  • how many miles do you have to change ?

  • @meloaleo it depends on the type of riding you do. consult your owners manual for you specific bike.

  • Great Job! Very detailed and enough information for someone to rebuild the top end.

  • @michaelhayworth Thanks. I mostly did this to show just how easy it is so people will realize there is no reason to spend big money at a dealership on such a simple job.

  • thankyou very much for your detailed and descriptive demonstration it has helped me rebuid and restore my rm85 so thanks alot

  • @dylanjax1 glad i could help

  • thankyou very much for your detailed and descriptive demonstration it has helped me rebuid and restore my rm85 so thanks alot

  • how old are you? u still ride a 85? im just curiopus as im 15 and ride a yz250 and you say you had a 8hr race with a 85 thats rediculious!

  • @bozillakilla i am amused every time someone asks this on here.

  • lol did i hear meet the browns in the backround? sounded like mr. brown

  • Thanks I for the vid I wanted to see how often you have rebuild it holy s**t dude I'm not gunna do that every 10 hr I trail ride I'm gunna go 4 stroke thanks for the vid again (:

  • @bulletproof8686 My maintenance intervals are for a race motor. For trail riding you would get many more hours out of it. A 4 stroke would probably make a better trail bike because it has better low end power.

  • @bulletproof8686 ya thats if your racing lol. my 03 yz250 with race port and fuel injection with 185psi comp. can run a piston for 100 give or take hours without dropping a pound of comp.

  • @bozillakilla a stock bike if given reg mantenence can go over 150hrs.

  • hey man how can u tell if a piston and rings are bad? if u have the piston in ur hands lol. i got a 1985 yamaha it 200 and it came with a parts bike and said it just needed to be put togeter. all parts are there . looking forward to my first big project

  • hey man have you still got your bike? im getting an 04 85 tomorrow and was just wondering how the compare with ktms?

  • @Yamyooooom ktm is faster

  • wow that seems really easy.Great explanation this will really come in handy when the time comes to rebuild my 125 sx.Thanks for posting such a good video.

  • @rideskisallday This video is no replacement for the proper service manual for your specific bike. Your KTM should be very similar but you will want the KTM manual to refer to for specific measurement and torque specifications.

thanks for watching my video and leaving a comment.

  • @tripletrash Yeah I will definitely refer to the manual when I am doing it.I've only seen 2 videos with a clear explanation on how to do this(including yours) and it really is kind of like a boost of confidence.

  • is that why my cr85 sezied up coz i was on my bike very day for 8hrs a day and sometimes i was up the mountain for like 10hrs and didnt change nothing. but its been fixed naw but its seems like theres no powerband i think it has lost loads of power ? why is there a reason or of i got to run it in a bit more ?

  • @Threesixty12 no clue bro i would have to have rebuilt the bike to have any idea.

  • What tipe of oil did you put the bering in and how do you put the piston in the jug with the rings on it you didn't show that part

  • @carlito199322 I used the same two stroke oil I use for my pre mix to lubricate the parts. and I compressed the ring with my hand and slid the jug down on the piston and case studs. if your finding it difficult to install make sure you have the locating pin in the piston ring grove lined up with the ring gap. A piston ring compressor could also be used but I don't use it in this case.

  • hey my 1986 cr125 just started reving very high for no reason then it started pouring oil out of the bottom of it

  • @justinchaffin1013 that sucks

  • @tripletrash well after it shut off i shut it off i dont think i blew the top end wouldnt it get bad compression

  • @justinchaffin1013 yes if the top end is bad it will either stick or lose compression.

  • @tripletrash oh then its fine

  • i have a 2002 yz 85 and my piston fried up an pieces of it chipped off an i think its stuck in my engine...how do i get it out

  • @ieef56 your going to have to split the cases.

  • Nice italian shirt Bro!! :D

  • I have a 2003 kx 85 and I was riding not maxed out or in high gear, but then the back tire locked up and the kick started is locked. What do you think I should do/how should I fix it

  • @bloodreaper121212 You seized your engine. Probably needs new plating, piston, ring, etc, or a bottomend rebuild.

  • where do u live ill pay you 100 bucks if u rebuild my 1998 cr125 2 stroke

  • Do you race this 85?because you seem like you need a 250 or125

  • @MrBoardrider11 Notice this was 3 years ago...

  • nice background sounds

  • Nahh its every 20 houres for ring and every 40 for piston

  • r u really aspose to replace the piston every 8-10 hours???????

  • Ahh ok, just bought a wiseco piston and is running good but cant realy tell and power difference, but thanks!

  • Would the ring gap be the same on a 96' cr125?

  • Are honda pistons more powerfull than wiseco?

  • @Honda27kid they have differing power output characteristics. for the type of riding I did with this motor the honda piston was best. The wisco could be better for off road/ flat track riding.

  • What kind of oil do you put on the wrist pin bearing? and is it that important to gap the rings or can i just leave then the way they are out of the package?

  • @kawikfx400rider I use the same two stroke oil I mix with the gas. You need to check the ring gap, it may or may not need to be adjusted.

  • do you have to rejet for the v-force 3 reeds

  • Ive ridden my kx 60 for over 4 years riding in every condition possible topping the thing out whenever I got the chance and Its still runs just fine. But i might do a rebuild just for the hell of it.

  • you should lower the volume on that days of our lives thing in the background

  • u dont replace the piston every 10 hours u replace rings every 20 hours a replace my piston like every 50 hour but i dont race i practise at track and do trails

  • haha its cheap to rebuild 2 strokes, and it depends how hard u ride it, ya ur kx 85 may have had 200 hours on it, but some kids can burn them up in 10-15 hours or less.

  • hey i need help where could i get a cr 80 cylinder jug? im not even sure what the part is. im going to buy a 94 cr 80 but i dont know if the cylinder head is expensive or what it even is.

  • well, if you dont race, you can actuely wait 30 hours before you actuely have to change the piston, sometimes even more

  • what kinda oil do you use for your rod bearing and wristpin?

  • @honda1296 its 20ft pounds on a torque wrench

  • @xXgofalldownXx are you possitive?

  • @oSHOLLIVERo Yup just rebuilt my top end with a 52mm overbore for a 101.5cc..Torque the head bolts and cyl bolts to 20 foot pounds

  • @xXgofalldownXx aight thanks, cause i just blew my top end on my 85, and i was just about to sell it

  • Whats wrong with my bike??? Its going into high RPMs but it dosent hit the powerband and just kinda boggs and sputters but has good compression and sounds nice ?? tell me what you think, thanks.

  • @yamahabro34 needs piston and rings, maybe check your reeds they maybe chipped

  • can you remove the cir clips with a flat screw driver? or is there something else you need

  • lol The Rock is playing in the background

  • @honda1296 you should take your bike to a qualified mechanic.

  • @honda1296 yesss please reply to me about that aswell :)

  • @bigboxingmike you should take your bike to a qualified mechanic.

  • @tripletrash i now what the newton meters iss now, i new it was with torque on bolts but didn't no how to get the newton meters but you have to buy a special wrench :)

  • @tripletrash i am 14 and i can do this myself

  • @EvansAutoShop i just bought it from a neighbor his kid out-grew it in a year somehow and it only had 10 hours on it

  • @EvansAutoShop its an 08 but i've put it through so much mud it's disgusting

  • @EvansAutoShop i was in the middle of a mud bog and at high rpms and it finally blew i wasn't over-reving it it was just really worn out

  • @EvansAutoShop i had to replace it because it threw the rod and seized up, i had to replate the cylinder, hone it and get a new piston and rod.

  • @mcninjja so it wasn't really fine then was it? My rebuild recommendation is based on my experience ROAD RACING not riding on dirt. but clearly you destroyed the bike running it that long so it is far from "fine"

  • How much would this be to take into a shop?

  • @motocross223Tanner i took mine into a shop and it cost me about $500

  • @jjlew06 you have to be joking! this takes MUCH less than an hour and less than $100 in parts. hour of shop time is about $90.00 so i would guess around $200 in most shops.

  • @jjlew06 holy shit!! really!!! i am just going to do it my self this time. and what do you think i will need? i was riding high third then went to 4th and then my bike just shut of and when i went to kick it it the kick start was stuck! then i got it down and when i went to kick it a second time it was sooo fucking easy to kick!!! i could pull it down with one finger!!! i dont know if i need a hole top end or just like gaskets?

  • @jjlew06 sounds like something is wrong with your kick start mechanism.

  • @tripletrash yea thats what i was thinking but i dont understand how the kick start would stop the engine?

  • @jjlew06 you could have an issue in the bottom end. really no way to tell without seeing it. if your mechanically inclined and have a shop manual for the motor you might go about troubleshooting it. Going to a trained mechanic may be your best bet.

  • Guys he forgot to say that there is a T mark on the ring and when you install the ring it has to be facing up.

  • @Laxbro37 exactly

  • he checked the gap wrongly!

u must check it mid way up cylinder NOT over the ports as the ring slides into these a little giving to large a gap.

    and only use diamond file.

  • @Peterrides thats cuz you dont ride hard!

  • my kx85 never got rebuilt. 5 years old still starts first kick good compression

  • could someone tell me what is the difference between honing a cylinder and boring a cylinder?????? PLEASE HELP ME!!

  • @Sandeep9201 honing is only fixing the walls of the cylinder just to make the piston rings sit better... boring the cylinder is actually making the cylinder walls wider and putting a bigger piston in it to make the bike faster!

  • Very helpful video, thanks

  • haha i rode 200 hrs on my kx 85 before replacing the piston and it was fine

  • @mcninjja you say it was fine then you say you threw a rod so wich is it?

  • @mcninjja 8-10 hours is for races if your just riding for fun then its 40-50 hrs i think

  • nice video hepled a lot and all the comments how long do u run the bike[brake in] in for and how hard coz iv heard a lot of different ways and u guys sound lke u know what ur talkin about wound help a lot nice one iv got a kx 100 1998 by the way

  • @randlehudlhm87 I would do the manufacturers recommended bake in procedure

  • How much money would a top end rebuild like this cost? Thank You.

  • @spadzo depends if you need a new cylander. this kid didnt need one so all he had to get is a new piston. and an 85 piston could cost about $100ish! and it can come in a kit that has gaskets, piston, and rings for about $100!

  • great video, dont forget to check the crank berring- my friend who grad from MIT says to skip the heat cycle and sent me this link, while its mostly for 4 strokes the same idea applys to the 2 stroke ring

    mototuneusadotcom/break_in_secrets.htm

  • @Jthumper yeah? well thats just like.. your opinion..man

  • haha your rebuilding a honda with a suzuki shirt on lol

  • @pktillidie its a Moto Guzzie shirt

  • hey i just rebuilt my yz 125 top end and when i started it there was white exhaust smoke and was wondering if thats normal

  • @overther166 did you oil the ring and cylinder first?

  • Great video. Thank you!

  • Nice video, but i dont agree with the statement to replace your piston every 8-10 hours. 5/5 though.

  • @frey43 fair enough

  • u look to big 4 an 85......

  • @HondaRider137 I race all sizes of road race motorcycles from my kx 60 motard to my Triumph Daytona 675, maybe you should keep your comments to yourself.

  • man u say u hav a 8 hour race and ur rebuilting a 85 man ur lyk 16 u should have a 250

  • @mcauly1 Actually i'm 26 a RAD RACE bike. Im not sure what you base my needing a 250 on. you can't race a 250 in the class i ran that bike in.

  • @tripletrash that should say road race not rad race not sure whats up with that

  • if you ride it right like let it warm up take some slow laps and get the mix right then you can change the top end every year or so

  • @vincent12225 you obviously don't roadrace

  • @tripletrash in fact i race in motorcross and supercross and as long as u get the build up of the piston and cylinder every 10 to 15 hours then ull have no problem it practicly the same as a new top end

  • @vincent12225 Motocross and supercross is very different on a motor than road racing. I have no experience with dirt motors but after running 8 hours at redline on a road race track the piston is done.

  • you only need to rebuild your engine every 20 hours and wisceo makes better pistons do you know what ur talking about??

  • @skidoo141 wisco pistons are good for dirt track and the like but honda is better for roadracing.

  • i ride my bike for 8 to 10 hours a day with friends so are you saying that every day i ride i need to get a new piston and rings yai dont think so

  • @rcnuts1 if your just trail riding and putting about you will probably be fine. The 8 hour maintenance is for racing.

  • Comment removed

  • Bullshit. You do not need to rebuild the top end every 8-10 hours. If you race and never let off the throttle, then maybe. But I have like 20 hours on my yz85 and it Runs perfect.

Why waste 100 bucks on a top end when you don't need it. But I'm going to rebuild my top end this winter. That will be like 40 hours

  • @JuniorPros118 im having more than 80 hours and still runs great. ill def. change it asap

  • @JuniorPros118 If like me you race the bike for 4-8 hours at a time on a roadrace course wide open, then yes the top end only lasts about 8 hours.

  • is it easy

  • how do u decide weathr or not the cylinder is good just look for scoring inside it?

  • what type of oil do u use

  • where do you get your parts from?

  • do you have to get it top dead centre when you are finished and if you do how do you do that thanx :D

  • How come the engine rebuild recommendations are something like 5hours 80cc 10hours 125cc?

A 125 is the highest HP/Litre of dirtbikes, and theres also torque of 125cc wearing down the piston, not only the rpm of the 80cc..

  • ive done 30+ rebuilds top or bottom (when ever you do a bottom u do a top end too) and never once have i filed the ring down. Your not suppose to and you getting lucky you havent messed your cylinder up. And you are suppose to do a hone everytime you do a rebuild to break the glaze the piston makes on the cylinder and OEM pistons dont produce moer power the just last a lot longer than most brands.

  • @RIPBJN by filing the ring down I assume you mean when i set the ring gap. That is very necessary and you are just lucky you have not seized a motor yet. READ the instructions with your next piston. why else would they give a spec. for it?

  • @tripletrash i have seized one motor on my yz85 and thats cause i blew my crank bearings. i never set the ring gap because 9 times out of ten you dont need to. i race and have raced dirtbikes for 11 years now (im 15) and learned from my dad who has been doing 2 smoker motors for 25+ years now and he said he did it once because he bought the wrong size ring (a,b,c, cylinders). I had a KTM 65 that had more compression than a 125 (1200 dollars of motor work) and didnt have to set the gap

  • @RIPBJN if the gap is right then you are correct there is no need to adjust it. But I measure it every time to be sure.

  • Great vid man. Some people just love to talk crap like "the451motocross" and just make pointless arguments. This was very well put together especially considering that most of the time you're using one hand to do everything.

Hey what kind of oil did you use there on the bearing before you inserted it?

  • @Fattyfatfatty6 I use synthetic Honda premix oil.

  • I just got a rm80, and I was wondering where I could get a cheap ass piston cause I'm not paying $100 for a whole kit, I don't need the gaskets. I just need the piston.. Please reply, lol. If you have aim my s/n is jeeshtyler. Thanks

  • can you use pre mix to oil up the bearing and the other shit ?

  • @drummermesev I use the same oil I would use in my premix. I don't recommend using premixed gas and oil because it might be too thin to properly protect these critical parts in the first start up.

  • good video, not great. the book specs the measurements in inches. also when you rebuild the top end, don't you break it in... nuff said.

  • @the451motocross Thanks, i just decided to video my rebuild one night because i didn't have anything better to do. I don't know what book you have but every shop manual i own has both metric and "standard" measurements. i use the metric measurements because its easier. you always brake in a motor after a rebuild but i'm not sure what your point is.

  • this guy is telling you the wrong info on ring gap. the minimum is .011 and the maximum is .017 for the cr85. a ring gap over .018 should be replaced with a new ring gapped to the minimum spec unless you want power loss and blowby !!!!!!!

  • @the451motocross My measurement was in millimeters not inches.

  • Haha funny loud tv in the background..

  • you are the man nice work well done!!

  • brill vid mate just wondering your motor must be a 80 not an 85 as the top end gasket you replaced is only on the 80's an 85 just has a rubber o-ring but tbh i dont see a differance in 80-85 its just a maketing took . and i prefer the wiseco pistons as they are slightly lighter and slightly stronger . and again brill vid mate

  • its an 85, I have several cylinders 80& 85 and they all use head gaskets. I know of a few after market heads that use o rings but I don't have one. the 80 is really an 82cc and the 85 is an 83cc so not much difference.

  • by the way good video mate especially gapping the rings so many people dont bother then cry when there motor siezes...5 stars mate

  • why do you have to get a new to end

  • what

  • Nice video, it would be cool to ride with you I'm going to post a video of my 85,but I never have done the piston ring thing and I never have a problem

  • Is there a certain way the c clip has to be in the piston?

  • i assume you mean the cir-clips that hold the wrist pin in, and no. just make sure the gap in the clip is not in the pick point.

  • how often do u have to replace the top end on 85s

  • it depends on how you ride them

  • What about the bottom end?

  • to change a head gasket do u just take the head off slip it an put the head back on or do you have to tighten it a certain amount cus i dont no what it would be on my bike

  • If you don't have the proper tools or information it is best to take it to a qualified shop.

  • DO NOT FOLLOW THIS VIDEO !!! This clown FAILS to mention that the RING GAP NEEDS TO LINE UP WITH THE PIN ON THE PISTON FOR PROPER RING COMPRESSION AND THE RING NEEDS TO BE FACING "T" SIDE UP. I ruined a NEW cylinder head listening this boy.

  • its almost impossible to put a piston in the cylinder without the ring properly lined up. You should have read your service manual more carefully before you forced it together improperly.

  • @thisguyisaterd You must be retarded then, this tutorial is excellent lol, i bet you put your piston in back to front aswell lol, total moron.

  • @thisguyisaterd COME ON ITS BLOODY OBVIOUS YOU NEED TO DO THAT HA HA IF YOU DONT KNOW THAT KEEP AWAY FROM YOUR ENGINE

  • @thisguyisaterd check from 4:10 to 4:30 I actually do mention the pin and ring gap. if you read the instructions that came with your piston it would also tell you this as well as that the T faces up.

  • thank you very much next time im at the store ill pick up a torch wrench

  • hi m8 jus rebuild my top end,,but there seems to be a loud metal on metal knocking sound from topend ??,,,,WHY reply asap please

  • Im buying a 96 honda cr 80 and i have never owned a 2stroke before i have a 96 yamaha warrior 350 check out my viedos but anyways the do u have any advice on how to make theys engines last longer and how many pistons can u put in a cylinder b4 u have to buy a new cylinder? but what would happen if u didnt tork the nuts down to 27 nuten meters? thank you

  • keep them stock or only lightly modified and they will be pretty much bullet proof. you can use the cylinder until it is out of spec. there is no set number of pistons. you could get a leak around the head or base of the cylinder if the bolts aren't properly torqued. IF you get this kind of leak the bike will have poor power and will sputter.

  • lol right wen you said "you neeed to re-install your head" my dad walked by and said ya you do yours seems to be loose.. LOL HE was talking to me btw

  • @gtyamaha hahaha thats awesome

  • nice video cr 85s are fun as hell! helpfull video

  • why you race a 85?

you own a 250 too yea?

    :)

  • this is for my moriwaki mh 80 roadracer that I run in mini endurance with a few friends. look at my other videos for footage of it and my other race bikes in action on the track.

  • i wanted to ask you, when you buy new rings and piston do you buy a standard size and how much overbore on the rings ? 0s.25 0.50 or ? i have a honda trx 125 im rebuilding but and hesitant on buying one too big or too small... keep up the good work!

  • if you have not modified the cylinder they by standard sized rings and piston.

  • this is just too simple lol

i have a 4 stroke and it would take hours do do this

  • Thanks, my intention with this video was to show how simple this kind of maintenece realy is. the 4 stroke is some what more complicated, but its not anything to be afraid of. the hardest part for your bike is geting the timing correct. this is nothing to be afraid of either. If it takes you a few hours to do your top end that is a good thing, it means your taking the time to do it properly, and you will get faster with experence. I'll do a 4T video if I get a chance.
