  • there is one killer jam stuck in the middle of this

  • ....or so it looks from space

  • Ive never really been a fan of later dead (post 72, though Blues for Allah was one of my favorite albums) until I saw a DSO show a few weeks ago, it was an 82 and it really opened my eyes to decades of the dead I had previously ignored. I just turned 18, was a year and a half old when jerry died. But Since that show Ive been searching more later stuff, and this recording blows me away every time Thank you for posting, and thanks DSO for opening up my eyes, though im still learning to see ;)

  • wish there was a video to go with this recording -this is def one of the BEST 'throwing stones' i have ever heard .....

  • Love the stories! First show at Ventura, CA. Took another 2 Goony Bird and shook hands with my ass. I'm pretty sure I'm not the same since the second set of that show. I mean, seriously, I wanted just a blotter and this guy accidentally spills his little vial on my wrist and coupled with my first dose I pretty much checked out. I remember 'Sugaree' but that's it. I woke up on the banks of the 101 FWY the next day and had Ice Plant for breakfast. it's a little tough but tasty. Could've been worse

  • My first show was Alpine Valley in '85 or '86, seems like yesterday ....b

  • BOBBY

  • Bobby was so young and GORGEOUS, wasnt he?

  • Was at this show...

  • st.paul '83wasmy1st show2. Epic, thght they were sayn: "up here, uncle tom's cabin...High&lyricly challng'd! Sat up inmy 2nd deck seat for 1st set! Then I 'got up&wandered...wow! Isaw SO many people I knew. Our vwbus hadda flat after. we were all so hi &no jack. I asked people near us & we took turns 'trying' Jack was a snake!! They kept askin' for it back.I had to ask: "can you give us a break!" TOO much pressure. we got it tho. wow. I sang supplication for years l8ter....

  • I love the early versions of this song, much more jammed out if you ask me.

  • I really do miss the days of trading tapes. The excitement I used to get when I heard a crispy soundboard and smokin' a fatty. God Bless the Dead!

  • Love Bobby's songs. Always full of zip and pizzazz.

    No Molasses in January mopeyness.

  • Saw most of the shows that year.

  • What I remember about this was hearing Bobby's demo of this on just guitar on a tape (in the days of tape trading) some time after the studio version came out on 'In The Dark', it was really angry and dark, but memories are only memories...

  • What a nice recording. I fell like I was there...wait a minute.....I was.

  • Yeah, thats the kind of music old people listen to and think they´re cool and rock!

And I thought, Lynyrd Skynyrd are lame...

  • @HerrscherderWelt are you retarded? Go listen to some more shitty rap music or some retard screaming....hope you die!

  • @spelonk Kindness brother. On second thought nevermind

  • @spelonk hey, theres nothing wrong with metal... but I do agree that the grateful dead is amazing

  • so sick !!!!!

  • smoking to this right now

  • Like so many other Dead fans, I´ve till now mostly been listening to their late-60´s and early-70´s output (which most would agree was their golden period), but I have recently started to become aware of the many treasures to be found in other eras of the band´s history, such as this gem of a song.

  • Forget it bro, these junkies jumped the shark after 1977...

  • Well, that seems to be a perception shared by many people, but I do not feel it´s fully justified. The Dead DID make great music after the halcyon year of 1977; if you don´t believe me, just check out the videos from the 1980 Halloween show which can be found on Youtube.

  • Fair enough. What was the venue for that concert - Halloween '80?

  • Radio City Music Hall. There are only a handful of videos from that concert on Youtube, but enough to convince me (and hopefully you also) that this was one hell of a show. Let me know what you think . . .

  • Good stuff overall...

  • Yes, I thought you would agree. :)

  • Thank you for the reference Kariaudar...

  • You are more than welcome. I´m always glad to be able to introduce good music to others, who might otherwise not discover it :)

  • @kariaudar i've seen two, the beginning and "ripple", both are stunning, yes that must've been quite an evening

  • Yes, it certainly was :)

  • one of my fav. songs ever

  • Good Ol' Grateful Dead!

  • Will never forget my first show St. Paul '83. Made it to the first row of seats in front of the stage and there was one empty seat next to the aisle. I stood on it and had the best seat in the house! Dosing hard when Bobby sang "It's dizzying the possibilities" it was one of THOSE moments. Just for me, profound and an epiphany. Will never forget it as long as I live!

  • I hear ya brother, tell it, tell it so all the younger generation will understand the love, the music, the times...^5

  • @teleevangelist im 17 and love the dead as do many of my friends. im seeing further this summer a couple times too. dont worry this music will nvr die!!

  • @09jackstraw sweet!

  • @09jackstraw I understand, anything worth doing is worth OVERDOING.....bless you brother. I hope it loves in your soul forever. I only got to see them ONCE in my hometown in NOV of 1977, (check out the concert on ARCHIVE.ORG Evans fieldhouse Northern Illinois University, in Dekalb Illinois great concert.. As I get older I wish with all my soul I had gone to more concerts, now that I am old and in the way.....well life is made of decisions.....I screwed up bigtime. shame on me.

  • @graybeard19 We all have our paths and if the GD have taught us anything this life is but a moment. The music never stops and Furthur is sounding A-OK.... You got to see them once. Be happy, feel sad for the millions that never got to or couldn't or can't understand it.... Peace and Love my family member. I'll see you at the shows on the next level.... I'll be the guy with a smile on my face holding a FREE HUG sign.

  • @graybeard19 I know that show you saw its a goodie! '77 in my mind was one of their best years and I'd have

given anything to seen them then so you got one up on me! All the great music is there for us to hear and that is a gift too brother so ENJOY!!

  • great. some of my favorite GD lyrics.

  • Nice solo for Jer

  • Phil's bass is so sparce - he was just learning the song.

Jerry and Brent sound like they're waiting for the drums in the first half - they were still learning the sing. and Bobby is more animated than in later performances.

further, earlier versions tend to contain more prominent demonstrations of major themes and licks, tighter turns and punchier changes in dymanics.

    top three "throwin'"

  • hahaha

  • very nice thank you. 83 good spring, summer tour. "such a long to be gone, and a short to be there" KEEP SHAKING YOUR BONES!!

  • thank you for posting this!!!

This gives me goosebumps every time

  • I LOVE this song! Excellent!! :)
