan passed away on Aug 15, 2008. Thanks a ton for loading her videos here for the world to see.
Her sons - SundarRajan Padmanabhan, Maheshwaran Padmanabhan and
Like most vainikas, they sang while playing the instrument. Taanam is a specialty of this tradition and the brothers excelled in it. Rajeswari Padmanabhan trained with Sambasiva Iyer for her first fourteen years. She further contributed to the traditional repertoire considerably, especially with her association with Mysore Vasudeevachar, and also further refined the technical aspects of performing on the instrument without deviating from the Karaikudi baani..
The Karaikudi Bani From the Tanjavur tradition emerged another highly regarded baani (style) from the Karaikudi family. Two representatives, brothers Subbarama Iyer and Sambasiva Iyer, were considered to be incredible veena performers at the turn of the century. They usually performed together and were considered to be very mature and serious musicians. The elder brother, Subbarama Iyer, held the Veena vertical (no longer practiced) and Sambasiva Iyer held in the way we see it held today.
A musician par excellence. What a laya control!

Beautiful sound! The rather close microphone don´t disturb it. No contact microphones?

The JVC "Music of the Veena II" disc is excellent. Does anyone know any other recordings with Padmanabhan?

She happens to be the 9th genaration of veena player, who is a direct disciple of her grandfather Shri Sambasiva Iyer.
Her daughter, Sreevidhya Chandramouli, continues the tradition.
