5 stars, this was good, it was pretty easy with a small screwdriver, didn't damage anything. Mine went dead after 3 months and I was hoping I could plug it into SATA but it is USB only as someone else said. Was able to put back together for warranty replacement.

BEWARE! This video is really good, but the fault is WD.

The new one with USB3 is NOT sata nor ide, they made it literally USB. So you can NOT use it internally because there is no conversion board. You can not see it in the video, but it's in the shiny metal thing under the hd at the end of the video. New one with usb3 do not have it. If you have the older usb2 version, go ahead, it will be most probably sata (or ide). USB3 is literally usb3... Sad...

I would say the WD Passport Essential is for you, they have a 250, 320, and 500GB version.

However, you can get A LOT more speed, and much cheaper from a desktop external hard drive, but it will require you to plug the hard drive n separately.

Yeah, as was mentioned, this is not an advisable hack any longer. I also got the integrated USB card, so no dice and now you have a scratched-up case (likely) that you may not return.

Unless you can check the model number somehow and confirm, I would not recommend.

my wd was a bit different when i opened it up. the usb plug and hard disk is one piece (unseperable), so i couldn't switch it with my laptop hard drive :( damn.. it wasn't even a Sata i beliEve.... WD Passport 500GB model no. WD5000MES - 00 (3409A)

that's because you didn't research.

You had to look at the R/N number on the box and see if it's A7B B7B. If so, you can take them apart, if it's B8B, you can't disassemble it. That's probably what you got.

When I opened the case up, several plastic thin pieces fell out. I think they belong to the clasp on the casing. Is that supposed to happen?

no but nothing serious as long as a couple are still attached. As long as it stays on you should be fine. Even if you drop it on a hard surface, the integrity of the case doesn't matter since the Hard drive itself can get internally damaged.

no not really I have 1 external (connected to my media center) and 1 portable on for countless hours, I forget or just laziness but do make sure when you disconnect properly. You go down to the bottom right and click "Safely Remove Hardware" or go to Computer and right click on the hard drive and click "safely remove" or "eject". This can help the longevity of the hard drives. Stick with Western Digital or Seagate. Stay away from Maxtor, their quality has gone down the poopshoot

Never mind. I got it, just took a little more to make it pop out. although some of the enclosures (the thin ones) snapped off.

This is the MyPassport Elite. I had a Dell laptop with a 80GB Hard Drive. Needless to say, I needed a bigger hard drive on my laptop so Staples had a deal for this 250GB MyPassport Elite for $60 SHIPPED. The hard drives are the same size 2.5" SATA. You can swap a 500GB HDD only if that is a 2.5" SATA HD. Other HDs for Desktops, External are 3.5"
