Although I do not wish to start a fight in the comments here, I do feel it needs saying that Americans did not "begin to practice Zen in the 1960s"; this was simply when Caucasian Americans became interested in what Asian Americans had been doing here for years. To say otherwise, I think, would be a slight to them, as they are Americans too.
Thanks for the info Tilaga... so Shaolin is actually from India. This is what India is all about... we create but we dont teach. Now China is mastering it but whatever it is, the genes of the founder of Shaolin is still in the South.
Bodhidharma is from 3rd son of great pallava king skandavarma I from kanchipuram. tamilnadu. Pallava kings holds a title of varma because they were excellence in varmakalai.. which was then followed by pandya kings of tamilnadu. varmakalai means varma-brave,kalai-art. kalaraipayatu means kalari-battle, payattu-to teach. varmakalai is difficult than kalaripayatu. even 5 year kid can do kalaripayatu. but varmakalai you have to learn 10-12 years.
@miamiviceph1, there's no Bodhidharma. there's no Dalai Lama. It's just all figment of your illusion. so just wake up and you'll perceive the Truth. ;-) Be Happy, my brother.
@italmia They do smile, fart and joke, believe me ! Hahahaha ! I practice zazen since 2007 and I've met monks and nuns, and a zen master, I've never seen so smiling persons !
I don't think i would survive in a monestary because i when i meditate i can ignore anything and i have a feeling i would perpousfly ignore getting hit with a stick
I liked the question about the dog. Practising a few years of karate and zazen, being only a begginner..id like to share my thoughts about such question.
I think a dog has reached enlightment because he never looks for it. The dog does not believe in enlightment's existance, for him it only exists what it is. He doesnt think of himself as a dog, hes just what it is...
I tried to understand MU as that: its that thing, that is nothing, just itself.
@Langer450 I would deni meditating for the awnser because i can just except that it is there it isn't neccessary to understand it as long as i know that it is there

We have 7-day sesshins here in New Zealand. I just finished my eighth and plan to do lots more of them. Our teachers have transmission in both Rinzai and Soto, so we do an interesting mix of stuff, sitting, working, eating. Bit sore, but it's becoming less of a problem with time. I really loved chopping wood with the old silverbacks this time, swung that axe pretty well after a few sits.
Zen is Japan is called "funeral religion". Zen temples make good money doing funerals. Make no mistake about it, Zen abbots in Japan don't pursue enlightenment. It's a busines.
You guys are studying a religion that has gone through not only two linguistic translations but two cultural translations. Buddhism is an Indian religion. If your fascinated with these ideas learn from a man with curly hair and dark skin.
"You guys are studying a religion that has gone through not only two linguistic translations but two cultural translations. Buddhism is an Indian religion. If your fascinated with these ideas learn from a man with curly hair and dark skin."
This is an argrumentum ad hominem, or argument to man. edudrepus has failed to state what is wrong about practicing a religion that "has gone through not only two linguistic translations but two cultural translations."
You need to look up your definitions again. I not only stated something that was true I stated something that was congruent with modern convention. If you are fascinated with these principals why not read it from the source. What did you not understand about that? Everyone is fascinated with Buddhism until they find out that it is Indian, why?
What are you talking about? People research the Gitas, the Vedas just as readily as they research Buddhism, no one is saying that Buddhism is not Indian, anyone who knows a thing about spirituality understands that Buddhism is Indian, and everyone who knows what they are doing researches Indian Mysticism very healthily
Most westerns don't portray "Buddhism" as Indian. Dark skinned men with curly hair made these understandings and I'll be dammed if you Caucasians are going to change that.
You sound bitter. It doesn't matter what race a person is as long as they know their Pali Canon and whatever branch of Buddhism they claim lineage from.
Lineage. If you're mad that other races hold lineage you should go back in time and make sure that the Buddhists aren't so tolerant.
Why don't you be specific and name names? What caucasian western buddhist gurus aren't legit?
If Caucasian's would just follow a religion it would not be a problem. Invariably all Caucasians change and warp any religious knowledge they come in contact with. That is why today most western Caucasians think Yeshua of Nazareth was a Caucasian. All of these religious understandings are readily available in the original Sanskrit. The question is why aren't they reading it in sanscrit
It is very ignorant to single out Caucasains when you even admitted yourself that the religion has gone through changes even before it made it to the West.
Theravada- Mahayana- Vajrayana. Do you even know the history of Buddhism?
Whenever an idea spreads it will inevitably change. This is not something only white people do.
Wait a second! "The religion" has not gone though any changes. Caucasians have changed it as they do with all religious knowledge. This being an "Indian religion" all of the understandings are readily available for reading in Sanskrit. The question is why don't these Caucasians want to read it in the original Sanskrit. The answer is because a dark skinned man with very curly hair would have to teach them. They are not willing to accept a dark skinned man with very curly hair as superior.
"They are not willing to accept a dark skinned man with very curly hair as superior." You insolent fool. :) (have a sense of humor or get more minuses)
