....actually, quite informative and entertaining video. Just in case you play trumpet or another brass instrument, I think you might find some trumpet and brass tutorials quite intriguing over at YOURBRASSINSTRUCTOR's Channel.
Gotta love Buddy's snap answer on his career destiny if he hadn't been a musician. Yeah, he could have made it as a bank robber, and he wouldn't have needed a gun. He would have disarmed everyone with his humor and with everyone ROFL, he could walk our with the cash. Even without drums Buddy would have made the hall of fame as a stand-up comic and/or a tap dancer. Lucky for us, he had drums too.
Horrible interview. Stupid questions, unprepared, the interviewer is into himself. Do some research! Now that I've listened again, I changed my position....it's even worse!
The best drummer that ever lived. I saw him in Sheffield, England, where I was born. He was just great. However.....what a terrible interviewer !!!!!!!!!!! .A negative, poor, thoughtless upstart with little to no research. He comes across as a jealous black, biggot.
This must be X-Mas '85. I agree that Bryant is a moron when it comes 2 interviewing the man. Also strange how Buddy's not being obnoxious as usual, perhaps because it was 2 early in the morning! I saw the band 1 month later and got Buddy to do an ID for my radio show (Artistry in Jazz/KPCC-FM). Of course, Buddy tried to belittle me the whole time instead of being supportive. But I was totally prepared since I knew of his mean spirit. Here, I'd say this is the calmest BR I've ever seen.
I AGRREE. Buddy is so cool with this sort of thing. He really had the right mood amd come back. Far, far, far too many people kiss-up to any journalist. Especially the way journalists can be deeply patronizing to any musician. Actors are bowed down to... Buddy would do a show and the tv guy says his name and that's it; done. I so totally agree here: Buddy all the way; he handled it perfectly.
Pursue something else? What the heck else did BUDDY RICH need to prove?? He obviously was just called to be one of the most bad ass drummers of all tme.
Buddy, a genuis is someone who can do something nobody else can do and who thus 'thrusts what ever he does 'out into the future' so that MAKES YOU A GENUINE GENIUS BUDDY. RIP & thanks for being A GENIUS!
quoted, Two profound Things here for all these stickholders .: "Labels dont mean a thing "and "Retirement is a Sick thing" tHERE ARE VERY FEW dRUMMERS THAT HAVE OR COULD HAVE HAD AND maintained a career like BUDDYS : SIMPLY AMAZING .
Gumble is an asshole. Bottom line. There is playin devils advocate and there is being a asshole and being out of line. And Gumble is a jerkoff. I love how rich put him in his place and said you sound like my wife cause thats what he is a fuckin nagging ignorant woman. jesus.
LOL You Guys crack me up ! Yeah,... Buddy is the reason I've been doing it for 30 plus years. I thank God for Him ! Hang in there and keep going to live shows. Ed Man ( Jazz & Rock Percussionists )
Give Bryant a break, interviewing anyone is a tough task, interviewing a guy like Buddy was really daunting. He could be funny or all at once acerbic. It would be a tight rope act to work with him. Sounded like a good interview to me, better than most and a good boost for jazz.
@coyotecall66 it is a tough interview, but every time i see bryant he's the same way with every interview, regardless of how hard or easy or friendly or tough to open up with. But I think it went pretty well here considering that bryant could have been more negative. i certainly think bryant does like buddy, and is a little dumfounded at buddy's happiness and longevity. good interview. thanks for posting
Bryant Gumbel has always been an obnoxious, self righteous ass. A smart ass when interviewing and a whine ass when he didn't get his own way. Don't know how he ever got employment!!
This was a great interview and Buddy was absolutely right. When you love what you do and it's your passion, you don't retire from it. You retire from a JOB, not a career that is your lifeblood.
You guys don't know Bryant Gumbel - this is a typical interview, playing devil's advocate to set up the guest for great comebacks. You can see Buddy smiling and ready to snap back a cool answer. There's a lot of info that comes out of this interview - well done, Bryant.
@rerr2000 for good or for bad , bryant is like this with every interview i've seen. at first it annoyed me, but it does sometimes get interesting answers. I'm kind of used to it by now, but it does annoy me a littlle myself, because it's a little negative. Bryant obviously does seem to like buddy though.
That's a great point ludwig. Though, I also wonder for guys like Buddy, Woody Herman.. who also had his share of IRS problems. How much that also influenced their decision to keep on playing. For whatever the reason though, I'm certainly glad they did. I think Buddy and his bands just kept getting better and stronger.
Hey guys, It's just an interview technique to provoke good banter, and Buddy really loved it...I'd worked at NBC and had seen Buddy over 40 times...Buddy always loved to chat and had great memory recall on just about everything...Buddy was quite approachable and tuned in with strangers with friendly interest.
@MrDrumact wow, interesting. who did buddy like to talk to the most, and what kind of people did buddy like? Not just drum and jazz music fanatics. thanks for any answer.
@ludwig222 i agree, gumbel doesn't get it. His questions are so negative, why not this, why not that. Buddy is happy with what he does. Maybe that's why gumbel retired and plays golf. who knows.
