Love Weird Al. An artist knows they've "made it" when he's made a parody of their song. Al Tries to be respectfull and gets their approval. I can only remember one artist to get upset and that was Coolio (hope I spelled that correctly) but he did get the ok by someone in his camp. Coolio should have been thankful. It only makes people go listen to the original song. Anyway. This video rocks!! Weird Al is a genius. He doesn't get the proper credit or respect.

Pretty sure Al was born in October. Also, you CAN make money off a cover without permission. The law is you just have to pay the songwriter royalties, unless the law has changed since the early 90s. I believe Al doesn't release songs on his albums without permission out of respect for the original artists.

Parody is covered under the "Fair Use" clause of copyright law. That means Weird Al could have released this parody song, for profit, no matter how much Lady Gaga objected. He chooses not to do so, for every artist he parodies, because he respects them and doesn't want to offend them.

The odd thing about Weird Al's parodies is often they tell a story in itself and often the parody is nothing like the orginal in concept. This one really examined her showmanship. He compared her to the Queen of Self-invention Madonna in the video. IMHO he sent many pointed barbs her way. Just like he did with Smells Like Nirvana about their lyrics. They can be funny but they also have a solid point.

Weird Al wasn't able to contact Coolio directly, so he asked Coolio's record label to ask him for permission. Coolio said "no", but the record label told Al that Coolio had said "yes". Coolio was pissed at first, but they made amends a few years ago. Al now only does parodies by artists that he can make direct contact with, instead of through intermediaries.
