The grapple and berthing method is appropriate for cargo missions but not human capsules. A craft has to undock from the ISS in an emergency if the station is not powered, plus a human has to be inside to operate the arm. So berthing is not appropriate for manned craft, but the berthing method allows for large racks that cannot fit though a docking port, hence why HTV uses the CBM.
Around 15 years ago, when Japan devised this type of docking method and suggested it, NASA did not agree.
However, I think that this method can dock more safely.
