I'm talking about the first generation G5... It has a silver/orange/black paint scheme on it that looks like tarnished and rusted metal... I recently got a replacement from Logitech, and it still says 500 reports/sec on the box. I believe the second generation G5 (the one you have) comes with the updated firmware, among other improvements.
LoL i know, I had one of these, and in Logitech site there was (probably is still there) a firmware update. I don't know if the upgrade in the reports/sec is in the list though. ;)

Is your G5 the Grey+Orange version, with only a side button? If so, Yes, thats the old one, with the red light. With the new you can't see any light at all, because infrared are invisible to the human eye.
did u use night mode to see the light?

you're so wrong. the gray/orange one is NOT optical, its also a laser mouse.

Who says that? I know it is Laser. The difference to this one, is the wave length of the laser, which is in the infra red zone of the spectrum.

You can also get the version 1.2 firmware for the original G5 from logitech*dot*com, the mouse will support 1000 reports/sec with it.

In the box its says already 1000 reports/second, so it is probably there already.

I'll give you a quote of a review from IGN:
