When will people realize that F-35 had nothing to do with supremacy. US already has the F-22, the most capable platform around. Instead of focusing on improving F-22, and producing more of them, the taxpayer was sold an inferior platform at huge costs! F-35 was a clever ploy by huge corporations to take as much taxpayer money as possible. Secondly, F-35 is NOTHING like the F-22, and yes, Russian 4++ fighters, such as SU35S are superior to F-35 in every aspect, except front VLO and radar!
The F-35 is meant to replace the f-16, F-18, and the Harrier, not the A-10 or F-15. Because it has the same capabilites if not more than the F-16 it can take on a MIG-29 or SU-27 and win. This is just like when people said that the F-16 was useless because it was not an F-15. The F-35 is a match for MIG-29's and SU-27's not the PAK FA or SU-35.

In addition, powerful twin engines give the Russian jets higher acceleration & climb ability. The F-35 was not designed for the same role. Its radar & munitions suite should out perform the Russian systems at greater distance, possibly ending the fight well in advance of visual range. With that said both the F-22 and F-35 are more costly than they should be

The F-35 was not designed to be an amazing fighter it was designed to be a multi-role combat aircraft similar to the F-16. Notice how F-16's are good against other planes just not the best. The JSF is going to go against ground and air targets not just air. The true air to air fighter is the F-22 which the report never said about. Which probably lost because of being out numbered.

All US jets are not good for close quarters dogfights.They have designed them to be stealthy and able to strike from a long range (to hit iraqi toilets) but they are weak at dogfights, unlike the Mirage eventhough it's old.

For one thing, from an aerodynamic standpoint, I can't even begin to describe how ridiculously shit this thing is in nearly every possible aspect.
The only real stealth aircraft ever developed are the B-2 spirit, YF-23, F-22, and F-117 although it wasn't that great and was shot down.
This thing doesn't come close to ANY of them in stealth, nor does it touch the modern Su variants or the Eurofighter in performance, and it falls right on its ass in terms of efficiency.
The west has been OVERWHELMINGLY ripped off. Any suckers who bought into this scam have drank the kool-aid.

The YF-23 was the real winner but lockheed was in bed with the government so they got the job.

@MrGizmo757 Su-37 has been surpassed by Su-30MKI and Su-35BM in terms of maneuverability. Also Su-35BM has supersonic cruise which is a VERY important feature and allows for a lot better maneuvering then without.
The F-14 was the dogfighting solution. The D version was top notch, so much so that enemy fighters literally thought twice before engaging simply because they knew they were going up against the F-14. Yeh it was a bit more expensive to upkeep than the F-18 but you get what you pay for; an unmatched fleet defense interceptor that CAN go head-to-head against the best the East has to offer. F-14 + F-18 + E-2 Sentry was the winning, cost-effective ticket. F-35 is flamboyant, overrated waste.
But no, instead they got rid of the F-14, brought in more F-18's, and now plan to bring in F-35's, the most ridiculous, publicity-seeking attempt to cram as many aviation innovations into one airframe as possible. It's the ultimate example of excessive military spending to no real avail.
The F-22 was expensive but it proved its worth by being literally UNDEFEATED in mock dogfights against virtually every aircraft they've thrown at it.
The F-35 would wet its pants at the prospect of a dogfight.
But now they got rid of the F-14 in favor of filling the decks with ONLY F-18's, which is stupid because for one thing the F-18 is actually more expesnive than the F-14 even though its upkeep is cheaper, and it doesn't even come CLOSE to the F-14's capability. All the tomcat needed was a few avionics upgrades and maybe a more stealthy construction, something which the F-18 got when they released the super hornet.
The navy's set-up was already excellent; the F-14 was the premier interceptor and arguably the best ever created considering its capabilities and versatility, being able to launch of a carrier, carrying the phoenix, etc. Then the F-18 was the jack of all trades for all the other roles, interdiction, ground assault, etc, and wasn't the best at any of them but was pretty damn cost-effective for them. The E-2 has been the navy's premier AEW for more than 40 years. The navy had an all-star lineup.
The F-35 is a complete and utter waste of money. It's a jack of all trades, master of none, not even mediocre at any; its only purpose was to make "stealth" more "available"...which is complete bullshit because the only real functioning stealth aircraft in service are the F-22 and B-2, both ridiculously expensive, but both are unmatched at what they're designed for, which is why they have limited procurement.

The F35 was nothing more than corporate welfare for Lockheed Martin. I realized from the moment I saw the F35 that it was never going to be a more useful fighter than the F16 and the VTOL system would never work as well as the Harrier. Trying to combine so many elements and stealth, only bumped the prices into the stratosphere and created a plane that was tremendously inferior as a multirole craft.
#1 hasn't actually fought any worthy opponents and
#2 is a good plane not hampered by having to fit the stealth multi-purpose roles the F-35 has.

The ROE's of todays actions demand a positive VID prior to any engagement. In any future conflict, other than a full scale war, it will be the same. The leaders of the world and public opinion don't accept more shot down air liners or kills by friendly fire.
In other words, BVR capabilities are nice, but in nowadays conflicts aircraft have to get in close to adhere the the ROE's. That makes any BVR capability useless.

Then you could down enemy awacs from afar and the enemy fighters would be left blind and ripe for the picking, assuming you can match them in a dogfight.

So Su-35 got the JSF in the radar .... it's a 100% kill because the maneuverability is below 0 (at 9G). Will sukhoi an still avoid 40G missile at 0.9 mach.

@Fatallica1985 first of all L-Band radars have very low resolution, it is impossible to use them to obtain a missile lock from any reasonable distance, BUT it can still detect the F-35. however the F-35 CAN jam the Su-35Ss X-Band radar making it unable to obtain a missile lock in any way. its IRST would also be unable to obtain a lock from beyond the range of the AIM-120D. which means the F-35 would win every single engagement, also the Pak-Fa is not much better than the Su-35S. F-35 would win.

This "exercise" was a computer simulation that involved impossible factors on all sides. The F-35s were outnumbered 3 to 1, were denied BVR and air tanking as well, and were given the roles of air interceptor (a task they would not perform in reality). In the single exercise where REALISTIC factors (including mission role) were given, the F-35 had a 97% mission success rate. Why is it that nobody tells the full story anymore? Bullshit has become the new "truth" these days. Such ignorance.

But......it was not designed as an air superiority fighter. The F-15 was designed for that role and at high altitude it was difficult to beat.

All the conflicts we faced over the last 20 - 25 years were small scale. Even the Iraqi air force during the gulf war was never a factor in the conflict. No enemy has emerged which has a higher level of sophistication at a larger scale.

J10 is equal to Eurofighter Typhoon, J15 is Navalized Su-33. Su-47 Berkut is tech demonstrator, Chinese J-20 is based on the MiG 1.44 which lost to the Sukhoi T-50 for 5th gen fighter.
The F-16 has lost much of its prized maneuverability over the years with increased weight and drag. The F-35 advances sensors and stealth tech with better maneuverability than the F-16. The F-35B is light years ahead of the Harrier.
F-35 performance comparable to Super Hornet with better stealth.

The F-35 is meant to replace the f-16, F-18, and the Harrier, not the A-10 or F-15. Because it has the same capabilites if not more than the F-16 it can take on a MIG-29 or SU-27 and win. This is just like when people said that the F-16 was useless because it was not an F-15. The F-35 is a match for MIG-29's and SU-27's not the PAK FA or SU-35.

In addition, powerful twin engines give the Russian jets higher acceleration & climb ability. The F-35 was not designed for the same role. For one thing, from an aerodynamic standpoint, I can't even begin to describe how ridiculously shit this thing is in nearly every possible aspect.
The only real stealth aircraft ever developed are the B-2 spirit, YF-23, F-22, and F-117 although it wasn't that great and was shot down.
This thing doesn't come close to ANY of them in stealth, nor does it touch the modern Su variants or the Eurofighter in performance, and it falls right on its ass in terms of efficiency.

The F-14 was the dogfighting solution. The D version was top notch, so much so that enemy fighters literally thought twice before engaging simply because they knew they were going up against the F-14. Yeh it was a bit more expensive to upkeep than the F-18 but you get what you pay for; an unmatched fleet defense interceptor that CAN go head-to-head against the best the East has to offer. F-14 + F-18 + E-2 Sentry was the winning, cost-effective ticket. F-35 is flamboyant, overrated waste.

The navy's set-up was already excellent; the F-14 was the premier interceptor and arguably the best ever created considering its capabilities and versatility, being able to launch of a carrier, carrying the phoenix, etc. Then the F-18 was the jack of all trades for all the other roles, interdiction, ground assault, etc, and wasn't the best at any of them but was pretty damn cost-effective for them. The E-2 has been the navy's premier AEW for more than 40 years. The navy had an all-star lineup.

The ROE's of todays actions demand a positive VID prior to any engagement. In any future conflict, other than a full scale war, it will be the same. The leaders of the world and public opinion don't accept more shot down air liners or kills by friendly fire.
In other words, BVR capabilities are nice, but in nowadays conflicts aircraft have to get in close to adhere the the ROE's. That makes any BVR capability useless.

If I were the dod I would've kept the tomcat and improved it by giving it the ability to spot and fonfirm enemies BVR...and actually be able to use the phoenix.
Then you could down enemy awacs from afar and the enemy fighters would be left blind and ripe for the picking, assuming you can match them in a dogfight.

@Fatallica1985 first of all L-Band radars have very low resolution, it is impossible to use them to obtain a missile lock from any reasonable distance, BUT it can still detect the F-35. however the F-35 CAN jam the Su-35Ss X-Band radar making it unable to obtain a missile lock in any way. its IRST would also be unable to obtain a lock from beyond the range of the AIM-120D. which means the F-35 would win every single engagement, also the Pak-Fa is not much better than the Su-35S. F-35 would win.

This "exercise" was a computer simulation that involved impossible factors on all sides. The F-35s were outnumbered 3 to 1, were denied BVR and air tanking as well, and were given the roles of air interceptor (a task they would not perform in reality). In the single exercise where REALISTIC factors (including mission role) were given, the F-35 had a 97% mission success rate. Why is it that nobody tells the full story anymore? lair is right. Canada has a very capable military, excellent pilots and aircraft, US made and trained, and have the ability to ramp up training and production if needed. Not to mention the US and Canada has a great relationship and would help out either Country if needed. Canada may be small compared to the military might of the US, but what they have is very capable. And the J20 isn't even combat ready, we can talk superiority when they actually finish one...

For those of you doubhting the F35 - most of these critics are basing their scorn on test frames and versions of the F35 that will never see combat. The completed variants arew worthy of scrutiny - but they are not completed. The Americans build the best Aircraft in the World. Always have and always will. All the criticism of the experts is spot on and if you fail to understand what it takes in combat then it is your problem. The gun ho attitude is nice in the cinema, but it does not cut it in real combat.
How many planes do the Taliban have ? Or the Somali's ? Or the Iraqi's ? Exactly zero. So what is the mission ? Indeed CAS. What do you need ? A plane which can take a beating, with a lot of ordnance and loiter time. The F-35 has none. So what good is it in CAS ?

So let's look at air to air.
Does the A-10 have the same capabilities as the F-16 or F-15 ? Not at all. A few hard turns and the A-10 is out of energy. Low level it will perform, high level it is worth nothing. But......it was not designed as an air superiority fighter. The F-15 was designed for that role and at high altitude it was difficult to beat.
So now you want to claim the F-35 will out manoeuvre an F-15 ? Good luck, I will visit you in the grave yard.

You are not getting the point. The pro-JSF people claim the JSF can replace all of these aircraft, the A-10 in the CAS role, the F-16 in the multi-role and F-15 in the air to air role.
I am just simply saying that this is complete and utter BS.
The JSF is, because of its design, good in absolutely nothing. All 3 aircraft mentioned before will outperform the JSF in their specific roles. That makes the JSF useless.

@mambo4269 -replace the F-15, the F-22 does that(and is several hundred times better). and the F-35 has a range over 2.5x that of the F-16 and has a payload at least 1.4x larger,not to mention the fact that it can carry 4 internal missiles, and lets definitely not mention the 5th gen technology, 360 IRST, superior radar(capable of jamming the AN/APG-77), and the fact that it is more maneuverable when loaded. the same can be said for the B variant and the C variant compared to their predecessors.

We don't fight cold war scenario's. We fight small conflicts, where most of the time we encounter enemies we cannot even identify. Before you put your wikipedia knowledge online, first study the conflicts over the last 20 - 30 years. Then identify the potential hot spots and then identify what kind of weapons you need. Trust me, we are now even even prior WW2 !!!

The point is not whether or not it is a conventional war, the point is whether or not we will face a scenario like we envisioned with the Sovjet Union. The answer to that question is a simple NO.
All the conflicts we faced over the last 20 - 25 years were small scale. Even the Iraqi air force during the gulf war was never a factor in the conflict. No enemy has emerged which has a higher level of sophistication at a larger scale.
Again, learn your history.

J10 is equal to Eurofighter Typhoon, J15 is Navalized Su-33. Su-47 Berkut is tech demonstrator, Chinese J-20 is based on the MiG 1.44 which lost to the Sukhoi T-50 for 5th gen fighter.
The F-16 has lost much of its prized maneuverability over the years with increased weight and drag. The F-35 advances sensors and stealth tech with better maneuverability than the F-16. The F-35B is light years ahead of the Harrier.
F-35 performance comparable to Super Hornet with better stealth.

Add on the fact that they're most likely going to be even more maneuverable than their previous generation jets which are already more maneuverable than the F35 and F22 makes the JSF not stand a chance.

@ESC8781 Thats only your thoery. Whos knows who has better avionics and besides its a steath fighter so the J20 will probibly not be detected. J20 is F22's only competitor. It will be better than T-50 cuz it will have thrust vectoring and better steath due to material thats same as F22's. J20 is bigger so it can fly further with more weapons and it will be more manuverable than F22 (front wings)so it can out turn it in a dogfight. Even a US F-18 pilot said that the J20 is F22's only competitor.
