This is great stuff. I love the creativity -- using the tech from the time. Just imagine what these guys could have done, given our current technology. Just awesome fun.
@elizabeth71 wow? thanks for the info! so pamela brustman is the girl still was with them in 1988 album right? we can see her in the videos of whats on your mind and walking away? isnt it?
This is great! Up until a few hours ago i didn't know there was Info Soc material released prior to the Tommy Boy era..i'm finding out they have at least 2 albums on the wide angle label dating back to 1983..and this song? man, it's so different from the major label debut...it's just mind boggling...and i love this track..if you can...i'd love to hear some more of the 'creatures of influence' album...please post.
First TimeI hear this song, I found interesting reading about it in wikipedia that Kurt Harland directed this videos and the budget was ZERO for the filming, they probably used a cheap VHS Camera and a TK80 to to the "Graphics"" lol .... not bad for a zero budget and early 80's technology!
NOTE TO ALL INSOC FANS: I suppose you will find this interesting. The band has just released "Apocryphon: Electro Roots 1982-1985". It is a 2-CD compilation of their early material (The InSoc EP + Creatures of Influence + lots of rare/live tracks), and a 30-page full-color booklet with photographs of the band from those days.
That's cool only $20..i'm just learning that they had material prior to being on Tommy Boy..I knew about the Think Tank (forgot which track..something that later appeared on Hack, tho) and A.K.A. stuff (cruel loving, all you ever told were lies) which hasn't surfaced on anything except vinyl, to my knowledge? Your thoughts?
Wow where did you get this? Awesome! I can't believe how young they look. I just caught their show in S.F. It was a blast. Kurt is such an eccentric guy.
: ) So did I. My husband and I got there super early. We were like 2nd in line. So we right up in front of Jim Cassidy. (bass player)Also got to meet him after. Nice guy! I asked him about a possible tour, he said he didn't know. Wasn't that show a blast? Their website has pics of that show. Did you get to see the "think" car out front of the club? Nice talking to you : )
Wow! This was a great song! Too bad they couldn't have figured out a way to put this into the more top 40 albums. I just watched the video for How Long and it's like watching a different group! I love them either way, but this is a much better song.
I always enjoyed when they'd play old tracks like this at the live shows... you could tell who the radio junkies were cuz they just don't get what they'd never heard before. :)
alright. It was kind of late over here when I posted that last comment so I added that 'T' to the title by mistake.
ha ha not only do you hear their new wave roots in their first two releases you hear their house, hiphop, and club influences. lol I have had such an urge to just do about a 30 minute mix of the several songs from both releases.
That would definately be worth hearing. The weirdest thing about that band is that thier music was also concidered Freestyle, because they were on Tommyboy records with groups like TKA and others.
This wasn't solo. Afaik - this was from their FIRST record, prior to signing with Tommy Boy when they did the first album we all are familiar with - I've been trying to get a copy of it, no luck yet. Only 200 or so printed back'n'the'day. ;/
I'll always have fond memories of the quirky, tongue-in-cheak, cyberpunk/tech, synthy new-romantic sound of Insoc... well, thats the best way I can describe them off the top of my head.
This is great stuff. I love the creativity -- using the tech from the time. Just imagine what these guys could have done, given our current technology. Just awesome fun.

They sound more DEVO than ever. I always could hear thier new wave roots. Tommy Boy made them go Freestyle. Great song

DJNesSimepolys 4 years ago
It's called Through Being Cool and that's what I mean by DEVO sounding.
