i think you old people talking about us in our 20-30 age "teenies"..you have stopped listening to any music of today..just accept he's still gonna be around for many years to come
it kills me how evreybody can set on you computer and say that john mayer sucks because he doesnt he plays with Eric Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy. and if you messege me back somthing stupid i wont reply so dont bother
I don't think he sucks, he's just not legit as a bluesman. You need to draw on something for all that to come through. Something more than his Porshe broke down on the Merritt Pkwy.
Blues is about feeling and transmiting it to people. And as he says, its all about quoting but I would add the phrase by saying its all about quoting in your own way" knowing when to use some licks and when not to.
Sorry disagree, I've worked with real blues men. He's OK, but I gurantee he never worked a dirt floor bar or some tank town somewhere. The Blues is a life lived. He didn't . He's a white kid from Ct. Not exactly Blues Country. He's got alot of dues to pay.
well I repeat, its not just about being or not being a real bluesman, if he can play that guitar like a real bluesman then his attempt is really close and pretty organic. lets face it, he is a god damn smoking guitar player and he knows what he does. Not to mention he has been invited by the great ones such as bb king , Clapton and even jeff beck.
so what eric clapton is from surrey not exactly blues country either. he didn't really live the blues. and you can't say he's not a great blues guitarist
Eric payed alot of dues. If you look over his life. Yes alot if self inflicted. His son etc. He is a great Blues Guitarist. He came up when most people didn't know what it was in the early 60's. Mayer has talent, but he's just not there yet. I doubt if he knows his keys. He's got alot of growing up to do yet. It my book.
There's plenty of people who know I am. My family, wife, friends. The important people. Music is not about fame. Certainly Fame is not about music. You can see that or hear that every day on the radio. ecch! Unfortunatley, No one will remember Mr. Mayer. Eventually he'll get it. When he stops chasing assholes like Jennifer Aniston.
@zinnington u are right that was kinda harsh. i just feel that the way you were brought up shouldnt show your style of play. if i did... id be listening to rap... now i respect those blues men. but those times are going away. but theres still songs to write about
Mayer is to busy trying to be a celebrity than be a good musician. The critics lately bare me out. There are so many better talented blues and jazz players out there to take him seriously. He needs to study his instrument more and prepare or he'll be just another has been soon. He's not really serious enough yet.
@1Guug . Look your' probably young and inexpereinced. The greatest guitarist of our time? Compared to who? Andres Segovia, Chris Parkening? Joe Pass, Mclaughlin, Coryell, Wes Montgomrey Steve Vai. C'mon man, your're not being real. He's no where near those people. The little goof actually turned down going to Berkeley where he could have learned something. Bonamassa? He's a joke. To busy selling coffe mugs and t shirts from his website. The sunglasses etc. Please!
your right greatest of our time is set to high, but I would say he is ONE of the greatest for the last 10 years.
It's unfair that my generation just don't have greats like Hendrix or Stevie Ray so we need musicians like John Mayer to push the blues back into the spotlight.
Iam tired of that damn techno house pop shit I hear on the radio i just can't stand it anymore!
@1Guug You sitll have the greats. There at your disposal. You can buy or download thier music anytime. From Wes Montgomrey to Jimi. It's there for you to learn from and ispire you. Creativity knows no time slots. You need to open your horizons. Check out jazz players. If you are a player which I think you are, you are going to get to a point where the 1,4,5 stuff isn't going to cut it anymore. You need to study
Since music is all about personal "taste", condemning someone else for their taste is rather immature. Certain artists I like and others I don't. I may disagree with your choices but I won't belittle you for them...unless you're a liberal democrat weenie. LOL.
True James, but you also have to honor the music appropriately, as well as the artists. That said, to even put JM even in the same sentence as Albert King and SRV is just wrong. His talent is juvenile comparatively. And yes, SRV played alot of King songs, but played them with total originality, and always credited King, even as he surpassed him.
God what is it with you people? Every artist playing blues or rock or any music genre that has been around for more than 5 minutes is bound to take bits of other people's styles and form them into their own. And any of these musician's will be more than happy to credit these people for their influence. So it may not be completely original but at the same time, there are parts of their styles that will be unique to them. It's about enjoying the music, not arguing about who did it first.
wow, those calling JM a SRV rip off are way off! have you ever heard of Albert King? SRV is an Albert King rip off! n00bs!! JM has tastier licks IMO and a better writing styles. those doubtful should check out "Neon" and "St. Patrick's Day". open your eyes.
eh, i don't prefer this song but it's well-played. =/ his other songs are much better and having this song overplayed on the radio doesn't help any better.
Really? Some other "words" he's written: "Belief is a beautiful armor but makes for the heaviest sword Like punchin' underwater, you never can hit who you're tryin' for Some need the exhibition some have to know they tried It's the chemical weapon for the war that's wagin' on inside." If you're looking for examples of exemplary songwriting circa YBIAW, check out Why Georgia or 3x5 before you attempt to judge someone you more than likely don't have half the talent of. Really.
err.. "ripping" SRV licks? are you kidding? i suppose SRV "ripped" Albert King licks? that's just the blues. there's only so much you can do with a minor pentatonic.
The late George Carlin once said, "In blues, it's not enough to know which notes to play; but why they need to be played."
That's the difference between a bluesman and someone who thinks merely rattling off one measure of boring pentatonic runs after another is akin to "playing the blues."
you said Mayer "ripped" SRV licks. EVERY great modern bluesman "rips" licks. SRV did it, Hendrix did it, and Mayer is doing it now. it's called a quote, and it has nothing to do with Carlin's quote.
Geez...is this all there is?? John Mayer...he`s either loved or hated,no middle ground. I think he`s a lot more talented than most people know. The boys` got the blues down.
i agree, hahahaha i had this wicked dream aaaages ago, if was this bar, small crowd, i was sitting with a random female and some old bearded guy introduced John Mayer, i was admiring the surroundings so i didn't catch Mayer maybe in a few years time, but his hair was a bit more wild haha. Good dream!
Cordprogression of curtis mayfield's People get ready ,solo SRV Lenny..not really special..but who cares anyway, aslong he's not covering any Jessica Simpson;am I funny ,or what?;-)
Jesseblues, you are funny, but i think that John Mayer has found a formula that is paying his bills! Ever hear the phrase "money talks, bullshit walks"? He does have talent! PuffDaddy Built an empire from sampling other peoples music! The people bought it! Does that make him right? No, it makes him rich! And he does'nt care what you think!

Mayer is one of the greatest guitarists of our time.
Of course there are other greats like Joe Bonamassa or Derek Truk.
But at this point of playing you can't say someone is better, it's just diffrent and you prefere what you like the most.
The fact that Mayer Played with Eric Clapton and BB King should show you that he is one of the best.
Like Hendrix said: ,,Blues is easy to play but hard to feel´´ and John feels the blues!

someone should tell mayer vibrato doesn't =soul.
dmarin1 4 years ago
You obviously don't know Mayer's music good enough.
Listen to the words he's written and the compositions he's made.
If that's not soul in your opinion, you might want to think again.
Odiosus90 4 years ago 12
The words he's written:
"Something 'bout the way your hair falls in your face
I love the shape you take when crawling towards the pillowcase"
Yeah. Big FAIL. Mayer, to be honest, is a good guitar player. He has yet to convince me he's a worthwhile artist.
For the record, dmarin is right, vibrato doesn't equal soul. Neither does ripping SRV licks and watering them down with boutique amp tones.

Yes and that is dime-store, middle-school-angst prose.
I used to like John Mayer, but gradually I realized what a gigantic, festering bowl of douche he is.
If I'm looking for exemplary songwriting, I will pull out my Bob Dylan records.
If I'm looking for douche, then I will be sure to consider John Mayer.

Bob Dylan might have been able to write good lyrics.. but that's all he ever should have done. His voice, and music are terrible.

"His voice, and music are terrible."
What constitutes a good voice? One you like?
I would so rather listen to 24 hours straight of Dylans singing than 5 seconds of John Mayers.
After a brief perusal of your channel, it's evident that you are a musical lightweight.
Someone who thinks Nickelback is a good band should definitely stay out of discussions on taste.
