We saw Neil at manchester on Nov 9th,the gig was quite small and intimate and was simply fantastic.Neil played this song, with just the piano...and it was one of the best versions that I have ever heard. What a brilliant mind and a superb performer. Will definitely see him live again if I get the chance.
I think this is a truly terrific song, but I'm not sure I rate his orchestra here ... They don't sound particularly tight, for a professional ensemble, and seem a bit weak. (E.g. 0:45-1:00 is a case in point., and there's some funny dissonance going on at 1:50.) Those strings should be full of punch and bite; the opening bars should hit you in the face, not stagger uncertainly towards you. Love Neil Hannon though.
@AnthonyArundel That said, I wrote a string quartet part with the exact same off-beat Latin rhythm (i.e. I stole it...), and the quartet just couldn't stay together, so I guess it's an especially counter-intuitive rhythm.
Once in a while an artist comes along who writes a song that is both melodically and lyrically brilliant, Neil Hannon does this more than any other modern artist I know of, this man is so so so underated.

@egzit Well about 2 years ago i sent him a comic for 'Come Home Billy Bird'. He wrote back and sent me a drawing he did of Billy. :) It made me incredibly happy.
@egzit Yeah the common fan address. It was the original, the whole letter was in his own pens ink, none of that computer and secretary nonsense. I didn't think to write back though, since i knew i was lucky to even get a reply in the first place, I guess i just didn't want to bother him again. But my brother meet him at a cricket match a couple of months after i received the letter and my bro mentioned that i'd sent him a comic for the song and he remembered it and told my brother to thank me.
this band have never had the love they deserve but thats what happends when your so different that you can't be marketed to any easy market or genre. Fucking amazing band
Is it just me? or is the story of all our lives. Like so many of his songs, i can't imagine how neil manages to perform them so well, (and with that certain panache), without ending up an emotional wreck - as i often do.
This song just breaks my heart. I could drown in Neil Hannon's voice alone, but the way the orchestra builds to such a haunting climax is sublime. Gorgeous.
Rarely has a song caught the imagination such as this. A great emotive song and almost a hidden gem of love songs. Brilliantly sung and accompanied by a powerful backing orchestra
sin duda alguna, Espectacular!!

@AnthonyArundel Completely agree. The sound is very weak on this DVD. It should have been the definitive live DVD but it falls well short.

Many artists write songs that are great to listen to but few write songs that are truly moving as well. Neil Hannon is one of them. Bravo!
