Great movie with great cars. But one car special. This is E34 BMW ///M5 with 3.8 stright 6 cylinder M Power engine. Great car even in our dayz. Don`t forget this is not 540 , 535 or 530 E34. Listen to sound of engine. Sound of stright engine sound. Peugeot 406 with 3.0 liter engine not even close to this beast. Just a movie. Cheers to BMW fans..!!

@Wittmann089 well,BMW has 1720kg,NM-340 to 400 with the hp of 340 ,the pug has 1500kg with NM-285 with 200hp...I would say it comes pretty close,feel free to correct me if im wrong frend :D

what model of BMW car is it in this clip? is it the M5 model? also, that Peugeot (406 sedan?) car does not look fast, so how did it keep up with the superior BMW car in the car chase through the city?? anyway this was a good car chase scene, but maybe not the best of all time :)

It's not an M5. You can tell by the exhaust system. It's a normal 535i.  They put M5 badges on it.

The reason the other car kept up was they were constantly having to weave through traffic. Sure, on a less crowded highway, the BMW would have escaped, but that wouldn't be very dramatic.

Apparently director Frankenheimer was a Mercedes guy and had little use for the cars on camera, including the Audi S8. He used an S-Class Mercedes (I think a 500) as a camera car and had no trouble keeping up with the others.

This chase is powerful because it doesn't any of the gimmicky crap you see today. No dressing up. Just the sound of the engines, the crashing, no dialogue. It's just pure film making like you don't see often. It must have been a logistical nightmare to film and close all these Paris streets. Bravo and rest in peace John Frankenheimer.

But there´s a small mistake, when Reno shoots the wheel of the BMW at 7:05 the wheel that blows is from a standard 5 series but in the rest of the scene the car has the M5 alloys.=)
