  • Trick of The Tail/Ripples, my 1st ever vinyl single 74/75?I was 13/14 - an older hippyish guy who lived near me gave me it as his example to me of good music. He wasnt wrong.

  • Phil never come back ??? a-t-il encore de la force dans ses bras ? A-t-il encore la force de chanter ?...Los Endos...???'

  • Just amazing :$ <3

  • GENESIS que de souvenirs!!!!!phil collins chante toujours avec autant de voix que du temps de genesis. que du bonheur.....

  • i'm from brazil and i'm just 13

I think this is one of the best musics I ever heard

  • ahhhh...takes me back.....

  • Dont get any better than this!

  • he is the best

  • What a.......No words are not necessary.

    Just listen!!

  • I'll live with this version!

  • Just emence... I have been totaly lost in my head for the last eight minutes awesome!!!

  • toute ma jeunesse!!!!!!!!!

  • I found it very difficult to believe after all this time anyone could not like or "thumbs down" Genesis. I have to say it growing up in the seventies where the era of the singer/songwriter was highly prevelant and the epitome of the age was reflected in truly magnificent artists such as Genesis. I have yet to find in today's age of cookie cutter musicians artists who evoked such emotions!

  • Daryl did not destroy no guitar parts whatsoever!!! So just can it!!!! He is a great guitarist!!!!! He's just fabulous!!!! He can play it with his eyes closed so shut up!!!!!!!

  • @45wolfer I did not say that Daryl is a bad guitarist. I only said that he ruins many of the guitar parts. He plays too fast and put too many notes

  • One of the few songs in which Daryl does not destroy the guitar parts created by Hackett

  • Thanks to all of your thoughts... I will keep them always in my heart...Jesus is awesome...Shelly

  • The crowd is in awe.... shear class!

  • @bornagainru119 Hold on to ur memories as they are special, and good luck....

  • sorry for my terrible english, dont'worry you are not alone, in these world these always someone who thinks to you everytime, when you listen this wonderful song remember that someone is listening close to you. God bless you!

  • spettacolare <3

  • to piękne!

  • meraviglia!

  • I was in my early teens when Trick of the Tail was released and although I loved the song, I couldn't relate to the lyrics. Now, at nearly 50, I have returned to Genesis and the meanings behind this song are very clear and moving.

  • @notjohnagain Me too..... thankful that experiences have brought me back to understanding.

  • pure magic!

  • hmmm i saw them in the Manny appollo in 1980 had me in tears ,, with this song ,,

  • unreal

  • Let's just assume that the four people who hit "dislikes" hit it by mistake.

  • Thinking feeling mans' music

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written! That goes for the whole album. These are the golden years of Genesis, not the 80's stuff. Hobbit rock rules! Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Yes, (I could do w/o Styx) are the sounds of my youth. Then the visual decade, 80's buried these bands and made eyecandy-friendly bands big. Now, it's still all about looks over licks. Great loss to music.

  • I wish I had been alive back when music was meaningful... I just turned 30 and NEVER listen to new stuff, which in my opinion is all the same, from one band to another. No more guitar or sax solos, no more soul, no more heart...

  • Ripples, special moments with this music.

A very young woman... 30 years ago.

    Always in my mind...

    Ripples, ever come back!

  • grande performans ..... great song ! thank's for post

  • When with Genesis, Phil Collins touches a depth in music that he doesn't reach in his solo music. The closest he came was in Face Value.

  • I would have loved to see them on this tour. Unfortunately, they didnt make it any where near the upper left corner of the US. I was lucky enough to see them back in 86 during their "Invisable Touch" tour. They are just as tight now as they were back in 86. Sweet vid, thanks for posting this!

  • Just for today I think I might listen to this on a loop

  • To Awkmore; Music has changed. Hillary Duff? Britney Spears? Back in my day there was the term called "Formula Rock," not complimentary at all. Sometimes Record Cos. go for the bottom line, so a lot of thin music gets airplay and honest artists go by the wayside, but search long and thorough enough and you'll be able to find someone who has a voice, a heart, and a lot of talent to spare and at the top of the current trends. Substance is usually not a concern when money is at stake.

  • can you explain to a 16yearold girl the meaning of this song?

  • @Awkmore I listened to this album constantly when it came out in '76 (I was 14) & absolutely loved it but 'Ripples' always bothered me because it felt like a disturbing premonition - the album artwork shows an old crone looking into a mirror and seeing her younger self reflected back. And it's true, you still feel the same but the reflection keeps changing (my mum & mother-in-law always wanted to know who the old woman in the mirror was as they still felt 18!) & at 48 I know what they meant ;)

  • @hoptunaa21 You are so right...but think of the knowledge and the inner beauty we have all become. Love it and be proud we could experience such music. We will not see it again!!! I doubt others will too..... x

  • @Awkmore ... now you know the difference between a garbage can and a diamond..sorry you have to grow up with the trash they call music today.

  • Superb!!

  • One of the best Genesis songs ever. Old but a real diamond. :-)

  • ~~love the cuts to the audience and their emotion ~ great ~ very spiritual music ♥

  • I was in high school when "Trick of theTale" came out. I was a devout fan of Genesis, but this particular song, just one of their masterpieces, I would listen to over and over as I battled with attention deficit, adolescence and host of other problems known all too well by loner teenagers. I brought the album to play in a teacher's class one day, but she me told to stop the song before it ended. She heard the lyrics and acutely felt her mortality, At the time I did't get the song's

    story.

  • @ringo29507 dude, I wish I'd grown up with this song instead of Hilary Duff or Britney Spears. But times have changed. :(

  • @Awkmore Good for you for listening to it. If you listen to stuff like this you will hear the REAL music. I feel so badly for your young generation that you don't have music of this quality - I'm not being patronizing - it's not your fault. I really truly feel sorry for you. I'm sure the really good music will come back - maybe the next generation?! Just keep listening. You are wise beyond your years!..with love.

  • Anyone noticed that Tony is playing the song in the original E key and transposed it down to D for this, so he doesn't have to relearn the song???

  • @firthof - when you are doing what they did THEN you can criticize, till then shut up.

  • @gillyflower100 Firstly I didn't criticize Tony Banks. I play the piano myself, so my comment was purely technical curiosity. I would probably have transposed it, too. Secondly, even if I was criticizing him, I would have every right to do so. Do you have to be a rock star to criticize other rock stars? No, you don't. That would be stupid.

  • @firthof Hey!..wussup firthof ?..Greetings from the U.S....i read ur comment(s), and your reply to that nitwit, is right on..I'm an average keyboard player and always working on Genesis material. Your curious musical insight is indeed interesting and helpful....Thanks for pointing it out!...Have you also noticed how they decided to cut the instrumental section in half ?..Leaving out the very highlight of this song..Hackett never would've went for that "time restraint" idea....Thanks again

  • These guys are still amazing after all of these years. My fav song of theirs.

  • @Layna8 It's blocked because it's COPYRIGHTED material so complaining to youtube will just get it yanked off their site. *LOL*

  • Comment removed

  • @AUDREYoftheISLEofELY

Audrey...this is not what I am talking about...I know all about copyright blocking and that is not what the problem was...I did complain to YOUTUBE and they FIXED the problem yesterday morning.

All music audios, etc. were volume-blocked for 3 days here in the Vancouver area of Canada.

Not one song I commented on, was copyright blocked...and they have not removed them from YouTube.

    But, thanks, for ur input.

I will now remove my post, as the prob. is now solved.

    L.

  • @Layna8 I see. Ok well here they have been disabling the songs sound for videos that are copyrighted. Good that you got your issue fixed.

  • The emotion in any Genesis song is simply breathtaking.

  • I saw this in Old Trafford even now when it starts all the hairs on my neck stand on end

    Just Brilliant

  • absolutely captivating!

  • I can not listen to this song without tears coming to my eyes !! was my mums fav song,,, long live genesis!!!ripples never come back!!

  • I saw Genesis first back in 1970 when they played support to Curved Air at Essex University and again at Leicester's De Montfort Hall in 72, both of course with frontman Peter Gabriel. I have photos from both gigs.

  • I'm big into a ton of genres. I'll go from Brian Wilson to Grupo Niche to Keith Jarrett to Jorge Villamil to Oasis to Copland to Frankie Valli.

Ripples could be the most affecting song I've ever heard. This version - though a bit snipped - blows my mind. And, most importantly, tugs at my heart.

  • Ripples Bri - Ripples.... You an angel in my eyes - ripples never come back.. be prosperous. - Everyone needs to check out that whole album. One of ther best works. Dance on a volcano ! Trick of the tail.

  • Ripples Bri - Ripples.... You an angel in my eyes - ripples never come back.. be prosperous. - Everyone needs to check out that whole album. One of ther best works. Dance on a volcano !

  • I love how mesmerized the audience is.

  • this song rules!!! everyone that said steve hackett was the sh## hasn't seriously listened to darryl= he's at least equal, this coming from a monster genesis fan. thanks for posting.

  • Its great to see Phil Collins is BACK.

  • For my Brother Rick S. Garrett R.I.P.

  • always loved this song.....Haunting melody........what an awesome song..........

  • one word.........WOW!!!

  • I LOVE this song

  • And the truncated instrumental passage even makes sense. This version is just fantastic. Collins, for all of his post-Genesis whining, absolutely nails it. He's a born entertainer who on this tune shows some great interpretive skills.

  • @Aggromerchant I don't get why Phil's so down on himself now. If he calls himself a "caricature" one more time I'm gonna find a way to get to Switzerland to smack him upside that wonderfully bald head of his.

  • I've had my beef with Genesis, but this version is awesome.

  • BEST live version I have ever heard THANK YOU MayaZlatogorka!!!!

  • my fav tune ever

  • Absolutely beautiful song! It brings back amazing memories. Wonderful recording!

  • Heard this for the first time on an Old Grey Whistle Test LP - must have been in the late 70s & have always love it.

  • he always is awesome no matter wht he sings!

  • One of the best performances of one of Genesis' greatest songs.

  • PeterMayer I have listening the 78 tour version, very nostalgic, thank you!, but I still thinking this version is better, for me. Your musical taste is as good as mine.

  • Phil might have lost some of his range, but to me his voice seems more refined here. Nice phrasing. What a beautifful live representation of this song too. Along with Firth, this is my fave Genesis song.

  • I saw these guys in the 80's and they were fabulous....Been to many concerts since and i think theses guys are one of the best live.............~!

  • I think i want to have his baby again

  • Kudos to PC for pulling this one off. A very tough song, with all the highs, especially at 55+. The guy can sing. Beautiful song.

  • Good times!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The definitive live performance of this song :)

  • fantastic...................

  • This is my favorite version of my favorite song of all time..... Phil is a genius as is the band

  • WOOOOOOOOOW....I love this song so dam much!!!!!! Love Phil Collins, he is brilliant

  • I love Genesis, this is the better group afterguard The Beatles

  • never forget seeing them for first time at the 1978 knebworth concert, magical times...

  • Nicht schlecht! :-)... dann kommt man ja ins träumen.. :-)

  • Wow...what memories, my late husband and I listened to this always....so many tears, my husband drowned 8 yrs ago...it's so lonely. how can one be so lonely around people..please pray for me. I have not heard from any of his or our friends ever...you do not get invited to movies or dinners ect when you are only one. S.D

I have my faith but my heart grieves so very

  • I will pray for you. God bless you. Things will get better.

  • Love and light to you... :)

  • Hey, hang in there .... Karma's an awesome thing... good things happen to good people ..... your late husband would be proud .... & want you to move on ....

  • @zimmersteve Hi Steve...that was my husbands name. Yes I have moved on, but that song just brought a swarm of memories. Thank you for your concern!

    blessing and I am Blessed...shelly

  • @bornagainru119 God Bless You.... I'm listening to this song as I am about to enter alcohol rehab in a week....42, down and out, just lost my 3rd job in 2years....... miss my children in Illinois, 8 and 9, as I prepare to go back to my hometown in NJ.... I can't imagine the grieving you're going through..... At least we have this song to help us along the grieving process......

  • @CHHSE1986 Please do not give up. Continue with the rehab, my younger brother decided to take his last drink and blacked out in 07 and killed a man. You are loved , do not forget that. The enemy (satin) will try to cut you down. I will help, contact me anytime.

    God Bless!! Shelly

  • @bornagainru119 that is the power of music...awakes joy and painful memories as well. Hold on, be convinced your husband is in a better place and watches at you every day, so don't feel lonely...i'll pray God to give you peace, and since you say you have your faith... remember, God loves you, and always answers our prayers, according to His times. May His peace be with you, dear bornagainru... be REALLY born again ! ;-))

  • Now this is the Genesis i know and love most!!!

  • WOW - this is GREAT! Thank you for posting!

  • BRAVO !!!!!!!!!!

  • still loving it after such a long time ... universal music ... never forgettable ....

  • This is by far, the best performance of ripples I've heard (& I've listened almost all)

  • Agreed 100%. I saw them in Boston and was very moved by the song. Even my girlfriend/partner who only knew the hits, was very moved by this song and she has no emotional interest in Genesis whatsoever.

  • @BetoAG07 You have got to be kidding? Listen to the 78 tour. It's in the RIGHT key!

  • I agree

  • Comment removed

  • They will ROCK forever!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful song:

    "Marching to the promised land

Where the honey flows and takes you by the hand,

Pulls you down on your knees,

While you're down a pool appears.

The face in the water looks up,

And she shakes her head as if to say

That it's the last time you'll look like today"

  • il massimo!!!!!

  • Beautiful vocal performance!! I must say I had low/moderate expectations of this Genesis reunion. The chops are not quite up to the Genesis of old, but Phil's vocals are top notch:)

  • After so many years...still goozepimpels everytime I hear this song!!!

  • i believe this lower tuning makes this song prettier, but dont misunderstand me, the album version is incredible a very romantic, just lovely

  • I recorded this for a stewardess girlfriend of mine in the 80s, she played it over the PA system in the airport. She took it in the ass.Good girl, musical taste too.

  • @hongkong506: Such romantic eloquence in your dichotomic discourse. What a lucky girl?

  • Thank you my friend. It is true though, she really did.

  • Perfect!

  • pucha que me gusta esta canción...

  • Great stuff. I saw them at the Orpheum in Boston in June 1980; that was the only non-arena show on the whole tour. Anyway, I couldn't get Ripples out of my head for the next two months. By the way, I like the cozy stage set up for the 2007 tour.

  • Was lucky to see Genesis in 1977 at San Diego Sports Arena. Ripples was incredible. The band had some sort of green laser suspended above the stage. Phil acted out the songs with a great performance. Steve Hackett played guitar, and Daryl Stuemer and the band hit all the notes perfectly here. There ripples have come back. Thanks for this concert clip, MayaZlatogorka.

  • I could have seen this reunion tour instead I pissed away $150 bucks at a casino in PA -My loss this looked fantastic!!!!

  • Oh wow... (= "Sail away, away! Ripples never come back... Gone to the other side... sail away, away" <33 I love the refrain <3

  • hey first ablum he sang on people!!!! did pretty good for a drummer sound good too me

  • great ty

  • That's pretty inspiring for thirty years later. Nice job with the solo as well.

    Thanks for uploading (-:

  • What a song.....so beautiful

  • A well-crafted piece of music, nostalgia, and historical performance.

  • Phil's voice is more sweet

  • I agree, but in some songs that doesn't sound good as before... what can you do, can't find the years :D

  • Great preformance, not worse than the album-version.

  • Phil's voice is gone. Nice music, but they did it much better in the 70s and 80s, especially on the vocals. The album version is classic so I'm not sure what MCGenesis1984 means by slamming the "Trick of Tail" album version. Sure miss the good old Genesis days when Steve Hackett was the guitarist. This song brings back those memories. C'mon Phil... grow the bushy beard back and get out the old tamborines. Especially get that microphone back on the stand. You're not Sinatra!

  • That's a bit harsh (-:

It's really pretty good for 2007. The guy's never going to be an inspired hippie again.

I'm with you on the album version: absolutely unbeatable.
