The Lions did not know how to use him properly. They were horrible in the front office and on the sidelines. The Lions culminated their futility last season.

He also collected 1500 yards rushing in the playoffs to hold the postseason rushing record as well. 18500 rushing, 3000 receiving, 1500 playoff rushing. @maroinmybones If I want a running back who would play consistent, through pain and injury, and who wins championships -- Emmitt Smith. 1993 Dallas went 0-2 without him and lost one game that year with him. That is what you call an impact player. As said by another, Barry could've played for a winner, but he was happy with obscurity in the Lions (by resigning). That is not a good competitors attitude.

I was disappointed to hear that Emmitt was such an egocentric jerk with teammates.
After beating the Bills in the 1992 Super Bowl, a lesser-known teammate Clayton Holmes asked Smith to autograph a football. Smith viciously blew Holmes off right in front of the guy's mother. I'll always be a diehard Cowboys fan, and appreciate Smith's greatness on the field, but can't swallow his hawking his TD balls for chump change while making millions or bringing a bodyguard to Irvin's HOF induction.

So let me get this right. Barry bitches and whines about a contract that he signs. then walks away from it, and I should respect him or his ability for that? Not hardly. Greatest also includes alot more than running ability. The guy dumped his career. you can call him one of the greatest, but in the record books.... Guess we will never know.

i hate the gators and the cowboys, but.... i was at work at tmh last summer. i saw this guy standing by the elevator on the 5th floor. he looked familiar, but i couldn't figure out who he was. it hit me who he looked like, but i didn't figure emmitt would be at my hospital. i looked over again, and shook my head and said no. when the elevator opened, he got in, held the door open and got my attention. when i looked at him, he smiled and said 'yeah i'm emmitt.' kinda cool, i guess.

where did these people get the idea that emmitt just played for the records. maybe he played because he loved the game, he was a tough runningback, played with alot of determination, and was durable.. it is very tough to stay healthy all those years as a running back in the nfl. One of best ever

Barry was great but he couldnt block like Smith or catch.. Barry was a pure runner only.If one was to choose who they would have have as there #1 back it would be Smith every time.

Barry had a 136 less career catches for a mere 91 less total yards and Emmitt played 5 more years. Plus Barry played for the Lions. Barry was superior to Emmitt in receiving and rushing. Emmitt was better at blocking.

the reason i say the"he had talent"is a stupid argument is because football is a team sport and players are always going to benefit from other players and coaches, certain systems etc. and you can't hate on them for the hand they were delt, and you can't say they are the greatest just because they were on a crap team, emmitt has everything the greatest RB ever should have Sbs (3) career rushing and touchdown records(both regular season and playoffs)

Who is hating on Emmitt? Emmitt is one of the best backs ever. He was just not as good as Barry. Football is a team sport and Barry was part of a dysfuntional outfit. Compare Jerry Jones to William Clay Ford. Compare Wayne Fontes to Jimmie Johnson. Compare 8 Superbowl appearances to no appearances. Emmitt did have something to do with the Cowboys success. Put Barry on that same Cowboy team and Dallas is even more successful.

look i would asume that you think Jerry rice is the greatest WR of all time well compare the talent he had to the talent that of say Cris carter or steve largent and i could make the same case for them well if they had montana as a QB or walsh as a coach like thats why i say the argument of "better talent" is silly because if you use that agrument to say barry is better than emmitt and then say players like rice,elway,otto or untis are the greatest well your basically creating a double standard

Jerry Rice is one of the best ever. Don Hutson could make a claim. Put Tim Brown on those 49er teams and he might equal Jerry Rice. No one is better than Jerry, others may have been as good. I am not using the argument that if Barry was on the Cowboys he'd be better than Emmitt. He already was better. I am saying if he was on the Cowboys during that time he would have had multiple 2000 yard seasons. He would have helped the Cowboys to more than 3 Super Bowl wins.

Barry's first year with a fullback under Bobby Ross, he reached 2000 yards. Barry already had more yards rushing than Emmitt playing for the freaking Lions in 10 years of changing qb's & offense. 8 years of Wayne Fontes. A couple years of the chuck-n-duck with Mouse Davis. Imagine the stability, I mean electricity he would have shown running behind Moose Johnston, Tuinei, Williams, Allen. Stepnoski, & Newton. He would have made Emmitt's numbers pale in comparison and Emmitt was great.

If Barry was about records he would not have declined to go into the 4th quarter of the last game of his rookie season to secure the rushing title. He allowed Okoye to have it. Barry don't care about records. He wanted to win. He was a team player. If he wanted the career rushing title he would have had it with the lowly Lions and continued on. If he would have been on Dallas those 10 years, imagine the stats. Wow... Emmitt never ran for 2000 with the Boys. Barry did with the Lions.

Love Emmitt! He was great, played hurt, ran hard, and was tough as hell. He just wasn't as talented as Barry. Emmitt probably collected all of his touchdown footballs. Barry probably doesn't own a one. Barry doesn't care about that stuff.

barry a team player? ya sure keep saying that... thats why he walked out in training camp because he's such a team player and look i don't hate barry he was amazing at juking and breaking long runs, but he was unreliable in 4th quarter, 3rd down and goal line situations plus he killed alot of drives and because of that along with the fact he failed in the playoffs i have a hard time saying he's better than emmitt payton or brown

The Lions quit on Barry. He gave them 10 hard years and the Lions in return gave him futility. He never demanded a trade, he kept his mouth shut and did his job. He was brilliant on 3rd down sitiuations by providing 1st down runs and catches. He was great by the goal line. He has 99 rushing touchdowns with the Lions offensive line. The Lions did not know how to use him properly. They were horrible in the front office and on the sidelines. The Lions culminated their futility last season.

He never demanded a trade. He never quit. He did retire right before camp. Tough decision to make when you're still in your prime. The Lions took him out sometimes in goal line stituations because they were ignorant. That is how bad that outfit is run. Rod Marinelli who was 0-16 last year would have done better with Barry than Wayne Fontes. When Bobby Ross came during Barry's last 2 seasons he wasn't pulling him out on third and short & Barry rushed for 2000. Yes it was the Lions fault.

Well Put Cowboysfan, I can only add that Scott Mitchell put up better numbers and stats then Troy Aikman. That really discrdits their excuse of the Cowboys had a better offensive line, not to mention the Cowboys always had a tougher schedule then the Lions.
