glad you and your kid werent hurt. good driving. although pay attention to cars behind you when you do decide to make a complete and sudden stop in conditions like that. you never know if someone isnt paying enough attention
@dwarfer777 There was an accident right there and he HAD to stop to avoid being in an accident himself. Just shut the fuck up you retard before you spew any more shit out of your mouth.
the bmw driver has traction control, electronic stability control, dynamic stability control, anti lock brakes, a vacuum brake booster, and he still rear ended that other motorist. I guess everyone that drives BMW's suck at driving, because they need all that driving assists and they still get in accidents.
Kind of a misleading title as there was no accident but on the plus side, you handled the situation rather well and I particularlly like your responses to several stupid comments. Personally, I might have slowed a little when I saw the traffic bunched but I think you were already driving at a reasonable speed. The proof being that you hadled a surprise situation without incedent. Good job overall!
@NedPeppers There *is* an accident... The BMW rear-ended the minivan, which is what shunted it over itno my lane. I didn't say that *I* was involved in the accident. :-)
@1337shellc0der I do. It's a Subaru. However, it doesn't matter how many wheels have power to them when you are trying to stop - all cars have 4 wheel brakes.
@Scruit Agreed, I have an 02 Legacy. Gettting up to speed and turning is much better, but the AWD have no effect on the brakes. Good brakes are good brakes whether they are on a BMW or a Subaru. The person in that BMW Just didn't use them soon enough.
Lol, you have some really dumb drivers around there. The sad thing is, there was plenty of time for the Bmw driver to throw it in reverse and back out of your lane...you handled that well though
kinda like my situation, some lady was backing out of a parking lot (and your instinct is to avoid an accident) so she sped up and came towards me. i throw it into reverse really fast (i was stopped but shitty trans) and my trans went out and she didn't hit me. if i let her hit me she would've had to by me another car. but now i have to buy myself another one. (trans is worth more than the car)
Good job of avaoiding a collision. The BMW guy caused the problem, not you. The tires that come on them are dangerous in snow. If you can afford a BMW put snow tires on it.
or the BMW driver could have simply used more caution while driving in inclement weather.. Swerving into oncoming traffic in an attempt to avoid a collision sure is a an easy way to kill yourself. The BMW driver should have swerved onto the right shoulder or took the impact straight on.
You need to slow down. When traffic is bunched up like that, you can expect someone to take your lane. With those weather conditions, you should have been going much slower. CCTV is nice to prove fault, but your car will never be the same after they hang it back together with imported parts. You need to drive to the lower common denomiator drivers on the road. Notice the SUV behind that row of traffic coming to complete stop so you and the others can collide without involving them. Smart.
I don't agree with a couple things you said. 25 in a 55 limit is plenty slow enough - I slowed to a speed that allowed me the same handling characteristics as going speed limit in dry weather. Also, if someone suddenly crosses the centerline then it doesn't matter how fast you are going, it's all luck from that point on. If he'd crossed the line as I was passing the SUV then I could have been going 5mph and still hit him. 5mph is not a reasonable speed, especially for a 15 mile commute.
I agree with you Scuit. You can just slow down on the road like that. People that drive to cautious are just as much a danger to other as those that don't. Example someone does 25 in a 55 cause it's slippery, someone doesn't see them and whammy. Had that person been doing relatively close to the speed limit...you wouldn't have that problem. I dont know about you, but i also don't ever expect someone coming from the other direction to enter my lane .i really dont agree at all with pac.
@Scruit you weren't going too fast and you had plenty of room to slow down and swerve a little without going in the ditch. You handled this well. I don't think 30 mph is too fast in these conditions.
you are wrong pac. If its 55 and you slow down slower than 25 you are just as much a hazard if not more to other drivers than if you were doing like 45. in conditions like that if someone is being caustious at 45 and comes up behind you doing 10, you have an accident. Overcautious drivers are in my opinion more dangerous and cause more accidents than those that aren't so extreme.
Impossible to agree with you and the law likely also disagree's. Most of the time the incidents you describe are the fault of the impactee for not paying attention and NOTICING the other driving going much slower. I have no depth perception (one eye) and even I can tell when a car in front of me is going slower than everyone else. that's MY cue to smarten up and be careful. If you hit a slow moving car that means you were not paying attention 99% of the time.
Interesting. A combination of lucky circumstances (relatively speaking) and tactful driving from Scruit. This same situation, but at higher speeds, happened to me the day I drove home my new car from the dealership recently. A guy swerved into my lane to avoid hiting a breaking car infront of him. I was driving at 55mph and had half a second to react. He had left me a third of my lane to scoot round him. Very luckily, I did!
Nice job! Great car too, I have a 2007 Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander Hybrid and both have ABS too, it's a life saver. My Explorer has that Roll Stability Control which is supposed to prevent rollovers, has helped me avoid on the interstate though.
The BMW didn't swerve. He hit the guy in front of him and was deflected into the oncoming lane....look a little closer at the front passenger side as it passes in the video. You can even see the other car lurch forward at the time of impact. *lends someone his glasses* try these! :-P
The BMW tried to swerve, and struck the rear of the SUV's rear bumper on the driver's side with the passenger side of his front bumper - that's why the impact pushed him into my lane. If it was a simple rear-end accident then the BMW would have stayed in his lane.
he did swerve and I agree that you did nothing wrong! you did what you could! and yeah I think everyone doesnt think a car is going to pass the center line even though it can happen! If your safe than it helps! you were able to avoid and that is some safety! but even though its a reaction its best to apply brakes lightly and move wheel away, even with abs it still locks and slides in snow! I know! so it takes longer to move! I know how the speed thing is an issue but Id do the same!
A couple folks suggested I was going too fast. I'd like to address that here. This is a 55mph road, and under normal dry conditions my car is capable of stopping from 55mph in approx 135 feet. In the video above I stopped from 25mph in 130 feet. I'd say that's an appropriate speed adjustment for the traction conditions.
I can understand him swerving away from the immediate problem (the SUV) although if he's unable to avoid a collision and wished to swerve then maybe the ditch on his side of the road would be a better option. It might still mess his car up, but swerving towards oncoming traffic could have been MUCH worse.
The video shows that he can't see me when he swerves - but that's a BAD thing not a good thing. I was doing 25mph (55 limit) so if he'd done this when I was level with the SUV then it probably would have been an airbag-popper.
you do realize that one you release the gas and depress the brakes AWD is meaningless right ? ALL CARS have 4 BRAKES. so NO CAR has a distinct advantage over others cars because of 4wd or awd when stopping in fact the AWD is likely to be HEAVIER and at a DISADVANTAGE when stopping.
AWD means GO faster not STOP faster.
Good job keeping it cool and working the problem. for a moment I thought you were going into that side ditch.
@nerys71 thank you for saying this! I am so sick of drivers telling me they don't have to worry about snow because they have AWD. Driving smart and tires are the only things that can help you in this situation
@bloodhoun234 Those cars have line locks in the front brakes that allow the front brakes to be locked while leaving the rear brakes free. They still have 4 brakes for normal driving. Wiki: "burnout" and read the section "practice"
@nerys71 you do realize that traction control systems don't necessarily only use brakes right? The computer of the car reads what each wheel speed sensor is doing and accelerates or decelerates each wheel appropriately.
AWD means the computer has more to work with to keep your steering input in control, rather than only working with 2 wheels.
glad you and your kid werent hurt. good driving. although pay attention to cars behind you when you do decide to make a complete and sudden stop in conditions like that. you never know if someone isnt paying enough attention
