Thanks for sharing this video. He is certainly more intelligent than who ever it was that says "I got the cure for autism", lol. I sure hope my 3 year old Nephew, who does in fact have autism, will be able to speak clearly soon like Derby does right now. Unfortunately my nephew does not really talk but i've been seeing good eye contact from him, so hopefully that's a sign that he will eventually learn communication.
Kudos to you guys as parents and as advocates for our new generation of righteous children. We are all products of our environment and these children are a product of God's response to this environment. A world close to nuclear warfare and what-not, what is a better way to rid the world of this complete bullcrap, than to send in an army of philosophers into homes of love and warmth. Plus, i would easily been diagnosed as having asperger's as a child, people just never understood me completely.
Way to go Derby! I have high functioning autism, and while I need certain resources and compensation skills (for instance, I'm 23 years old, but my mom makes doctor appointments for me because I go into a panic attack when I'm on the phone) I do not need a cure.
A cure would mean losing the benefits as well. You sometimes have to take the bad with the good. For instance, I have an amazing audio memory. I can memorize songs after listening only once or twice.
I have no idea about autistic children, hence watching this and im reading on it for a project. But this video does not show any bvious autism to me ;(
Man, that was sooo nice. Your son is awesome. And i loved your attitude as well. Hope my son use our words to, one day, express himself a bit better in this insane world that we live. Hes 4 and the diagnostic its been made. We're going for a second opinion. But 4 now, he have ''low fun autism'', but actually he uses some words correctly. But i am feeling a better man. Probably were watching something stupid and useless now if that didnt happened. God bless you and your family.
Nurses, doctors, attorneys, govt. employees, Big Pharma & stockholders do not want to concede that vax= poison shots cause autism & other serious disease. Deny, deny. Delay, delay. What about Hannah Poling case where govt. awarded parents 1.5 million 4 autism. Court continued to twist, contort, spin, obfuscate with ruling: "vax didn't cause Hannah's autism- the condition just 'resulted' from the vax.' Incoherent. Illogical. Unreasoning. The insane are in charge & children suffer needlessly.
What a lovely boy. I hope he is doing well. Being different can be hard. It took me years to come to embrace my own 'disability' (ADHD) so it's wonderful to hear him say he doesn't want to change. I hope that no one makes him feel like he has something wrong with him.
What a beautiful well spoken boy! In my house, we also treat Autism as a gift...At an intervention in my sons grade 4 class, I was talking about his "superman hearing" and other special gifts he has. My son said, he felt bad for the other kids without Autism, who didn't get special powers :) But that he would accept them anyway the way they were!!!!! Keep doing what you're doing. You can see a video I posted of him when he was 7 (he is 11 now).
What a wise child. There is a spectrum & as many different places on that spectrum as there are people. There are so many gifts as well! My son has this
Vaccines do not "cause" autism, nor "poison" children; people need to get facts, all of them. One doctor tried to say vaccinations caused these problems & he was proved to be a complete fraud. He lost his license to practice in England. Unfortunately, too many people still believe the lies. If you have problems speaking find someone to help you.
I also have a 7 year old son with autism. I think it's awesome that you are teaching your son to except himself for who he is. My son makes me laugh on a daily basis and has really shown me what life is really about. I won't change one thing about him.
@xBlackEditionx Why would you bother to comment on it? Because you have no life, and nothing better to do. You would need dental work if I caught you in public.
My 7 year old son is on the spectrum, and considered high functioning but would not be able to carry on a conversation like that. We have spent about $150k - $200k in the last 3 years on therapy. In my own experience, I have clearly seen the stigma of labeling a child autistic, whether it is in school or in social settings. I have seen kids who are not even on the spectrum carry on as if they were.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I believe my 33 month old grandson is autistic. His mom (my daughter) is deployed in Afghanistan and her husband and I are taking care of him. When she gets home, we have decided to have him tested. Thank you. I had so many misconceptions about autism. Thank you.
My daughter is on the spectrum. Last year she tried to sell books on Amazon but was late shipping the books. They permanately deleted her account. However, they have deleted MY account, her mother just after a week that I created it this August. They told me "do not bother writing back". They punish an entire household. Do NOT use Amazon. They also refuse to reimburse me for the shipping I paid for. I told them about ASD and they didn't care. I have followed all Amazon rules.
Your son is amazing, v. smart esp. at so young an age. He is blessed to have a father like you, in light of what SOME parents can be like (re: the woman in the video).
Love the video. My 6-year-old boy is autistic. I adore him the way he is, and want him to feel that way about himself, too, as he grows up. Thanks for posting this.
I've come to a point where I don't dare to be myself, I don't speak at all with people, I just smile or make facial expressions and sometimes my facial expressions do not match my inner expressions! It's frustrating because I don't know how to get people to understand me anymore, I can't use speech because it just doesn't go hand in hand with my body and facial expressions:( someone pls help me! I show no expression on my face when I talk these days......:(
Hippocratic oath= I swear by Apollo the healer & take witness to all other gods that I will NEVER EVER harm anyone in practice of medicine.. Now- where's the baby in 4 healthy baby visit? Hush little baby, don't U cry, Doc's gona inject U with formaldehyde. If that poison don't keep U sick, Doc's gona try another trick.. (Also includes aborted fetal tissue & aluminum in witch's brew) English word "Pharmacy" comes from Greek "Pharmakeia means witchcraft, poison, sorcery. Things remain same
I am a 12 year old with autism and Im just like any other kid. I get pretty good grades at school, I like to hang out with my friends, Im awesome at shooting baskets when I play B ball, and I know most other kids with autism doesn't behave or act right , but i'm a very kind and honest layed back kind of person even though i have autism.
I love this. It's our job as parents to instill the same sense of pride in our autistic children as we do for our non-autistic children. My 6 year old son is on the road to understanding his differences now and he knows that he is special. He's a gift. Every child should feel that way.
Your son communicates *very* well! I can tell by the way you and him communicate that you two must be very, very close. It's great to see parents raising their children right - especially when having to work with something along the lines of autism. Having an autistic cousin, I can somewhat relate to the amount of patience, positive reinforcement, and unconditional love it takes.
Hope everything continues to go well. Best wishes!
its also makes me sad that most autistic videos comments are blocked because of very immature ignorant people who arnt smart enough to watch a video explaining this condition but they take the time to watch a video of someone with autism i think autistic people have great potential as human beings.
wow watching these kids with autism blows my mind makes me want to get a job working with people with autism they are so peaceful and i think its sad how people misinterpret autistic people because they are not aware of the condition " not sickness" because like this young man said its not a sickness he doesn't want to be cured because he's perfectly fine
He responds and communicates VERY well. He can hardly be labeled to have a "disability". Real Autism means practically NO communication skills. Almost NO eye contact. Never having a prolonged conversation. Derby probably has a mild form of Aspergers. Sensory overlead can be an advantage once it is understood.
@MYSTAND111 He doesn't have autism lite. Communication is one aspect of autism on a wide spectrum. Social and sensory are other aspects on the spectrum. I agree to some extent when saying disability. For him in certain areas, he has extreme weakness. Without much help, it is not a level playing field for him.....in that regard, it is a disability. He is working hard to overcome his personal obstacles and we are helping him as best we can.
@darrenmcnulty you are doing a great job. Not everyone understands autism. Each child is different. Social skills are difficult. They get fraustrated easily. Understanding is difficult. And no eye contact is a myth, some children cant talk or communicate at all.others take things litterally. Example catch a bus to my son would mean being super human. Yes i have two lovely autistic children.
You're mistaken, my son is a lot like this beautiful boy. He's very articulate, and he's still autistic, he has Aspergers which is a mild, high functioning form of autism. Those that cannot look anyone in the eye, and can't verbally communicate are those that are more severe. Autism comes in levels. Educate yourself before speaking about what you don't know. Thank you.
Do you understand that the Autism Spectrum is a "Spectrum" with no two people the same? If you have met one person with Autism you have met ONE person with Autism. No two are alike.
Autism - "The difference between high-functioning and low-functioning is that high-functioning means your deficits are ignored, and low-functioning means your assets are ignored." ~ Laura Tisoncik
what utter nonsense. just because a child can communicate verbally doesn't mean that he's not autistic. this kind of mentality is part of the problem. it's why so many children who need services can't get them. sheesh! think before you type.
@MYSTAND111 How can you say that he hardly has a disability?Aspergers is a form of Autism.I am 27 I have Aspergers syndrome. Its a disability.I can't deal with unexpected situations because I loose my rhythm. I can't do group conversations because its hard for me to understand when people make a joke or are serious. I am working everyday to understand how to act, to create protocols for every situation. It is autism and it is a disability. we can learn to deal with it. but it is what it is.
@MYSTAND111 You aparently know very little of of development disabilities. Let me give you some information on it. Autism is under the PDD umbrella, This PDD Umbrella is a large aray of Autism Spectrum Disorders. and no real Autism does not practically mean No communication. There are different levels. My son was diagnosed by a neurologist. Did you know my son who is 9 by the way speaks fine but is socialy awkward and has accidents daily. Know more before you speak.
If our children did not have autism we would just test and treat them, or they could tell us what's wrong. My son is almost 7. He can't communicate and is not potty trained but he is a funny guy. We couldn't tell that about him before the lead started coming out. We didn't know him he was always crying in pain, biting himself, punching his head. Nothing helped. He has stopped punching and is starting to use the potty. He interacts Does he deserve to get well autistic or not? As a human being?
My parents respond to my younger brother's moaning (which happens when my dad is angry, as a result of my dad hitting things and breaking stuff) by yelling, clapping their hands, and attempting to shut him up. As someone with AS, I'm coming to understand exactly WHY he is upset, and exactly WHY he responds with stimming and shaking and "head-banging." (he is not actually banging his head against anything; he is rocking very violently.)
I don't think people want to cure the "autism" at all. I think they want to help a percentage of kids who happen to have autism recover from a physical illness they aquired. Neurotypical kids and kids with autism have a chance of having these same medical illnesses. my son has lead poisoning and is using a natural chelator, it is not taking his autism away, just the SIB's, stomach pains, extreme anxiety things most kids don't have but a rare few do.
@darrenmcnulty Thanks for the luck, recently my son has not been able to have a BM on his own, I started taking him in for weekly colonics, thursday he had marked improvement. Friday he had another and he was like a different child after. The ND called me to tell me that she found a metal shard in my son's poo. I will have it tested, but since this he is improving rapidly, still has "autism" but not the constant stomach pain and etc. Some children may be misdiagnosed, or have comorbid conditions
My Son Titus is Autistic and my Son Evin has Aspergers. They are the most awesome little boys on the planet. I am so incredibly proud of them. They are so smart, and are such sweet boys. They are both on the mild end of the spectrum, and even though the signs showed up earlier in Titus, you would not know today that there is anything different about him. You can see several videos of him on my page, quoting scriptures that he learned in school. Unlike other kids in his class, he doesn't forget.
Both my sons have aspergers and I wouldn't change them for the world. I educate myself, and my husband and I always try new things to work with our kids, to guide and support them. They have made great progress, with lots of consistency, love, patience, and understanding. You just take it day by day.
I don't see my sons Autism as bad. I wouldn't change him for the world. He is special and unique in his own way and if he was changed than he wouldn't be my special little man anymore. He and his siblings don't want him to change they like him the way he is. He is very smart he just has his quirks that he does or his things that bother him. Everyone loves him and thinks he's great and so does he. If he was more severe i would get him help but he does just fine with his speech class.
@Joeymaclover Derby had trouble with speech too. For years, he couldn't answer a question that began with a "W". You wouldn't know it if you talked to him today.
@darrenmcnulty my autistic son has trouble with speech also, but he is improving everyday! i hope he progresses like derby, my son is currently 5. what speech challenges did derby encounter and how did u help him?
@jenndawg000 It depends on the specifics of your son. For mine, it was cognition. I worked closely with him on one question and reinforced it with repetition. An example would be a "who" question.....first I required only a name in response. We expanded later with additional rhetoric and detail. We did one type of question a day with many breaks I recall. Find a comfortable place with few distractions if you try it. He is still improving....we use his strengths as much as we can.
this child means he will not be himself anymore and he will not be recodnised as he is so he says no.people look for a cure when there typical NT<s they feel like a fish out of a pond.so thats why they say what they do.we are not sameness and that is a problem for the so us aspies or auties get a bad press..jeff
Why would you want to cure him , there is nothing wrong with him. These people so quick to use medication to "cure" their childrens Autism is simply the easy way out for them .LOl, never a more stupid comment than Austism is like cancer and should be cured ,,, get a brain you moron
Even though he has autism, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with him...So confident and inspiring to listen to him. A genius speaking there. His parents have everything to be pround of such a lovely boy. Nice listening to him.
Your child does not speak for mine, mine cannot speak, so yes, we of course want to treat him. This child is brainwashed. Autism is a sickness like cancer, we love our child and he deserves to get the best treatment available. Many of us with more severe children didn't hardly ever see a smile until we started biomedical treatment and chelation. It works, why not try to get your whole brain back in use and not just use a little portion of it?
@mom2ericnb He's not brainwashed. He's a member of a family of proponents for neurodiversity. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that! The biggest problem for people with autism is ignorance. I nurture my children in ways that help them learn to deal with a hostile world. I am not "fighting" an integral part of their beings with torturous "treatments." Your child is already a whole person, but you come across as someone who doesn't appreciate him for who he is. That is sad to me.
@mom2ericnb you are extremely misinformed. Autism is not a sickness like cancer, and this little boy is not brainwashed. He is answering for himself and seems to have a very supportive family. Just because your child might be a bit more severe with their Autism than Derby, that does not give you the right to disrespect him. I hope your have success in treatment for your child and you might consider some support groups because you obviously have issues.

@mom2ericnb I have 2 sons with aspergers, so I thought I would check on the chelation therapy you are talking about. To sum up what the mayo clinic website said.: Chelation treatment for autism, has been disproved. It was suggested when they thought mercury from vaccines caused autism (which has been disproved). It also stated that chelation therapy can be associated with serious side effects, including potentially fatal liver and kidney damage. I hope you researched the risks.
I aggree with with him yes it would be nice for people to cure autism but if a kid i happy with himself being autistic that is their choice sure they havent been introduced to the wider world but hell its better than putting them putting them through the hell of medical treatments at such a young age when at that young age they are seen by others as normal because children dont act to differently to someone with autism its only in later stages that it takes affect.
@klett69 I think what you are trying to say is that you're sick of labels and not "sick of definitions". The English language has evolved from numerous other languages over the centuries including Latin. From reading a few definitions, Calx came from the Latin khalix, denoting a calcified materials. Oxide is a binary compound of an element with oxygen so is a far less vague definition - more accurate and less confusing I'd say. I hope this helps you and thanks for dropping by.
it is not only vaccines, but also any other "poisoning event" in the life of newborn and children, from food, from environment, from cleansing products, from clothes, from toys, etc...
It is great he does not feel anything is wrong with him. I think seeking for a "cure" is okay for future generations but all kids in the present should "train". It's just like anybody who has any kind of disability. With proper training and effort, these abilities develop. You can develop just about any skill or intelligence. For some it is more difficult, but not impossible. You just need to be able to know how to reach in the right way.
@OperaNotes There isn't anything wrong with him....why should he feel that there is?
"training" is for dogs or mindless repetitive tricks - "cures" are for sick people. However, we are helping him these days to develop his skill-set. I do believe your intent was meant to be positive and I appreciate your comments but understand although there are social/communication gaps, many autistics are capable of greater creative talents beyond that of a typical person. Intelligence cannot be trained.
@darrenmcnulty Well, I disagree that intelligence cannot be trained. True, there is a certain level that is improbable to reach but not impossible. From what I understand, most autistic children are geniuses and have an impeccable intelligence concerning things that are abstract to others but they lack in social interaction intelligence. But then again, so does the shy child. Does this mean these children can never grow to be sociable and interactive people? Of course not. They may even (cntd)
@OperaNotes (ctnd) evolve to be the most extroverted of all people. The most empathic and sociable. There are no rules when it comes to people. Limitations are only obstacles. Just like your child can do anything, so can anybody else's. Training is like practising the piano. Do dogs do this? Heck, maybe...
Training is studying, dancing, sports, mathematics, economics, psychology... These things shape the long term brain and increase intelligence.
@OperaNotes Derby is both sociable and interactive but not in a typical way. Perhaps his EQ isn't typical but I'm sure if Albert Einstein were around, you would have an argument whether EQ is even a sign of intelligence. However, Derby's IQ and AQ are substantial.
Intelligence is the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge; the faculty of thought and reason; and the superior powers of mind by definition and training is to make proficient with specialized instruction....look up definitions
@darrenmcnulty I consider you to be intelligent parents who would never use a difference as a reason why something in your son's life should make him inferior to others. However I also think you are quick to judge people. You take other people's opinion as a threat instead of as a different point of view. You also take objective arguments as a direct personal attack.
The long term brain remembers only what info sticks to previous knowledge. The more it learns, the more it can learn.
@OperaNotes Thanks for your opinion. However, unless you're a doctor that specializes in this sort of thing, your unsolicited viewpoint means very little.
First you say...
"These claims are not opinions. They are facts."
...and then say....
"You take other people's opinion as a threat instead of as a different point of view....You also take objective arguments as a direct personal attack."
You presented your opinion as fact and then judge - how typical. I'm not buying what you're selling.
@darrenmcnulty Well, I am glad we had this discussion. It definitely broadened my point of view. Thank you.
And yes, I am not a doctor. Not yet anyway. One of the fields I study are the behavioural sciences. Emotions, mostly. Observing and interpreting body language, tones, word usages, approaches... The work of Dr Paul Ekman and others.
He is amazing. I highly recommend his work if you are interested in that sort of thing.
@OperaNotes I am interested so thanks for the link. Since we're name dropping doctors, I'd like to give props to Peter Szatmari for coming out with his latest study on autism and the underlying connections to its cause. Apparently it was the biggest study of its kind and was concluded only recently. Behavior is not always monkey see, monkey do....in the case of autism, it may be a response to sensory.
@darrenmcnulty Of course, behaviours are triggered by many things. Environment, genetics, senses... Even evolutionary, meaning some behaviours are humanly universal. It is just so fascinating the way people are! Thanks for the reference. I will look into his work. Have a great day!
My son has aspergers, too. He is also seven ("and three quarters" he always adds). He is extremely bright, as are many with HFA. Many grow up to become the "nerds," who built these computers we are all communicating with. Sometimes I feel like we are all living in those silly 80's Revenge of the Nerds movies. You know, where all the NT's are trying their hardest to get rid of us. Well, sorry to say, but it's not that easy. Not every aspie is diagnosed, and we are still reproducing. (Evil laugh)
For all people who want to have a go at me... thats fine. I take it with a grain of fucking salt. These people who push their kids to say... I dont want my autism to go away... blah blah blah... in my opinion are arseholes. Give a thought of people with actual AUTISM, and who cannot talk for christs sake!!!! Dont teach your aspergers kids to preech to others on the spectrum, that there should be NO cure! Dont bring your smart kids up, to tell us "lower level people' that they are normal.
@debbieh1100 My son has never said that you are a "lower level" person - however, if I let him read your words, he may be convinced otherwise in your particular case.
Sadly, you came here to try and discredit a 7 year old child and father using cursive, misspelled, hateful language. How about you "preech" to your high school english teacher of what a poor job was done giving you basic language skills.
As for cures, I pray that you are NOT the ideal result of any future autism antidote! LOL.
@darrenmcnulty from an outside perspective, she's right, minus the mean words.
You should know your child is a victim of the governments bullshit chemicals....it's not fair and there some day will be a cure, in saying that, we are all in a state of constantly being dumbed down with chemicals and mind control from TV and our so-called Authority figures (doctors, mainstream 'scientists' etc)
The truth is what your 7 year old deserves! and it WILL help him see that ALL are equal, me, you, him all
@darrenmcnulty Also, Yo u have to realise that your body works like a computer, your soul gives it a signal to do something, the body reacts accordingly, only our perspective is from the inside of the computer.
The true cause of all of these problems is that they are trying to block us off from our souls gradually.
the point is, any problems your child is having with any natural function of the body that is to do with a disability, is caused by the very ones who are going to tell you it normal
@41312111 I understand what you are saying but that theory is just that - a theory, sorry. Yes, he has heard the truth....he possesses both ability and disability....don't we all to some varied level?
He is only a "victim" of being misunderstood as most autistics. I'm guessing you mean well but there is much research going on these days by many good people. Look up Dr. Peter Szatmari.
@darrenmcnulty P.S. I'm not trying to be negative or rude, i just think that once you both realise that there is more to live than this body, however it acts/looks/feels, there is more past that, and everyone has an equal share of energy as a soul, and that's what matters.
"Autism needs a cure. Aspergers should be wiped off the spectrum for this reason. People like you who have it easy with a child at 7 years of age who can talk. Well lucky YOU! Your child does not struggle with anything obviously. Think about those who need a cure, and stop thinking of yourself!"
I have decided to post your other bitter comment to show people what you're all about.
Hello Jules, you have misread a comment so allow me to clear it up. I put the quotation marks on a previous comment to show what debbieh100 had originally posted - the same person decided to delete their angry post but I thought to share the copy I was sent.....those are NOT my words. I even wrote "quote" above the comment.
This is a video made by me and my son. He wanted to express himself and I supported him in doing so.
well you were saying his dad was thinkin about himslel wel why is that ??
how did you jump that conclusion
and maybey the kids case of ausperger s not as bad as some other kids so he doesnt need a cure like he says himself the kid is confortble with his autism and he has contacts with class mates so if his dad talks to him it probely will go over when hes like 15 - 20 it will never be TOTaly over but not noticeble or bothering over
That kid does not stuggle with eye contact, infact he doesnt struggle with anything. A 7 year old, who can sit still and talk this well, should not be telling others that Autism is a good thing. I'm sick to death of people like you, who have it easy with your children...telling others there should not be a cure. This is why Aspergers should have a name of its own and be wiped from the spectrum for good. Lets hope for a cure for those who cannot speak and for the parents who need one.
@debbieh1100 He "should not be telling others" anything according to you. Apparently he has no right to speak because he "doesn't struggle with anything" in your opinion....correct?
How about we wipe you from the spectrum of asinine comments.
I think it is wonderful that you are teaching your son to be comfortable with who he is! my son is also autistic and is comfortable with who he is because thats all he knows - he knows himself!
your son seems like a normal smart child to me but i do think there should be a cure for this just for people to have a choice to have the cure or not but i dont understand autism my daughter is adhd but i to think there is more to it so i have her going to counclera phyciatrist and social worker to figure her out so she can have better in life and i can understand her a bit better she is very sweet but yet so angery but i love her regardless dad your doing good he loves himself the way he is<3
I agree that autism isn't a sickness! I find autistic people completely beautiful!
They have something that radiates in them. They are extra special individuals and personally I feel that the only reason people ever see something "wrong" with them is because they are afraid of just how amazing they truly are.
Derby is very wise! My husband even said that those with autism are the normal ones and those without autism are the ones that have problems. How did you explain to Derby that he has autism? Autism=giftedness+++
@danny313ful I trust that you are happy in your work....how fortunate. Derby has skills and continues to improve on his ability...the video was made when he was seven and yet you don't give him a chance...your message is bleak and negative. Your opinion is not required - thanks for stopping by.
@darrenmcnulty Sorry if my post sounded insulting. I did not mean for it to come across that way. Certainly people on the autism spectrum can do great things with their lives and I hope the best for your son. I am just disagreeing with your opinion that autism doesn't need a cure. Certainly those with autism would greatly appreciate if they could more effectively communicate with others and live a more well-rounded, socially satisfying life.
That video depicts his opinion and not mine and he deserves to be heard regardless of what we both think - his words need to be considered. He loves his life, loves who he is and has personal goals. As a parent, I'm happy how he's doing but recognize his weak areas pose deficit in society. What we both consider being "well-rounded" and "socially satisfying" has no appeal to him. He doesn't like the prospect of being cured of his individuality and association.
@danny313ful when he grows up and enters the working field, odds are that he'll be extremely successful. That will be because he's had all his childhood with supportive parents who have helped him to understand his condition.
@danny313ful If you make them aware of their strengths and limitations, they can be extremely sucessful. Once my sons are interested in something, they learn everything about it, and retain that information. They both excel academically, especially in reading, math, and science. I am not sure how you think they can cure how the brain is wired?
@Krippschick I never said that they couldn't be "successful". Success has different meanings anyway. I am just saying that having autism makes living life more difficult both in social settings and at the job. I don't know how scientists will be able to cure autism but I have faith that they will in the future. The better question is, if a cure was available, why would a parent who cares about their child choose not to give it to them when it would make both of their lives easier.
@danny313ful No aspergers kid is exactly the same, they all have similiarities of course. I guess if it would help with negative behaviors, for them to be able to read people and connect, that would be good. But would the cure also make them lose their apparent ability to retain and recall vast amounts of information, or change their total personality, so they are not the same person. It would be a difficult decision, and if they are happy with themselves, I am not sure what I would do.
Almost 40,000 at this point. I never thought we'd get more than a hundred when we made it. He's almost ten now and loves his life. Recently, he has learned to make armpit farts......a tribute to OT.
@darrenmcnulty Wow, time for a new video. Any chance? Would love to see him at 10. Glad he's acquired some impressive skills. lol Great job parenting by the way! It goes a long way. :) Blessings.
Fantastic job Derby!!! Its great that you get to express your feelings and thoughts. Its great to hear from kids themselves and how they feel about their own lives. Again great job Derby !!!!!
Others, I think its reasonable to respect this young mans feelings and thoughts. I think people who say, "lets find a cure" should also respect that there are those on the spectrum who are hurt by those comments.
This was great to see. My oldest son who is 6 is high functioning Autistic/ Aspergers. I wouldn't change who he is for the world. He is the most loving, sweetest boy that God could have blessed me with, and God doesn't make mistakes. These kids are made this way for a reason. I love me son who happens to be Autistic. :)
Yes, they really feel different; to deny this feeling is a HUGE mistake for us, like parents. they CANNOT understand us, and all the negative comments are made by stupid people which have no idea about autism disorders. Amazing movie. Good luck, Derby!

MYSTAND111 1 year ago
@MYSTAND111 He doesn't have autism lite. Communication is one aspect of autism on a wide spectrum. Social and sensory are other aspects on the spectrum. I agree to some extent when saying disability. For him in certain areas, he has extreme weakness. Without much help, it is not a level playing field for him.....in that regard, it is a disability. He is working hard to overcome his personal obstacles and we are helping him as best we can.
darrenmcnulty 1 year ago 9

Your description "autism lite" = asperger's syndrome
I think I let my mouth slip too much sometimes.

jjovereats 10 months ago
@darrenmcnulty you are doing a great job. Not everyone understands autism. Each child is different. Social skills are difficult. They get fraustrated easily. Understanding is difficult. And no eye contact is a myth, some children cant talk or communicate at all.others take things litterally. Example catch a bus to my son would mean being super human. Yes i have two lovely autistic children.
proudmotherable 3 weeks ago
@MYSTAND111
Thank you.
Mercurychyld1 5 months ago 11
@MYSTAND111
"Real Autism"? Seriously?
Do you understand that the Autism Spectrum is a "Spectrum" with no two people the same? If you have met one person with Autism you have met ONE person with Autism. No two are alike.

what utter nonsense. just because a child can communicate verbally doesn't mean that he's not autistic. this kind of mentality is part of the problem. it's why so many children who need services can't get them. sheesh! think before you type.
saddylicious 5 months ago

@CJEB4 I know this comment is old, but...
Scared; not sick.

CJEB4 1 year ago
@CJEB4 Lead poisoning is not autism. Good luck with the treatments anyway.

Some children may be misdiagnosed, or have comorbid conditions

jenndawg000 1 year ago
@jenndawg000 It depends on the specifics of your son. For mine, it was cognition. I worked closely with him on one question and reinforced it with repetition. An example would be a "who" question.....first I required only a name in response. We expanded later with additional rhetoric and detail. We did one type of question a day with many breaks I recall. Find a comfortable place with few distractions if you try it. He is still improving....we use his strengths as much as we can.

It works, why not try to get your whole brain back in use and not just use a little portion of it?
mom2ericnb 1 year ago
@mom2ericnb "why not try to get your whole brain back in use"
LOL....I agree wholeheartedly....let me know when you get yours and we can have a civil discussion about it.
darrenmcnulty 1 year ago

Looks like you are doing just that with your kid.
OperaNotes 1 year ago
@OperaNotes There isn't anything wrong with him....why should he feel that there is?
"training" is for dogs or mindless repetitive tricks - "cures" are for sick people. However, we are helping him these days to develop his skill-set. I do believe your intent was meant to be positive and I appreciate your comments but understand although there are social/communication gaps, many autistics are capable of greater creative talents beyond that of a typical person. Intelligence cannot be trained.
darrenmcnulty 1 year ago
@darrenmcnulty Well, I disagree that intelligence cannot be trained. True, there is a certain level that is improbable to reach but not impossible. From what I understand, most autistic children are geniuses and have an impeccable intelligence concerning things that are abstract to others but they lack in social interaction intelligence. But then again, so does the shy child. Does this mean these children can never grow to be sociable and interactive people? Of course not. They may even (cntd)
OperaNotes 1 year ago
@OperaNotes (ctnd) evolve to be the most extroverted of all people. The most empathic and sociable. There are no rules when it comes to people. Limitations are only obstacles. Just like your child can do anything, so can anybody else's. Training is like practising the piano. Do dogs do this? Heck, maybe...
Training is studying, dancing, sports, mathematics, economics, psychology... These things shape the long term brain and increase intelligence.
These claims are not opinions. They are facts.
OperaNotes 1 year ago
@OperaNotes Derby is both sociable and interactive but not in a typical way. Perhaps his EQ isn't typical but I'm sure if Albert Einstein were around, you would have an argument whether EQ is even a sign of intelligence. However, Derby's IQ and AQ are substantial.
Intelligence is the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge; the faculty of thought and reason; and the superior powers of mind by definition and training is to make proficient with specialized instruction....look up definitions
darrenmcnulty 1 year ago
@darrenmcnulty I consider you to be intelligent parents who would never use a difference as a reason why something in your son's life should make him inferior to others. However I also think you are quick to judge people. You take other people's opinion as a threat instead of as a different point of view. You also take objective arguments as a direct personal attack.
The long term brain remembers only what info sticks to previous knowledge. The more it learns, the more it can learn.
Cheers
OperaNotes 1 year ago
@OperaNotes Thanks for your opinion. However, unless you're a doctor that specializes in this sort of thing, your unsolicited viewpoint means very little.
First you say...
"These claims are not opinions. They are facts."
...and then say....
"You take other people's opinion as a threat instead of as a different point of view....You also take objective arguments as a direct personal attack."
You presented your opinion as fact and then judge - how typical. I'm not buying what you're selling.

Cheers

@OperaNotes I am interested so thanks for the link. Since we're name dropping doctors, I'd like to give props to Peter Szatmari for coming out with his latest study on autism and the underlying connections to its cause. Apparently it was the biggest study of its kind and was concluded only recently. Behavior is not always monkey see, monkey do....in the case of autism, it may be a response to sensory.
darrenmcnulty 1 year ago

Dont bring your smart kids up, to tell us "lower level people' that they are normal.
debbieh1100 1 year ago 2
@debbieh1100 My son has never said that you are a "lower level" person - however, if I let him read your words, he may be convinced otherwise in your particular case.
Sadly, you came here to try and discredit a 7 year old child and father using cursive, misspelled, hateful language. How about you "preech" to your high school english teacher of what a poor job was done giving you basic language skills.
As for cures, I pray that you are NOT the ideal result of any future autism antidote! LOL.
darrenmcnulty 1 year ago
@darrenmcnulty from an outside perspective, she's right, minus the mean words.
You should know your child is a victim of the governments bullshit chemicals....it's not fair and there some day will be a cure, in saying that, we are all in a state of constantly being dumbed down with chemicals and mind control from TV and our so-called Authority figures (doctors, mainstream 'scientists' etc)
The truth is what your 7 year old deserves! and it WILL help him see that ALL are equal, me, you, him all
41312111 1 year ago
@darrenmcnulty Also, Yo u have to realise that your body works like a computer, your soul gives it a signal to do something, the body reacts accordingly, only our perspective is from the inside of the computer.
The true cause of all of these problems is that they are trying to block us off from our souls gradually.
the point is, any problems your child is having with any natural function of the body that is to do with a disability, is caused by the very ones who are going to tell you it normal
41312111 1 year ago
@41312111 I understand what you are saying but that theory is just that - a theory, sorry. Yes, he has heard the truth....he possesses both ability and disability....don't we all to some varied level?
He is only a "victim" of being misunderstood as most autistics. I'm guessing you mean well but there is much research going on these days by many good people. Look up Dr. Peter Szatmari.
darrenmcnulty 1 year ago
@darrenmcnulty P.S. I'm not trying to be negative or rude, i just think that once you both realise that there is more to live than this body, however it acts/looks/feels, there is more past that, and everyone has an equal share of energy as a soul, and that's what matters.

I have decided to post your other bitter comment to show people what you're all about.

okej let me put YOU in pespectiv and look at yout comment
owkay you abviesly wrote this in fury Or to act tough
and/because youre saying between well lucky you and thinking about yourself ...right?
wel that doesnt make any sense he isnt thinkin about himslef hes talkin to his kid so he can be a little confortable with talking
hes his dad so he trust him more than some educated dipshit and he needs to learn how to deal with talkin to other s

@darrenmcnulty oow haha sorry i see
but its a good thing youre supporting youre kid so please dont mind my comment

@debbieh1100 (srry second post it was to long )
well you were saying his dad was thinkin about himslel wel why is that ??
how did you jump that conclusion
and maybey the kids case of ausperger s not as bad as some other kids so he doesnt need a cure like he says himself the kid is confortble with his autism and he has contacts with class mates so if his dad talks to him it probely will go over when hes like 15 - 20 it will never be TOTaly over but not noticeble or bothering over
julesistme 1 year ago
That kid does not stuggle with eye contact, infact he doesnt struggle with anything. A 7 year old, who can sit still and talk this well, should not be telling others that Autism is a good thing. I'm sick to death of people like you, who have it easy with your children...telling others there should not be a cure. This is why Aspergers should have a name of its own and be wiped from the spectrum for good. Lets hope for a cure for those who cannot speak and for the parents who need one.
debbieh1100 1 year ago
@debbieh1100 He "should not be telling others" anything according to you. Apparently he has no right to speak because he "doesn't struggle with anything" in your opinion....correct?
How about we wipe you from the spectrum of asinine comments.

Autism=giftedness+++
amchouhan 1 year ago
he said that autism should not be cured because it would be destroyed. circular reasoning does not work.
when he grows up and tries to enter the working world he won't be so happy. autism needs a cure.
danny313ful 1 year ago 2
@danny313ful I trust that you are happy in your work....how fortunate. Derby has skills and continues to improve on his ability...the video was made when he was seven and yet you don't give him a chance...your message is bleak and negative. Your opinion is not required - thanks for stopping by.
darrenmcnulty 1 year ago
@darrenmcnulty Sorry if my post sounded insulting. I did not mean for it to come across that way. Certainly people on the autism spectrum can do great things with their lives and I hope the best for your son. I am just disagreeing with your opinion that autism doesn't need a cure. Certainly those with autism would greatly appreciate if they could more effectively communicate with others and live a more well-rounded, socially satisfying life.
danny313ful 1 year ago
@danny313ful No problem.
He doesn't like the prospect of being cured of his individuality and association.
darrenmcnulty 1 year ago
@danny313ful the option should be there atleast. I am highly functioning. Hell, I'm an ex-marine and currently teach 8th grade English !
puritain1 1 year ago
@danny313ful when he grows up and enters the working field, odds are that he'll be extremely successful. That will be because he's had all his childhood with supportive parents who have helped him to understand his condition.
tatbrat2001 1 year ago
@danny313ful If you make them aware of their strengths and limitations, they can be extremely sucessful. Once my sons are interested in something, they learn everything about it, and retain that information. They both excel academically, especially in reading, math, and science. I am not sure how you think they can cure how the brain is wired?
Krippschick 1 year ago
@Krippschick I never said that they couldn't be "successful". Success has different meanings anyway. I am just saying that having autism makes living life more difficult both in social settings and at the job. I don't know how scientists will be able to cure autism but I have faith that they will in the future. The better question is, if a cure was available, why would a parent who cares about their child choose not to give it to them when it would make both of their lives easier.
danny313ful 1 year ago
@danny313ful No aspergers kid is exactly the same, they all have similiarities of course. I guess if it would help with negative behaviors, for them to be able to read people and connect, that would be good. But would the cure also make them lose their apparent ability to retain and recall vast amounts of information, or change their total personality, so they are not the same person. It would be a difficult decision, and if they are happy with themselves, I am not sure what I would do.
Krippschick 1 year ago
he is definitely autistic because he struggles with eye contact, just ask me
