I still fondly recall the dull thud of those red rubber projectiles on hardwood. I had this toy when I was about 4 years old and I remember being bewildered and overwhelmed by the complexity of it! Now I get it - Time Traveler was supposed to slide from that one spot down into the cockpit!!!
Re-discovery is a very cool thing. I clearly remember this toy now thanks to this commercial. 33 years ago I was surprised with a ton of Micronauts stuff for Christmas and spent the entire Christmas break building things with this and the monorail. It was my favorite Christmas as a kid. I couldn't put my finger on just what it was I had until now. Thanks for posting!
Dunno if you ever found a working copy of the Micronauts font. The micronet site seems to have died with Geocities - but is the Sega font close enough for you? It's much rounder than the Battlestar font.
@danlektro : it is the same, isn't it? I haven't laid eyes on the Sega logo since my days at the Sega Center arcade in the early eighties, and so had forgotten. I've just found it under "Sega font". Thanks!
@staticfluxforever I think the "m" is slightly off but the font is otherwise spot-on. I've seen that style of writing used elsewhere before both Sega and the Micronauts, so the typeface both those fonts probably has an actual name I am unaware of. Maybe someone at the Mego Museum would know?
@danlektro That's a good suggestion about the Mego Museum, I'll try that. Yeah, the font was not uncommon throughout the 70's, often but not always in the context of futuristic themes. Right, the M and other letters in the Micronauts logo have a little "extra" at their ends, I assume a marketing strategy suggestive of the Star Wars brand logo which had stamped itself so firmly in the collective consciousness of the time.
@staticfluxforever I think Micronauts actually came out slightly before Star Wars, maybe as early as 1976 if my lousy memory is right. But it's part of the zeitgeist, and having the embellishments definitely make the typeface look more like what Lucas wanted for Star Wars. I think they introduced the Force Commander and Baron Karza as a reaction to Star Wars' Stormtrooper and Sith character design.
@danlektro The original micronauts predated Star Wars by three years, first released in 1976 (1974 in Japan), but yeah, I think you're right about the Baron Karza being their own version of Darth Vader.
Yes. I remember Christmas of 78 when I received this awesome toy from "Santa". I was up until 1am playing with this toy and my parents allowed my sister and myself to enjoy the evening. The toy line was my escape from reality for a while and forged a great memory that I hold onto whenever I see something from Meco. After the move and time, parts were lost or broken from so much use. If we could go back in time and enjoy them again.
No real need. It's just such an iconic fixture of my childhood, and, along with another font type I can think of, epitomized the "space-age" aesthetic that was quite an inspiration to me then. It would be nice to know the name and be able to locate a downloadable version somewhere, that's all. I did try the Willy Jones files suggested by sreafea below, but they do not open with any app I've used and so remain inaccessible *sigh*. And still don't have a name!
I had this as a kid back in 80. I play with it until it literally fell apart. It got scattered all over the basement and I lost it over the years.... I think what was left of it got sold in a yard sale. I wish I'd taken better care of it, but back then, kids PLAYED with their toys, not keep them in the box and hang em on the wall like we do now.
the great part about it was that no matter how many parts you lost, you could still make *something* out of it... the not-so-great part was that they weren't nice enough to include extra projectiles, which were easy to lose once you figured out how to remove the heavy rubber tips so they would shoot ten times as far...
owned! loved!

I had this very toy when I was a kid! Loved it - had many months of enjoyment out of it. The 'wing guns' were brilliant!

ooks like the battlestar galactica font from the old tv series
AudioAndroid 2 years ago
It does, though if I remember right the Galactica font was angular, whereas the Micronauts font is more rounded.
