I was there!!! I can tell you, that double stroke roll intro was like an earth quake coming, and the whole performance was awesome! After the gig Tony gave an interview to a local tv channel and he was standing next to me, smoking a big cigar...
i met tony williams at the jazz alley (seattle)in 1989 when he toured with his quintet. my xwife worked there and she had set it up for me during his break. nice guy, gave me a set of sticks but i was too starstruck to be myself. he used to piss off the management at jazz alley because he played so loud and they would ask him to tone it down but he wouldn't!!...gotta love his style! died way too young. miss him.

Its too bad the audio & video compression that is necessary for youtube causes tiny holes in the performance for the viewer. He is too fast for this format !
he must have been one of the loudest jazz drummers.....that groove he breaks into coming out of the solo is hardcore! his confidence and bravdo is amazing!
Tony was totally willing to explore texture in such a beautiful manner. Starting out an extended improvisation with a long roll that weaves in and out creating such interesting textures every time I listen to it. Thanks for posting!

@tripleshotdrummer But all these videos can be found in their entire forms and in ' regular ' format, without compression.

ReThis piece is called "Red Mask". He recorded this for his album "Angel Street".
Tony's playing on that track is some of the best he recorded with his quintet..
Bill Pierce is the the saxophonist. Wallace Roney is the trumpeter and Mulgrew Miller is the pianist. I believe Bob Hurst is the bassist.

@DLuebbert Yes Red Mask. The personnel was already described on that space right below the video screen.
