Saul was a corrupt man in many ways. Well, troubled, I hate to sound judgmental. Let's say Saul was troubled. I can't imagine growing up as Saul's son. Surely Jonathan didn't hate or judge his paranoid, spiteful father but he recognized that David's character made him a worthy king, young though he was. King Saul probably saw that as the ultimate betrayal by his son, along with the prophet Samuel's knowledge that David would be king and Saul's days as a king were numbered.
