Hi all! I just put a d35 Spartan locker in my ZJ last night, and to my surprise Lunch Locker are not as bad as everyone claims.I will be doing a Aussie in front however.I've read that they don't pop as bad when they unload torque on turns. So if you're on a budget I highly recommend Lunch Box type lockers..
My next buy is the aussie locker. Are you happy with it? How road friendly is it and is the purported clicking on corners annoying? Thanks. Subbed you. Check out my jeep if you have a minute. Once I get a front locker I am going back to a few places that I had to struggle through lol. I am not going to do the back just the d30 for now.
@Hortgeek I have front & rear aussies, They do make noise on super sharp turns i guess it could bother someone. The only issues I've had are with super hardpack snow & ice, sometimes opens can do a little better in rare situations.
@Oldsninetyeigth Nice I have installed an aussie in my front axle. In the bush it is fantastic and when it first snows the same. When the roads are partially plowed you can feel the stress on the axle and it becomes quite unruly. I have been running around in 2x4 untill I need it. The nice thing is that my jeep is not a daily driver and it seldom snows here. I have a couple vids up of the jeep working after install if you are interested. Thanks for the reply!
vspili is correct the aussie is a brand i have one, it is a lunchbox locker...arb is a brand that makes the air locker, and my springs, aussie on the other hand is manufactured by torq masters
I also hear alot that steering gets very difficult when in 4wd mode. That is so untrue with Jeep TJs. For 2 reasons: The TJ has very low geared hydraulic steering so it never get too heavy with a locker. The second reason is that if you feel the steering heavy (it will want to self center) it means that you use 4wd on non slippery terrain which is a big mistake even if you don't have a locker. A plus with the auto-lockers is that you can unlock them on a tight turn by letting off the gas pedal.
So, this Aussie locker runs in 2wd-4lo?(sorry, I'm a complete noob when it comes to lockers).. I have an '06 TJ (front Dana 30) and thinking of locking up the front axle first like you have here. I always hear great things about the Aussie lockers. Do you think they're the best for the money?
In the front the locker has no effect in 2wd mode. Slight clicking can be heard on turns, with the windows down and the stereo off. Not something to be embarrassed of. No problems on icy roads.
In 4wd mode, (L or H) the two front wheels get locked together when you apply power or when you compression brake and unlock when you coast on turns.
There are not much driveability issues in 4wd mode, just the steering wheel wants to self center on hard terrain were you shouldn't be using 4wd anyway.
You don't quite understand your own axle sorry. When the Aussie (ARB) locker is disengaged it acts like any other open axle and makes no clicking noises. When you engage it, it locks the front two wheels together absolutely and will not release until you disengage. And there's the problem, even after you disengage, they seem to stay locked until they feel like disengaging in their own good time. Steering is very difficult and you need to think about your driving very carefully.
Sorry but you don't know what the Aussie Locker is. Nothing to do with an ARB locker. The Aussie locker is an automatic locker or lunch-box locker, similar to a lock-right. No switches to turn it on/off. And it costs about $230 and is easy to install it yourself.
Pardon me if I don't know your slang or local term for vehicle parts. Everywhere I've seen, the "Aussie locker" is an ARB airlocker. Those other things you describe are relatively new to the market.
That XJ would be an unstoppable truck if it had an aussie in the front. Even without it I have seen it climb places none else could come even close. In this video it was the first time my brother drove it after building it, and he was not very comfortable with it yet.
great vid, how do u like the aussie locker, im thinking about geting one, and what do u have in the rear of the wrangler, cause u said u have the locker up front?
The rear has an open diff dana44. The Aussie is great. I have it 1.5 year now. Zero drawbacks in 2wd. In the snow it is great too. I have heard so many people saying that it is dangerous in snow or ice but I prefer the locked front than an open diff.
The only real problem comes on extreeme climbs cause the front wheels will lose traction together and the nose will slip sideways, which will put you in a dangerous situation. If you like to climb very steep grades, use a selectable locker.

Because it's way cheaper and effective.
After about 2 years, it still think it was worth it. I have used it on all kinds of terrain, it never really bothered me. For $230 it's perfect.

drgoodspd 2 years ago
are those auto lockers, meaning. The diff senses it through anertia, enertia LOL. ?The tire spinning and it engages automatically? thanks
bmetstud 2 years ago
No, in simple words, the wheels are locked all the time until you turn, then the wheel that wants to turn faster (the outside wheel) unlocks.

does the defender have a locker or anything front or back?
toadpecker 3 years ago
The defender has ESP or some type of traction control which brakes the spinning wheels, no lockers.

I just realized I made no sense.. Of course it wouldn't work in 2wd if i had just the front locked considering it's rear wheel ;)
Thanks for the info and for posting the vid, it's nice to see a product in action before you buy it.

The "Auusie Locker" is a brand name, as for the 'lunch-box' type lockers, they are a couple decades older than the ARB airlocker.

Near the moto-cross track, in Pendeli. The place was burned the past summer.

Was the whining noise from the TJ the aussie?
TslAtticus 4 years ago
No, it's the transfer case whining, when overreved (it is a 2.4l TJ).
