it was this piece that got me into choral music at the age of 9. That sound when the chorus come in is still as spine chilling as it ever was. For sheer bombast and hand wringing about death, see Berlioz or Verdi's requiems but this work is so true about the genuine grief we feel, yet there is still the moments of pure beauty that reflect how life goes on. I must find my cd of it somewhere. Nothing comes close to Mozart's late works for sheer perfection of emotional expression.
I played this for my son, Evan Tyler, in utero. Well, it was the only Mozart I had on hand, during his advent and wished to act immediately after Barbara Walter's reported on 20/20 of the Berklee brain development study. Later when he was upset, he'd calm immediately upon hearing the first few pulses of Intruiso. I think my favorite of this gorgeous mass is the offertorium - even for its lyrical content and what it suggests about the accessibility, and not rather the ineffability, of God.
Thanks, OGG, for introducing me to the Requiem. What a wonderful piece of music. Its history seems to add to its power, since it is so closely associated with Mozart's death. I especially love the Lacrymosa. Even if he did write only the first minute or so, what a first minute!
Well, the problem I have with the requiem, is some parts just dont live up to the others. In this case, brevity is a virtue. For instance, Rossini's William tell overture is one of my favorites, because it is fairly brief, and the climax is the final part. I believe the most climactic part of the requiem was lacrymosa, but it disturbs me to think of what kind of ending we missed out on, when mozart died before completing it.
Somewhat of an irony. Beethoven's music is often thought of as an elaboration of his darker side however the 9th was a lively piece, an Ode to Joy. Mozart, known for his music celebrating the good in life finds his greatest piece to be the Mass of Death.
I do agree, although Beethoven is my favorite all round composer, that this is the greatest work in musical history.
thank you OGG. now i am going to have to pull out the cd and listen to the whole thing again and again. one of my all time favorites. Mozart was so far ahead of his time!
According to Wikipedia: The eccentric count Franz von Walsegg commissioned the Requiem from Mozart anonymously through intermediaries acting on his behalf. The count, an amateur chamber musician who routinely commissioned works by composers and passed them off as his own, wanted a Requiem mass he could claim he composed to memorialize the recent passing of his wife.
hm... interesting, I always thought the movie in Amadeus that had the crazy count who envied Mozart was just creative device to show how brilliant Mozart was. I guess Mozart really did have psychotic individuals who followed his shadows.
The requiem is a great piece, probably my favourite piece of Mozart. That means it is one of my favourite pieces of classical music! I love every second of it! Thanks for posting!

Thanks grumpy.
Some might consider this the greatest piece of music ever written. It is certainly one of my favorites.
mortson978 3 years ago
I personally think it IS the greatest body of music ever written, ahead of Haydn's "The Creation" and Beethoven's Ninth
OldGrumpyGuy 3 years ago
On the other hand, I believe music is too abstract to have a definite 'greatest' piece. And as the romans would say, de gustibus non est disputandum.
mortson978 3 years ago
On the other hand, what other work has its depth and profundity?
OldGrumpyGuy 3 years ago
i´m going far...Mozart`s requiem it`s the supreme Masterpiece off all art,so beautifull and simple to normal ears but so profound and sobrenatural

I have always thought that "Lacrymosa" was far ahead of its time.
An impressive piece of genius, that is contradictorally both sad and uplifting at the same time.
But perhaps that's just me.
Another nice video, Grumpy.
Thanks.

Is this the song Mozart wrote for his funeral?.
Noh4All 3 years ago
nop, he was writing for another woman who had died, but he died before he managed to finish it, so they say it was like he wrote it for his own death

He shared with his wife that for certain he was writing this piece for his own funeral.
Though he was commisioned to compose it for the count, he had this ominous feeling too ;P
